After my first year of waiting I labeled it Vapourware, and when Vantard was announced, I had Darkfail fanatics to measure their community's rabid lunacy to...
But, a couple months ago, after AoC muhtraped me, I was going back to the forums and was thinking of giving things a try...
Then beta leaks [in themselves not bad, except it made the game look like shit], then speed hacks... now the release....
Does anyone else think we are looking at Mourning2? Though i think they MIGHT be buying equipment to get things online once the suckers... I mean pre-orders' payments come through, or will they just keep it?
And why do I get a sense of satisfaction from knowing how many fanbois are burning on the insirde right now...

From what i have read they did a good job for the size of the company. Darkfall cant compete with the big companies.
I think the game machnics are interessting, i also think the game maybe has a few basic design flaws. PvP is to much open. I dont mind FFA with full loot, but maybe the map has some design flaws. As far as i understand it, there is no player choice if he wants to go to dangerous places or if he wants to avoid them. I remeber my time in SoR where i knewed that it is dangerous to go and harvest certain raws. Since it had decay as well it was a must to go there once in a while or i had to craft items with lower stats.
Maybe i am a bit of a carebear. But a game with 24/7 ganking will have a hard time.
Ehm... Darkfall is the best MMO on the market right now, hands down, bar none.
U can live in ur little hater world all u want, but the fact is the game is out for sale, its working fine, it looks good, it plays great, its a lot of fun and pretty much everyone playing loves it.

Dark i think you have been asked this few times at least: do Tasos pay you or what? I opened 5 threads or so and in all of them you defending game, why the hell you dont play it?
And about that: "pretty much everyone playing loves it." lol. Many people dont like game cause of marcroers, botter, speedhackers and other shit....

Ah, Mourning. I was fooled by them and actually bought that game. It was playable though, even if barely and very very empty...
I know they sold the game on and it was started and then closed yet again. The idea I liked about Mourning was perma-death from age, but with the possibility of having heirs that you could give your stuff and some of your skills to. Too bad noone else has picked those ideas up. Did they not manage to get Mourning banned from this very site due to some fraud?
I also managed to buy Irth online, which at least seemed to be working and is still operational even if it was dull and probably extremly empty as of now. Actually I got an invite to come back just this christmas so they must be alive in some way or another.
I did buy and defend Vanguard on launch, still think it is a very good game that could have been a truly great game without the mismanagement of a certain someone starting with a B.
I was tempted to buy DnL or rather the Settlers of Ganareth pre-order, as soon as the reports started to come from those who did I was very happy I did not...
So there you go, even if I'm slow to pick up learnings from my past mistakes I do learn a little each time, so please forgive me if I'm careful and wait a month or two before buying DF...(besides I hate FPS games and both haters and fans seem to be somewhat in agreement that DF is a lot like an FPS game).
Fixed it for you.
To say its the best MMO on the market is pure BS. A very limited amount of people can play it, and others are still waiting for a chance to actually be able to purchase the game.
Now throw an "In my opinion" on the front of your statement and its no longer BS. Because no matter what, a game is only 'the best' in the opinion of the person who likes it.
As to the topic:
Yeah, the company might be trying and yeah we know they are a small team and indy etc, but to go from boasting how "The World can support 10k players online at one time" and still havent really shown that it could is a bad sign.
To say that they have all these partners for publishing, distro and billing and as of release have been self publishing, self distributing and self billing for account purchases only shows that they have either lied about said partnerships or have been less than truthful about the situation. Either way its another bad sign.
The fact they have so many people tearing their hair out trying to purchase the game is a good sign, showing the game does have a bit of interest among the genres playerbase. The fact that they cant figure out how to work their account system is a bad sign.
An even worse sign is that for people who supposedly are having fun and loving the game, a majority of their fans spend a lot of time on the various forums fighting of negative comments, debunking possible rumors or posting anti-troll troll posts rather than playing the game. Those who love something take no care in what others have to say. Those who are possibly in regret will find reasons to justify their buyers remorse and possibly try to sway others into going with them, sort of like the old saying 'Misery loves company'.
There are 3 types of people in the world.

