I just tried eve this weekend for the first time.
Giving new meaning to the word massive. I am impressed and hooked. This is the game I have been looking for since I satrted gaming. My only regret is I found it so late. There are a few things I would change, but over all, man I love it.
Litte tough to get started as a newbie, but a combination of tutorials (do em both) and the help channels, you will be fine.
I am a miner, I like mining, I can start dinner, mine, refine, run back out, eat, I like it. Perfect amnount of down time for me. But I may be a bit weird, I don't like games I have to give 100% of my attention to 100% of the time.
Any way , just had to say something, what a dam cool game.
If you want a new idea, go read an old book.

I'd suggest joining a corp at some point, doesn't have to be huge one - but at least have some seasoned members. A corp takes the rookie chat channel that extra step further. You will get "personalized" service.
And to my surprise they have let me take my time and not pushed me toward a certain area of play, ie. mining, rat-killing, pvp, etc.
PROS:
CONS:
Needless to say, I'm glad I joined a corp.
So as not to appear biased, I won't include my corp name here.
