I hate to say it, but, I told you so. I would not touch any kind of coffee, tea, or creamer (am I the only one noticing something here?) because I fully expect this to go on for at least another month, at least as encompassing as any other Chinese contamination we have seen so far.

edit:

"An investigator from her group found milk from China as an ingredient in yogurt drinks, biscuits, buns and pastries in Asian markets in Arlington, Virginia, she said in a telephone interview. "

I don't think it should stop at dairy products. A ban on all Chinese-made products should be implemented. I do understand a vast majority of products are from China, but we need to start depending on ourselves again and not the tainted products of China.

The economical and international political damage that would cause to the United States would be enormous.

Well lets see hmmm... the Chinese government already told its banks not to do business with ours, the 700 billion bailout was for them, and they can't or won't enforce any kind of regulation on all of the toxic crap that they send over here.

Gosh golly gee wiz Prae, seems like we already have that "economical and international political damage" right now!

It has been in the back of my mind that the contamination was deliberate this time, a subliminal threat. Seriously, the instant coffee and tea? Bottom line is that China is consistently sending over DEADLY, LETHAL products to us. I don't think we are catching more than a fraction of the tainted crap at any given time. But oh noez lets not upset the Chinese, or lose the popularity contest... its better for our kids to chew on lead toys and our pets to die from various poisons in their food.

Well, you could always stop buying Chinese products yourself if you don't want that to happen. Either that or more quality control before import. You shouldn't always trust on the government to babysit everyone.

I'm not, however, an economist in any way beyond an advanced introductory course. I know a few things on global politics from several university courses but I am not in any way a PhD (or even a BSc) specialising in that subject. It would just seem that from a country as gigantic as China with its huge trade output, there are bound to be a few incidents with less-than-healthy materials. Especially considering their poor quality control. This debate springs up every now and then this happens, but would it really justify banning that juggernaut of a country in trade? It's not a popularity contest you're talking about - this is global politics. And I feel the common plebians (that includes me) play armchair-diplomat/world leader too much while knowing far too little while posting on public forums.

Please don't take anything I said for granted. Like I said, I suspect I know far too little to say anything intelligent about the situation. But I suspect that counts for just about everybody in here.

Also, that 'golly gee wiz' line sounded rather patronising. Might want to avoid that in the future.

It was sarcastic and patronising, but it wasn't actually meant for you so don't take it personally. That was meant for the government.

I already avoid buying Chinese products, and a flat out ban wouldn't require babysitting- quite the opposite. What we are doing right now is a half@ssed job of babysitting where we, once in a while, check what is coming in with our whole 72 individuals that are very dedicated.

Whether or not we are getting massive amounts of deadly products simply because China is big is a non-issue. What matters is that we are, have been, and will continue to do so. I emphasize my opinion that we do not, nor will we ever, catch all of the deadly tainted crap coming in from China. Look at the lead-painted toys, we only recently discovered that and it went back DECADES and affected millions and millions and millions of toys.

Oh and did I mention that I suspect this latest thing might have been deliberate? Where exactly do we draw the line? Short of an actual attack with troops and missiles, what is left at this point?

There's reason to be worried about this though, until China gets over its reputation with bad quality products. Even Japan had to deal with quality issues until the 80's when their products where generally regarded as very high quality. If China wants their product image to improve, then their products itself must improve. Until then, people will always be skeptical, whether its deserved or not.
