Hey just wondering if it was worth reactivating my subscription for AoC. ive heard that there are some changes, though im not entirely sure what they are. any info and opinions on the topic is welcome.
Id prefer responses from people who have played the game in the past month.

It depends on what server you play. Couple of servers have medium population while others are ghost towns. Check the official forums for more information.
Also I would wait for server merges and/or DX10. That is the best way to avoid the AoC single player experience.

That depends on why you quit in the first place. Somethings have changed somethings havent. If you quit because you were on a low population server, then you should wait till server merges come before christmas. If you quit because of bugs in game or lack of 1-80 content well most of that is fixed so it could be good to come back. If you quit because of bored with endgame I would wait as not much endgame has been added besides the pvp system.
Well I suspect most people quit just simply due to the memory leaks that was haunting this game for the first months. Also many people were bothered with low performance and some lag. All this is completely rock solid now. If you quit because of these issues it's time to come back!
There was a poll somewhere with 200+ people. Big majority of them said they left because there is no meaningful endgame. There are no news of FC implementing new meaningful endgame pvp content and I'm not resubscribing until they do.
Performance issues you talk about were I think number 2 on that poll.

(OP) yes its definitely worth coming back to AOC.

Next patch will be HUGE and AWESOME
Hope to see you in game m8 ! Good luck !

i did not quit at all because of the memory leaks and errors, it was more due to the lack of endgame content and pvp. i mean there was like 1 siege every 2 weeks on bloodspire. but mostly the pve content of conan was some of the best ive played.i did enjoy leveling my avatar to level 70 but kesh just became a gank fest. im not sure that it helped that i rolled a demo. if some1 could tell me which servers have a decent population much appreciated, since i cant post on the AoC forums until my subscription is reactivated.
ty for all your posts so far. keep em comming
from what I gather...you should wait until Tarantia Commons is in.
As of now though...Cimmeria seems to be the place to be.

well ty, i was thinking of making a new avatar anyway. demo was never realy my style. i heard that Tcomons is going to have a sort of mini rvr, any ideas if there are any plans to make that impact the game or create a purely rvr map for pvp?
keep em comming ya'll
also dunno if it matter but im aussie. so i play in +10 GTM
I thinke this game should make most people happy now. I think it's really fun, and I also play with some friends that also are quite thrilled.
You and your 2 friends like the game so everyone else has to like it too? Lol
The fact is that 90% of players quit after the first couple of months. They didn't all quit because of bugs. Most of them quit because the core of the game was boring to them. They just didn't like the game. Those kind of fundamental flaws cannot be fixed with a patch or two. You need to delete everything and start again.
Sure FC has made many improvements. There are less bugs now and some new content has been added but AoC is still basically the same game we had in launch. In time FC might get some of those 90% back but I'm sure most of them will never return. There are new MMO's being released every month and people have moved on.

What is your point in ridiculing his subjective opinion about the current state of the game? Is that not what this topic was all about in the first place? He is having fun, and gives his advice that is worth getting back to this game. Your contribution is to claim a "fact" that 90% left and then since you know them all, give reasons for their departure.
He gave his opinion. I gave mine. What's your problem?
Even the fanbois know that 85%-90% of players quit the game. Did you even play AoC at that time? I did and I personally saw the mass exodus. I had a guild of 400+ players and every day less and less came online. In the end we had like 15-20 members. And the same thing was happening with all the guilds on my server.
I don't know all of those 600k players who quit but I have read a lot of posts here and on official forums and I believe what I said was accurate. You can go there TODAY and read posts of people complaining about endgame and pleading FC to add more level 80 content.

There is no doubt that there was a max exodus from the game, but in retrospect i haven't heard anything to flash about warhammer online. ive got a couple of mates who play it and their own opinion of the game is that it is lacking as well. so the big question is whats more fun to play.
the topic has been thrown about what can be done to improve AoC but not much has been said about actual improvements that are comming to the game and what FC are striving for in the next 3 - 6 month. these are all things that greatly interest me, specificaly in the next weeks.

Very good point. as a new customer , especially given the way things have gone, i would want to see some pretty solid info.
Personally speaking, I'd suggest waiting a couple of months. Before Xmas we will hopefully see:
Directx 10 features
Server Merges
2 new L80 dungeons (one for soloing, one for groups)
Trial account and digital distribution
Changes to gem cutting and architect crafting
And at the beginning of the New Year:
Reitemisation, stat, feat and skill rebalance closely followed by a class review
Commons District (L75+ new playfield with factions)
Then after that:
House of Crom contested multi group dungeon
Top 10 Most Misused Words in MMO's
ive just been onto the AoC forums and checked out a few things, the most promising thing to date is a letter from the new game director
linked hereforums.ageofconan.com/showthread.php
the 1st thing that he mentions is dx10, i for 1 dont give a stuff about that. what good a gfx if theres no game plus im running xp. FC are also introducion 2 new endgame dungeons in the next update and as we've heard the tarantia commons which is another high level (70+) zone. aparently they will be working on class balances and regiging the items system, though from past expirience i dont see how anything but a massive overhaul could help in this area. some classes in aoc where better from the begining.
im interested to see what other new things they whant to impliment and to see if server mergers have the desired effect
Are you serious? Personally I'd be very surprised if more than ONE of these will make it in before Christmas. Most devs have a Christmas holiday soon and they are probably mentally on holiday already. FC hasn't set any specific dates which usually means a delay. December is not a very productive month. I expect to see more happen in January or early February.

