I am wanting to find a home for myself and wife. She will settle where where ever I do, I love crafting. I have had a played both and both I enjoy, But I find myself more and more into a social grouping. I love to group and do things as a community. I enjoy helping out people and guilds. So which game would fit that. Which has a large community that would welcome in a new starting player? Because I would start over from lvl 1 and work my way up. I am disabled so I play alot between 30-40 hours aweek.

I have played almost every MMO out there and after reading what your interests are i'd have to say neither is best. I'd recommend trying Ryzom, it's a little dated but if you don't mind semi good graphics i think it'd be worth giving it a shot.

The crafting system is the best ever made, 99% of armor and weapons are player crafted and the community is the best i've ever seen in any MMO. Everyone's very helpful regardless if your in thier guild or not.

The game is free to download off of thier site as well as free to play for the time being, think it switches back to pay to play at the end of this month. A new company took it over and are setting up a new pay to play service as far as i know.

Just thought i'd give you my 2 cents and something to consider, definatly worth looking into.

I'd go for EQ2. It have really good dungeons and the group play there is better than anything I seen. The solo play ain't so good however but as long as you aim on groups you will have a good time.

Well I played both games and liked EQ2 better (more fleshed out), although Vanguard's crafting may be considered more well made. I would still however suggest EQ2 - you have good crafting, harvesting, housing, standard leveling, Alternative advancement, different deities, guild leveling and guild halls. I played EQ2 for a long time and think it is a better choice, plus it is more stable, with  more players. Plus, once you have a Sony Station account you can have both games at the same time for a little more $$ per month.

EQ2 also has a strongest character customisation system - you have three different, complex "talent trees" for each class (called AA by players for alternative advancement), about a dozen of different deities each giving acces to deiferent skills, racial talents and skills (much more important than say in WoW) and skill masteries every ten levels.

As for servers, if you are into PVP try Nagafen, if you rather prefer RP and socialisation I think the safest bets are Antonia Bayle and Lucan D'lere (though very little pvp there;). Those are the biggest servers I think.

Right now I have moved on, because I like PVP and tried WAR and AOC. But if I had to chose a game for myself and my wife for a very long time to come, based on your categories, I would definitely chose EQ2 over all other mmos. Did I mention a strong RP community?

Solo play in eq2 is awesome IMHO. You just have so much things to do there... Some classes are of course weak in soloing, why others are the masters of solo...you just need to decide what you want. E.g. one of the best solo classes, shadowknight is also one of the least classes needed in raids, but he can kill  solo mobs which require a whole group with a healer... so make a wise decision.

Mostly Endgame now, but yes its still active, higher populated servers will help you lvl up. New expansion just came out aswell so more people are going to be playing.

EQ2 is probably your best bet. You can solo a lot if you buy all the expansions and the community is extremely friendly - they really hit the nail on the head with their 'mentor down' system that encourages people to powerlvl nubs.

go to Vanguard if you want more freedom, EQ2 is a great game as far as content but I find it extremely boring.  there is somthing about EQ2 that just makes it feel very dull, doesn't grab me at all.  between these two i'd say Vanguard just because there are probably a lot more newer players trying to level up

Well, I picked up a time card today and reinstalled it, now its updating. Gots another 11hours. but I havent bought the SO expan. I will get that in a month or so. And will I be missing anything not having it as far as crafting etc at low lvls? I know it give a few new Gods etc but I am not to worried about that a low lvls.

Nope it affects levels 50-80. Check out these threads on the EQ2 forums: TSO Manual or TSO Stinks for more information
