After watching the gameplay trailer..... I got bored

cataphrachtcataphracht Member Posts: 50

The game looks wierd, awkard character movement, what kind of game is this? Every minute the characters were screaming and fighting each other... I think this is going to be basically a fps game with the element of sword bow and magic to replace the guns.

They showed fighting for 29 minutes off the video 5 seconds of a dwarf using a blacksmith hammer (crafting does'nt look interesting), some really crap graphics with the ship battles.

When they go in the actual town for 2 seconds well the game looks better but with all the fighting they're doing it just looks yuk, it's the movement it doesn't look enjoying.

I was hoping that this game was going to be like a classic, Unfortunately the video has put me off.

The main thing that's happened is while I watched the trailer  I noticed that if your not fighting other people there's nothing too keep you specifically interested.

Anyone feel the same? Bah maybe my expectations have just rocketed after playing fallout :P I wish they made that into a mmo.......

It looks more like a cross between Shadowbane, Dark & Light, and FreeWorld to me.

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

First off, This game may be for you, that is something that you are going to have to figure out.

The video showed 20 minutes of fighting because this game has always been promoted as a PVP game. So they are going to show you the big PVP fights, and the shipboards fights and seiges. There will of course be other things to do in the game but they are really selling the PVP so that is what you are going to see the most.

I have yet to see anything on crafting but it is said that every item in game can be crafted by the players. I have also heard that the crafting is pretty complex and not just button smashing.

The graphics are not as good as alot of the games coming out now (AOC) but from day one graphics have not been the selling point for this game. I like graphics as much as the next guy but i will play a good game with EQ graphics before i play a bad game with AOC graphics.

If you are remotely interested then keep looking into the game, if not then no worries, find something that does interest you. This game will certainly not be for everyone.

And dont let the haters or the fanboys decide for you. They can both be very harsh on this forum. I have never played PVP once and i am very interested in this game because of all the other features it is supposed to have. I will be deciding if i am going to give it a shot here in the near future but i want to see how BETA goes and probably launch as well before i commite.

I have to agree. The video was pretty ugly in my opinion. The animations were dull, graphics bland and clunky, and avatars all looked the same. I thought for a minute that I was seeing a video clip for DAoC.

I like what Ive read about the sandbox approach with skills and crafting. So regardless of what the video looked like, I will give this game a shot. Ive played less than stellar MMO's before like Star Wars Galaxies because the crafting was awesome.

Still, I dont get what the hype is about. My guess is its frustration and anger for the sheer lack of a decent sandbox game these days. So the followers of this game will defend it as though it was their baby. The responses here of "kthxbye" and "this isnt the game for you" are short-sighted and off target.

Take away the hype, hope, and beer goggles and the video showed a pretty uninspiring ugly game

    the vid was heavly compressed

I had the same feeling, especially when the ships were sinking I've never seen a ship take damage from the side and sink straight down like that. I't was a bit of a dissapointment for me.

The graphics and animations looks like a kid playing with action figures with movable joints in the trailer.

This is a sandbox game, in other words you make the game what you want it to be. Sandbox games are generally way more indepth in many areas than themepark games Take the crafting for example, you can create any item in game, the economy is also player driven meaning that crafters are actually pretty much a necessity and are useful to other people apart from them selves.

The game catch to Darkfall though is that the brunt of it is about warfare, its an rpg in a dark gritty world of war and control, but it is still going to be a very indepth rpg. In my opinion the closest games it will be similar to are probably UO/Shadowbane.

UO because it is a sandbox with a player driven economy and indepth crafting (Darkfall may not be as indepth crafting wise as UO though, we dont really know yet) and the fact there are player created building/city's and its also skill based.

    And

Shadowbane because blatently a large part of the game will be city vs city, control and player conflict.

Another catch is the fact that it has manual combat and aiming for spells/bow, this means the most skillful will be dominant, you actually need your wits about you and not just have better gear, if you are skilled at using the combat system you can actually beat someone with much better gear than you.

I think all this in a game would be very fun and in theory the game should be good because i think the concept is good. There are obviously game breakers though, personally the animations (btw there is still a possibility that the animations are not actually finished) even though they arnt that great, isnt a game breaker for me because the actual combat system and features way outweigh small factors like this. If your a graphics junkie then perhaps you need to look elsewhere but im telling you now, graphics dont really mean squat if the game mechanics suck. Aventurine have built the engine so it supports very large battles, this means that certain things will have to be a bit minimalistic so that this works, for example hit boxes, and certain graphics and mechanics.

    Heres to hope for Darkfall.

