I've played MMO's since back in the day and the original Ultima Online. Since then (about 10 years or so), there have been exactly two MMO's that have had it all. And by having it all I mean, PvP, PvE, lots of updated content, blanced, flushed out rule sets, few bugs, the whole shootin' match.
The two games I speak of are WoW and UO, both of those games were flushed out when they were released, sure they had their issues, but when the games were launched, they were finished games, they had everything they were going to have when they launched, and anything that was added after launch was not to deliver some feature promised pre-release, it was to add more content or add additional functionality that was above and beyond what was promised in the base game. You can argue the point that these two games were the best ever, but the stats don't lie. WoW has the largest player base ever for an MMO and UO is still consistently rated in the top 10 MMO's after all these years.
There have been other games that have come close to being complete, Everquest, DoC, AoC,LotRO etc, but really only two that have been good solid games with ongoing playability. A couple of examples of what I am talking about:
SWG - Can't believe they launched it without vehicles or space
PotBS - Ship combat was great, but the economy and avatar combat were after thoughts
AoC - Alot of nice features but unfinished siege warfare, economy, repetitive content, got boring quick.
MxO - repetitive PvE content, lots of bugs, lots of lag
LotRO - Nice game but lacking content, PvP not all that great, economy needed work, repetitive content
CoH - Launched w/out PvP, added later as an expansion
EvE - One of my favorites, problem with this was it's just too big. Takes a half an hour to an hour just to get people together to do something. "I'm 20 jumps away, I'll be there in about 30 minutes" They've added content and things to mitigate the mindless jumping, but for most people it was too little too late. I think these guys have come the closest of anyone, but still, it's lacking something.
I'm not saying these aren't good games now, but when they were launched there were big parts missing and they weren't added or fixed until some time after the game was released. In other words they closed the barn door after the horse was already gone, to coin a phrase. Players leave and don't come back, even if the features they wanted are added later, players sometimes feel so burned by the experience, they don't come back.
There have been lots of others, but those are the major ones that could have been a contenders if they just waited a bit longer and fixed a few more bugs, were a bit more responsive to their communities and released a complete product.
There seems to be a malaise in the MMO business and it's this, games are released before they are ready. I'm not sure why, but it probably has something to do with marketing. Engineering: "This game isn't ready yet" Marketing: "We have to ship it now to generate revenue, we promised a ship date of XXX".... 3 or 4 months later Marketing: "Hey why are all of our players leaving in large numbers? It must be engineering's fault, all the bugs they left in, and content they did't get done".
Maybe they don't care, maybe if they get their $50 and a month or two of subscription it pays for their development time and they make a bit of a profit, so what if the game is schlock and people don't stick around, as long as you recoup your investment and make a little cash on the side, it's all good right?
I think the gauntlet has been thrown down by WoW, is there a gaming company that can compete? Will anyone release an MMO as complete as WoW or UO? I think WoW has set the bar, the question is, will anyone pick up the challenge and release an MMO that is ready for prime time, or will they continue with the existing program, which is to release games almost done, with a few bits to add later?
On the Horizon I'm looking forward to
Star Trek Online - I'm not holding up alot of hope for this, it's been in and out and all around, but nothing solid yet.
Jumpgate Evolution - I really liked the gameplay in the original version, it didn't have any economy and no PvE content to speak of, I'd like to see this one do well.
Battlefield Heroes - I've been a big fan of the BF games 1942 is still my favorite, it's free to play so I'm wondering what the hook will be, i.e. how are they going to make their money and will it make the game suck for people that don't pony up.

You trolling, boy? Howcome you haven't even mentioned WAR?
It isn't mentioned because it's the ugly mutant child of WoW and DaoC.
Also, In Before Darkfall
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
On we sweep with threshing oar, our only goal will be the western shore."
How is it possible to make a post about looking for the successor of UO and *not* mention Darkfall?
I'm kinda scared at how many of the SAME threads I've seen with different names. Yes, MMO's are becoming unoriginal, so use your time to go find a better game, or better yet, start developing your own game.
Complaining about it on this forum is going to do nothing but up your post count...

