If you waste like 10 hours of your life each day all month long then you have issues and need to get out and see the world instead of putting it to such a waste infront of a monitor all day.
The world is full of terrorists, you are far safer in front of your computer screen.
I read recently that Aion have imposed some limit on playtime to a maximum of 300 hours in a month. (This works out approx. at 10 hours/day.) What are your thoughts on this being say applied to other mmos? Would it stop you playing it or do you think it could be a useful addition to curb excessive playing? I personally think that number could very easily be brought down to 250 and still allow 99% of people to play as much as they liked.
Korea has laws restricting how much time you can play on-line, Aion isnt imposing anything they are just abiading by the law like every game in korean like WoW
No game in the westen world will do it because its not law simple as that
Ok, are people seriously in anger over this? I mean 300 hrs a month ... 10 hrs a day.. If you get pissed over this you need to get out from time to time. Even when I was highly addicted to raiding in WoW I spent 35hrs a week in game... thats 7 hrs for 5 days. I think THAT is really too much for a person who also works 50 hrs a week.
I see NO problem with an online gaming company imposing restrictions like 300 max hrs a month. At that point your doing more harm than good with your life.
this is for koreans only as they already have the same payment system for other mmos so its nothing new just stupid dumb people that just now heard about it old news
The 300 hours per month thing won't bother me one bit. I never play that much anyways. Usually when I'm working I barely get 1-2 hours a day during the weekdays so I'd be way under the limit anyways.
I'm fairly certain that if they imposed this limit on people without their knowledge 80% of them wouldn't even get to the point where the account locks out and tells them they've played for too much. The only way they'd find out abou the limit is if the 20% of people who only play games and nothing else come to boards like this and whine about how they now have nothing to do because they ran out of time.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
It really amazes me at the amount of people who actually come in to threads like this and say something like " omfgz a time limitz on aion?!?! **** that game It suxxx" when it was clearly said many times it was Korean only. Threads like these really bring out the worst in MMO communites, specially the ones who can't be bothered to read past the first three lines in the original post.
Also.... lol@ the guy who called south korea communist, that was priceless. I'm going to assume he thinks North Korea and South Korea are the same country with the same leaders..
This whole thread is hypothetical. The initial OP started this thread to pose a Q and A to see what people would think "IF" such restrictions were placed in the western world, not "WHEN".
It's merely a civilized discussion about ethics, economics and politics. If you can't find it in yourself to read past the first three lines like you suggest, then perhaps you should see your way elsewhere. Don't argue that you're being level with anyone, you came here throwing stones at as many people as you could and it does not make you look more sophisticated than those you throw stones at, for your information. It makes you look worse.
Maybe you just don't have the ability to comprehend, so i'll give you the benefit of the doubt. I am not talking about the OP or the thread in general, I am talking about the people(most likely people such as your self) who come in and just read the first post thinking it is the word of god. They lack the ability to fully read a few simple posts and only base their judgement on a thread full of flaws and no facts.
Do you see where I am going with this or am I just wasting my time trying to explain something so simple, to a simple person?
Good day.

Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths, Enwrought with golden and silver light, The blue and the dim and the dark cloths Of night and light and the half light, I would spread the cloths under your feet: But I, being poor, have only my dreams; I have spread my dreams under your feet; Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

... Nobody tells me, a grown man, how long I can fucking play a video game.
Wanna bet? You are already told to do thousands things and you obey or meet the law enforcement sooner or later.
When at the beginning of 20th century countries started to limit driving speed, the common reaction was the same: nobody will tell me how fast can I fucking drive my own car...and look now :-)
Anyway if the limit is set to 300h/month then the issue stays almost exclusively ideological - because how many players will get even close too that limit? Except of gold farmers and bot-ers that is... I definitely see good sides of introducing such a limit, but think it should be an server-based limit for those who choose it.
Granted, 300 hours a month is a ridiculous amount of time spent on a video game. You're still missing the point. You're associating driving a one ton bullet to something people enjoy doing at home during their own leisure. The comparison makes no sense.
I was unaware this was only going to be enforced in korea... honestly, I don't give a shit what they decide to do so long as this is not accepted in NA. Obviously they feel koreans are not responsible enough. I personally work 7 days a week, hold 2 jobs, own a new truck, have a roof over my head, and a nice relationship. I could never expect to hit the 300 hour mark in a game but having that restriction would turn me off instantly. I will reiterate.... it's something I am using on my own personal time.... it doesn't effect anyone but myself and those close to me.
no, unless we get a discount for unused time. i don't think i could squeeze that much playtime in, but if it's priced comparably to other games, that's unfair from a business standpoint
Ok, are people seriously in anger over this? I mean 300 hrs a month ... 10 hrs a day.. If you get pissed over this you need to get out from time to time. Because it's MY life. I spend my time the way I want.
Realistically, I don't have 300 hours a month to spend on gaming either...but if I did, it would be MY choice to do so. I'm a fucking adult, in charge of my own health, and decisions.
it's the principal of the thing, is what I mean to say. I simply wouldn't play a game that had imposed limits.
Sometimes I get a week off, and just power-game all week, with little to no sleep. I like it...it's my choice to do so...and I pay for the damn game.
LoL....can you imagine the uproar if peoples televisions started shutting themselves off after a pre-determined time?
I always laughed about that too...the people who bitch about how much time I spend playing games, are usually the ones who spend all their free time sitting on their fat asses drooling into a television screen. At least gaming requires thought, reflexes, problem solving skills, social interaction, etc...instead of just mindlessly staring forward.
Anyway.../rant off
I remember back in 1999, folks kept asking me if I was stockpiling food. I always answered, "No, I'm stockpiling ammo and making a list of people who are stockpiling food"
10 hours/day is pretty pathetic anyway. I play games a lot, but 10 hours/day... on 1 game?! Those people really need help, and 10 hours/day is the perfect kind of help. This will also prevent massive afk'ing, saving a lot of server space. Btw, If you have a job/go to school, how can you even play 10 hours/day? 8 hours of work/school, + 10 hours of gaming, leaves you like... 6 hours of sleeping, eating, having a life. And if they don't have a job, they don't have any money. Then how can they afford a decent pc (which Aion will need to witness its full glory)?