Started playing mmorpg's in 1996 and have been hooked ever since. It began with The Kingdom of Drakkar, Ultima Online, Everquest, DAoC, WoW...

Damn it!  There goes another 3 minutes of my life reading pointless replies.

edit: And It doesn't suprise me that most kiddies wont play this game because of the graphics.  Since the majority of them have A.D.D they need those bright colorfull, new everything graphics to keep them playing for a month.

*points at War*  have the subs started to fall yet?  Its been about a month.

I honestly don't see what people are so hyped about about this game for. The combat looks very choppy and sluggish but I suppose one will never know until you try it.

    OP:

Indeed the trailer put me off greatly aswell because it looked so unfluid and stiff.

But that is just judgeing from that, gotta test it out to be sure. It sure LOOKS stiff and bulky but it might not FEEL that way

What is involved in fixing something like that when it comes to coding

Yeh, the developers are a big fail at making good gameplay videos, I really hope it's because all their skillpoints went to game making skills.

On a sidenote, I find people who judge games by how fluid game character movement is to be quite pathetic individuals.

  • cataphrachtcataphracht Member Posts: 50

If the develepors fail at making a good advert of their game what chance have they got to make a good game altogether?

Furthermore what you are talking about does'nt make sense, lol skillpoints you obviously need a break from games from the sound of it.

Oh yeah it's quite funny, I find people who has their avator name as sandboxy and lurking around darkfall forums all day are somewhat pathetic actually.

Reread your last line I think it's the total opposite, the character motion and movement is very important I don't know how anyone can be satisfied with clunky movement - name a game thats been successful with clunky movement and awkard motions.

    ROFL.

Okaaaay.  Well, I don't judge an entire GAME from that point alone, to be sure, however....the more smooth/fluid the character combat movement IS in a game, and the more it feels like a natural extension of your actions, the better.  Why?  Well ONE reason is the game immersion is not broken when the movement is fluid.  If it's clunky and awkward, it just feels like....a game.  It loses all sense of suspension of disbelief and immersion in the game environment.  ANOTHER reason is that if the combat has fluid movement, it makes it much easier to control your character, thereby making it easier for you to get DONE what you need to get done, whether that is killing a boss, 10 quest mobs, or the small army of gankers than are coming to slay you.....LOL!

I, personally, find it hard to imagine that fluid combat/character movement would NOT be important to everyone.  O.o

An expert gamer?  HAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!  OMG, tell me you didn't just say that.  You need to have a sit down interview with some real life expert gamers (you know, the ones that play professionally) and ASK them how important fluidity of movement IS in a game.

To ME, what you said here, sounds like making excuses for a designer's bad combat movement design.  Puhhhlleeease.  Clunky movement isn't coded in to a game to provide "expert gamers" with a challenge.  It's poor game design.  Expert gamers don't require and DESIRE for their characters to be uncomfortable and awkward to control.  As a matter of fact, they go to great lengths to buy even hardware and peripherals  that INCREASE pinpoint precision/accurate control of their characters (very very high dpsi mouse, special mousepads, etc.)

Just WHEN are gamers going to STOP MAKING EXCUSES  FOR BAD GAME DESIGN for their pet game's developers/designers and coding specialists?  With the technology we have today, there is NO EXCUSE for crappy character control mechanics....NONE.

By the way.....I'm not sure why there is even an argument about this.  I don't believe Darkfall will be released with crappy character control.  They've been in development FAR too long.  But to act as if you're somehow an "expert gamer" because you're willing to deal with clunky character movement.....

    THAT is laughable.

do not let trailers discourage you. remember that most videos of any game are crappy quality and do not show the greatness of graphics. just think of the game which you consider to have the best graphics and try to find some movies about it on the web, you will understand.

to me graphics is as important as gameplay. i quit the best mmo out there because of ugly graphics (shadowbane). i was not impressed with DF videos either but i will wait with my judgement untill i see it live. and so i reccommend to the rest who complain about crappy DF graphics

    Playing: Rohan
Played (from best to worst): Shadowbane, Guild Wars, Shayia, Age of Conan, Warhammer, Runes of Magic, Rappelz, Archlord, Knight online, King of Kings, Kal online, Last chaos

Clunky movement and awkward motions is a lot better than reading text, and there have been a number of successful text-based games, called MUDs. The fact of the matter is that graphics and animations are much better than they were a few years ago, yet people are still pathetic enough to require top-of-the-line gaphics and animations form everything. Spoiled brats.

I am a skeptical supporter of DF. I am not a fanboi nor a troll. I seek the truth in every discussion, and I am truly sorry if I mistakenly state a fallacy.
