Mercenary's wooden box

I've just tried hiring an artilleryman but I'm not sure if I was successful... I tried giving him 50k, then another 50k when suddenly I received a Mercenary's wooden box. I tried to open it but it was unsuccessful to receive the item. Was that suppose to be the artillery merc? I'm still just allowed to have 7 members in my team (I'm lvl 37) and I have 1 occupied merc room. Should I have opened a new one before I hire a new merc so that merc will automatically go there?

You will only recruit the mercenary into your party if you have an open spot at that time. When you don't have room for them, they just give you the box instead. (They won't just go straight to your merc room)
maybe because you dont have a slot for that mercs thats why the wandering merc only gives you a wooden box... and that wooden box doesnt contain mercs, it is only like a metrial box that gives you item....
yeah I did this same mistake when I was level 30, those artilleryman are scam artists. for 200k I got 16 maple, and 8 bones of some sort (long time ago), I was like WTF OMGZ!
You were given that box because you had a full party. ^-^ No slot for that merc. That quest will be explained at around level 50 once you are doing the bran castle questline.
Oh! So I just basically wasted 100k huh?
But, why did I fail to receive the items from the mercenary wooden box? My inventory still had space at that time...
It's just like a higher level mat box, which all have a certain chance of failing and giving you nothing at all.
Oh, I see... It's the first time I've experienced failure to receive from a box so I was kinda depressed. Thanks for clearing things up.
Yep, it will say "Obtaining items fail" with a red X to the left. But all is good, as this game basically rely on rolls most of the time so it is expected.
woah. that's a lot of money spent for the wandering merc. the techniques there actually is also through giving small increments of money like 5k at a time. also, as they said, make sure there's an opening in the party before you go hiring them. some also say that you shouldn't bring a big amount of money with you when hiring mercs as this will increase the tendency that you might not get them.

yeah i think you can abuse it to gain boxes, because selling boxes is one way to get rich in atlantica