2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
Ehm... Darkfall is the best MMO on the market right now, hands down, bar none. So you are some kind of authority or what?

Learn to discuss and stop making sweeping empty statements. <Mod Edit>
But how could you try AoC? (Wich you knew was crap from seeing videos and beta reviews.) And then be suspicious towards DF?? Listen to the people playing DF, instead of the trolls. You will get a much better picture of the game that way.
Fixed it for you.

Bingo.
This is what caught me right on. Too many promises, none delivered in acceptable form. I am promised the moon and I am given a paper scrap with a moon drawing. Take it boy, its an indie moon.

The same could be said for Darkfall. The vids looked bad (gameplay wise, not even talking about graphics) and the beta reviews were all glowing (same as AoC was while the negative reviews were dissed by all the fanbois, such as the negative reviews for AoC were).
And the AoC forums on every site had the same fanboi "OMG this game ROCKS!" reviews and comments while anyone who posted anything negative about the game were labeled "Trolls" and "Haters" and told to "Go Back To WoW" because they were "Carebears", such as the Darkfall forums on most sites.
Also Darkfall's official forums are constantly being sterilized to prevent any dissention that could paint the game in a bad light, such as AoC's official forums were.
So again, he would be walking into the same trap. That is if he could actually purchase the game.

The only thing I've seen about Darkfall that I like is how there's no targeting (AoC really screwed themselves when they added targeting). That is absolutely the only thing I've seen that would give me any inkling to want to play. The graphics, sound, gameplay (other than the combat), community, customer service, etc are all horrible.
I swear the Fanbois are in some kind of cult or something. They'd wipe Tasos' behind if he told them to.
From my limited experience in-gamelast night, the game is FUN, but lacks severe amounts of polish. If you're coming from WoW or EVE, the lack of overall finesse will hit you hard (my previous subs).
The game is amazingly fun, however. Theres no denying, the game has this hook (like Everquest provided all those years ago) and If I didn't have any other rl responsibilities today, I would have gladly stayed up all last night playing, which I haven't considered doing in any MMO for years.
I honestly can't wait to venture further out into the wilds once the servers go back online later today.