thanks for the heads up. you make an excelent point. you would hope though that under pressure of falling stocks and revenue that funcom would get back at it and finaly add some substance into the spin which we've known them for.
AoC got quite few very good updates in past few months. however if you have something else to play stick with it until you get your free time and they will send some free time to every ex subscriber.
When they start to send the free time you will also know that Funcom feels the game is ready, most likely you can expect that in January or early February 2009.
The most crucial thing now is server merge as if you have your char on some low populated one you will get bored very quickly.
Futilez[Do You Have What It Takes ?]
My advice for a prospective returnee is dependant on what issues you had with the game originally. If it was technical issues, then there is a good chance it will run flawless for you now. If it was due to lack of endgame, then there is not much in there yet. Was it due to low population, choose a highly populated server or wait for merge. Was it due to boring grinding between quests at lvl 50ish, then there is an entirely new zone for you now. And lastly; was it due to endless ganking and no consequence pvp, then there is a system in place for that too.
Most importantly though, is that the game is coming along nicely, allthough there still is a good way to go in respect to endgame, itemization and crafting.
Edit: Was to quick on the post button.
Ok,
1. The content has been added ,and I assume they are going to add more. I would look at the history of Funcom and the way they run the actual company that provides support to the game before making a decision based on Content, and game stability. They have a proven track record for release a good game, AO, then just drop the ball, and go on vacation it seems leaving the players hanging for updates, and improvements.
2. The management problems that seem to plague all companies, and not just Funcom, seem to be more obvious with the Age of Conan release. While I am sure the Gm's do their jobs, the fact of the matter about not having enough trained support during release tends to show that even though they have the ability to release a good game but they always will fall short on supporting the game. No need, the initial sales alone has paid the partners like MS, and the others I am sure, and it is up to Funcom to support the game . The link on the last update for DirectX did not work for me, and I thought that Microsoft was an actual partner in all of this.
3. While the Marketing team of Funcom has spun a great deal of Hype about the game, and the DX10 release, I have yet to get any verification whatsoever about the release date other than Mr. Morrison telling us that it will be December. If I had to trust the word of a Company that waits until the last minute to support a game, well let's just say I can find a lot better things to do with the money than give it away.
4. The overall content in the game is shaping up although it still has performance issues, as does any game released unfinished. The new addition Ymir's Pass is nice, but still, content is only good if it works correctly, and I have seen multiple post about performance issues and crashes while loading the new area.
5. The support staff, if the announcement stands true, I am sure do not make the decisions themselves. The management that runs the staff is solely responsible for any policy and changes that the GM's carry out, so I will not be spculating on the GM's performance since I have never had a problem getting support from them. Since they have released the information about the shakeup, I am wondering how this will affect the game support, and development, and is anyone will to come forward and set this in stone?
6. Overall the game is nice, but the support, and deployment of the game seem to fall a little short from what I have seen. Famine, and the marketing team do a good job of damage control for the public, but that does nothing for the overall shape of the company,, or the state of the game.
To sum this up. If you have a good PC, you should have no problem playing the game in the state it is in. Content is good, however performance tweaks need to be implemented since the last update, and keep an open mind, they announced yesterday about some shake up with the staffing so make your own decision on the support you get if you encounter problems.
I would most likely recommend waiting to see if the DX10 is released when Mr. Morrison has stated since that was the major selling point on this paticular game, and give them a chance to prove what they say is the truth.
SO, if you want to come back, then do it, but it is always good to find out for yourself. $15 is not a bad sacrifice, and the cancel button I am going to assume still does work from the looks of some of the servers populations as stated in a previous post. The server I play on has no problems as far as population, and the game is fun if you can get everything to run correctly.
Seems like the poll is pretty even. Might be a good indicator to wait a little bit longer. Unless you cant to flip a coin
. I am interested to see whether some players will return to AoC January 2009. Luckily for FC most people forget bad service and lying in about 1-2 monts.

I quit once I leveled a character to 80 in less than 2 months (I still have Villa-grinding nightmares) and there was nothing much left to do. Boring. I also left because the gear system bugged me... stats barely meant anything and level 80's looked like level 1's. I never got excited over loot... even purple items weren't exciting. The sheer lack of creativity when it came to mobs annoyed me. I suppose that's due to storyline constraints, but it doesn't stop killing humans in zone after zone from being boring. My friend and I (who also played AoC) are playing WAR now and always cracking up saying things like "If this game was more like AoC we'd be killing our billionth human and getting a new title! Wee! And then taking our prozac! Wee!" I just found the game to be a completely uncreative snoozefest. I don't think any patch could ever fix that. Oh well! To each his own... I've been playing Warhammer ever since it came out and it's a blast.
This game is worth coming back but let me warn you.
Games like Runescape, Lineage II, and WoW have a huge population of over 3 million. Great stable games.
Final Fantasy XI is in the middle, over 500k subscribers. A really stable fan base
Age of Conan is worth coming back but realize it will be like the EverQuest, Warhammer, EvE Online, and LOTR Online with a minor population, not having the potential to reach 1 or even 2 million players.
So, I'm hoping for an Aion Online with over 3 million subs.
since i haven't voted i can read the votes tally, kinda stupid. in regards to every1 saying dvx 10 will imrpove the game, i disagree the graphix where still great when i left after about 2 months playing and since im on xo so that doesn't realy matter. i never realy had any game errors apart from the odd memory leak. im running
2.4ghz quad core
4g ram
nvida 9600GT
so i never realy have any gfx troubles.
i think you have an exelent point scaredgirl. but i dont think its entirely about people forgeting bad service and more about FC being under new management and hopefully some actual pressure to deliver.