You're missing the context of my post. I'm fully aware that this is for Korea only and I'm telling you that if it was implemented here I wouldn't feel it's influence. You need to read and understand everything I've said before you go out and call people stupid.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

You're calling people stupid when you apparently lack enough cognizance to realize the thread is asking whether other mmos ( and therefore other countries ) should do the same as is being done with Aion in Korea.
We realize it is only in Korea in regards to Aions hand-holding hours allotment.
So do yourself a favor and don't call others something which can be applied, apparently, to yourself by your own definition.
At first I thought how limiting a person's game time would be stupid. But then I thought about it ...10 hours a day. Then I got to thinking ....it gives you 8 hours to sleep and another 6 to do whatever. Or you could work for 8 hours and sleep for 6 ...and still get in 10 hours of game time. It wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing if it occured , however I would never lobby for it myself.
hmm some of the reactions are a bit ridiculous. I think a pricing model that went up to say 250 or 300 hours but also allow people to buy additional time if they wanted would be better, because you won't get the outraged jimmies and people would see the cap and know that was plentiful and maybe also strive to stay under it to avoid having to pay for more.
An additional reality is 300 hours a month when you have some maintenance or a patch that probably would make it very hard for anyone to really hit it.

The main thing is once you say "yes" to a game with limits on playing time, you open the door for more and more limits being imposed, not only in that game but every game afterwards.
Now on to my point. I really think 300 hours is an acceptable standard. The west so far doesnt have any time restricted MMOs. But even popular games like WoW (while not imposing a limit) understand that playing for extensive periods of time is bad.
Thats why they have messages indicating hours played or friendly messages saying to take a break. For some people however, there needs to be a hard cap. Incase you havent noticed, welcome to modern day society. Where the intellectual suffer due to the lack of intelligence of a few. Rules like these should be enforced against people it will effect.
300 hours serves as a sufficient. But this is the west we're talking about. I mean 10 hours? Lets see:
Sleep 8 hours. Total breaks throughout day = 1 hour. So we're left with 15 hours right? Wrong.
Having a lifestyle like this will induce over sleeping for most (other than the extremely dedicated). So I'd probably chop that down to perhaps 12-14 hours at most. Anything more than that and its a serious risk to health.
So yeah IMO maybe 12 hours for us Crazy Westerners.
Currently waiting for the MMO industry to put out something good.
I would play on a server with such kind of limit playability, if only to not see someone top level in a matter of days. I'd like a 50 hours per week cap. If you go over, you can still play but getting no experience or loot.
It would be acceptable to me if they only charged 40% of the normal fee ie. $5.99 a month. I'm not paying $15 a month for a service that's available for 300 hrs when it's competitors are available for 744 hours for the same price. It's a cost saving to them (in theory if not in practice|) so they have to pass that on to me otherwise I'm not using it.
Same with internet, I won't use any provider with download limits when I can get unlimited for same price even if I don't use it much.
I really like the idea personally. The only problem I could see is the style the developers choose of how players can sell items (personal stalls). I'm not sure if Aion devs have changed it since I don't keep up with it, but in EQ they had the same thing and the majority if not everyone just left their toons on while they were sleeping and at work. That racks up the hours pretty quick.
I have no objection to this limitation provided the monthly fees are reduced by some amount proportional to the time reduced.
Quick question - have you ever played 300 hours in one month?
Only thing this will do is discourage botters.
BTW, done for Korean legal reasons.

Allowing companies to put limitations on things like this is the beginning of a slippery slope. The whole "unhealthy to set in front of a computer" argument is crap. Companies are in business to make money -- not play nursemaid to obsessive gamers. And I seriously doubt anyone on these forums truely gives flying **** how much their fellow gamers play and whether or not they're "healthy." Get real.
Today it's a limitation on play time, maybe tomorrow they'll just charge by the hour. Who knows? Will you all be licking their boots then? It's funny how quickly people are willing to let a company think for them.