Ok lets analyse wath we see in two PvP videos. First AoC:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUSiRA7U3rs
This looks like WoW on steroids. Dont sure why they/he fight? Just die and respawn. Could be fun.
Darkfall PvP video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORSC3HWilPg (it takes a few minutes before the enemy reaches the cave)
A completely different gameplay. They fight to protect thier city. And its noob gameplay ("low lvl"), i just want to be a part of this battle.
Thats what i think.
Which makes me wonder. Exactly where do the fanbots for this game come from ? What was the last game they played ? Some MUD from the 1980's ? Seems like they've been hiding in a sweaty closet for 20 odd years ?
This is what it think DF main problem is (well aside from incomptent developers). The game is simply not polished to the level anyone with a sane mind (or ironically youthfully fickle) to buy it for forty odd Euros. Indie developers or not the animation is simply before 2000. This is not to save resources... far from it. Its because the developers are bloody awful and despite the long development the release seems .. well.. rushed. I would so love to know what really goes on in the past eight(?) years at AV.
There are so many cool indie games out there (Mount and Blade, half life 2 mods, Eve (?) ) that I really wouldn't want to use AV as a great indie developer.
Both video look stupid. Runny around Benny Hill Show style combat. Only VG has crap animations. The only difference is the context. E.g. Protecting city in DF... and I can tell you with that combat so many people are going to get bored very quickly. Two attacks eh ? Observing your enemies upcoming attack is a little pointless isn't it ?
Once again.. *cough* *cough*.. the standard for SIMPLE yet hard to master "realtime" combat was set in M&B. Tasos knows this which is why he dared cite its name whilst on the DF hype wagon last year. Bad.. Bad naughty Tasos.
"Observing your enemies upcoming attack is a little pointless isn't it ? "
Im not following you here? Thats what you alwayd do, thats how you dodge, block or parry an attack! I have been doing fencing and Martial Arts for over 20 years, so i have no clue what you mean??
In M&B you can feign an attack direction and quickly do a faster hit using another of the 4 or so directions. Your opponent can anticipate to block the first and doing so get mashed by the second. Alternatively they can anticpate a feign and choose to block the second. Sometimes if you have a enough reaction time and a fast weapon you can block both the first and second. Large weapons like two handed swords block one attack well but speed of setting from one block to another is slow.
Alternatively for shields the size of the sheild and the position of the landed hit is key. If the shield is that big your opponent may need to seriously feign and attack from opposite directions. Though large shields also encumber the person using them as well. There is also shields for mounted combat which cover more leg area for obvious reasons.
Basically there is a lot of variation in speed, weapon type, blocking area and attack sequences.
There is not actually that many hitboxes in M&B. Head, L Arm, R Arm, Head, and Legs. Being hit from behind on hard is almost certainly fatal or will knock you over Given that DF needs a ping of 150 ms and less and MO is proposing using multiple hit boxes... I find the DF combat still to be a joke. It a whack on and off fest which is also whhaay to fast. With little speed differentation in armour class, size of weapons.
Go play mount and blade (Hard settings please!) and you will see why DF combat is painful to watch when people think its got some kind of strategy in it. You also undrestand why AI in these games sucks. Everyone in M&B is waiting for online play.
BTW... tha chainsaw sword is amazingly stupid. It would simply be worse to swing due ot increase suriface area of the razor edges. It would also stick in shields and bodies too easily. If you think this is pedantic its not... for a game based on PVP melee combat its dammned badly thought about. But this is AV were talking about.
I have played M&B for many years, did get a free copy when they released it : )
And i think M&B have the best combat system ever. In DF beta i posted alot about letting us press and hold LMB when attacking (just as in M&B), and we have to wait and see if that will come in later. Archery and magic works that way.
Still i think DF combat is way better then AoC and WoW. Its not perfevt, but one of the better ones in a MMO right now. Not even realtime is common nowdays.
Given the state of combat in DF I have to say it would have been better off going for going the WoW route. Simply because of the variety in attacks. People on here might be fed up with "WoW combat" based games but I can tell you that the strategic FPS world is not sympathetic to button mashing.
Why did they NOT spend time simply developing combat ? Sod ships and town building. Build a decent combat system and this was the base to build from. But instead even things like weight and encumberance have been left out. This combat system doesn't need tweaking it needs re writing. History shows major changes in "released" MMO do not go down well.
I am also seriously insulted by Lord Tasos climing its "like" M&B when al the key features are missing. As you say even simple hold mouse button down is not present.
If you think thats unfair then I think it has to be remember that it highly probable a significant number of people that have already left most likely have had experience in M&B.
That's a reason for me to try this game.
But that will be at the end of this year, when the game is close to what it should be (hopefully)
Buty WoW combat has auto targeting! Think Call of Duty with that! Wouldent be the same thing. And CoD also only have a few attacks, shooting with weapon, throwing grenade or knife attack....all with LMB.
You dont have any "special attacks", and still you can play and fight for years. Same with darkfall.
Dark you'd play a turd as long as it wasn't WoW and call it the best game on the market.
i actually though the combat in aoc was alright,it was just too buttonsmashy. It feels so unconnected.the actual idea and mechanics behind it are really good, but they designed it too messy and spammy.
Id say Spellborn has the best combat system right now, just a shame noone plays it
I think alot of peopel are in the same boat. They are looking for a certain game that they just cannot find. And when a release comes out that they have fun in they get all excited, but it almost allways wears off. Personally I know I will probuably play at first and boast about how fun and awsome the game is, but then in a week or so I will have lost most of my enthusiasm for the game. I still cannot wait to try out darkfall though.
My opinion matters to everyone...
I just have one question...
I have seen many Screenshots now and really... the graphics look like shit... I mean I know that it won't have Farcry Graphic, but at the moment, for a game of 2009 the graphics really suck... Sure the graphics aren't so important like other things, but IMO they look like crap.
And so, are the graphics really as bad or is it just me who thinks so?