Their will never ever be a large scale hit like WoW had, with the way new mmo's have been lately :P
Sigh it is so sad that you people have absolute no experience with all MMORPG and "claims" --- "I play them all".
Note: FFXI is the only perfect launch in mmo gaming history "period". Only the true japanese imports can tell you that, but for Americans player, they would also say the same thing because they play with the japanese that been in the game half a year ago. Why? because PS2 can't afford to be boink unlike PC..SE make sure the game launch was smooth.
Have you even play Final fantasy XI online? How can you claim there is "no originally" when you never even touch Final fantasy online?
Have you played a game where you can be multi job? have unlimit class potential? Not just re-assign your talents or whatever but changing the combination? A game that can be "attacker" or "healer" or "support" or "just screwing around" at anytime?
have you played a game with a "SIEGE" that happen 2-3 time a day that have 700 REAL players protecting the city and protecting their "way of leveling"? (losing a battle mean, people can't level because they lose points that can gain and a 15% EXP bonus, also impair the whole city ...because NPC are kidnapped left and right and you can't use "teleport")
Have you played a game with tear breaking story with awesome cutscenes and a real challenge that isn't all about following the pattern?
Have you played a game where there is a feature that give you a "pet" that growth with you and fought alone side with you ? (fellowship system - can give him item, ...create a bond and do combos)
Have you even level with a party and fought monsters that cover a whole area that cover over 500 people?
You just haven't try final fantasy online... or you did but didn't not reach beyond level 5.. because it is "TOO HARD" for you.
DON'T worry, SE are making FFXI easier for noobs now..with the level sync system.
none
From 2010 on.
I'll admit, I quit FFXI at level 13, but not because it was too hard. Because it wasn't fun. I had to sit and sell myself like a prostitute on the street to get people to let me in their party to play the game. If I couldn't get in a party, then I couldn't play. It doesn't make the game "hard" and me a "noob" to force parties on people. When I did get a party, there was always someone playing his 3rd guy and just pulled me along and told me what to do. It had some great features but even to this day its fundamentally flawed to me and I'll never, ever play it again.
When some of the top companies who makes games for consoles decide to want a piece of the pie.
hehe, I didn't realize until after I posted, that this is total troll/fanbois bait. I was just frustrated at the lack of choices in the MMO world and was just venting. Some of my guild-mates are going back to WoW and I've played that game out. The problem is that althought there are some good games out there, most of them are missing something big. That something misses the mass appeal that UO and WoW had/have. Those games are something that all of our members, whether they like PvP, PvE or Crafting/Economy, can find something to keep them consistently engaged. The others we have played as a group just didn't hold peoples' interest and after a little while folks left for other games or interests.
It seems like nowadays most of the development resources are going to console titles and PC games are not as hot as they once were. People are saying "I can spend $3000-$4000 on a nice PC gaming rig, or I can spend $500 on a console for my gaming"
The 'problem' with the MMO industry is that a game like WoW is absolutely dominating it. No one is even close atm. 90% of new games will try to follow that game model because the ultimate goal is money. I totally agree with you there. Sure, they'll throw in a few new/modified features (see WAR) but in the end it's very much the same game.
As a Darkfall follower (see: fanboy), I'm disappointed it wasn't mentioned seeing as how it is the best chance to go against what WoW has established. It's important to note that they're taking their sweet-ass time putting this game out in an attempt to make it as solid and complete as possible for beta and eventually launch. Considering that is exactly what you're asking for, I really think it's worth considering. Also Mortal Online might be one to watch for.

I'm sorry but Darkfall will be a niche game. the majority of players who have been brought into the mmo genre are looking for a different type of entertainment.
Don't get me wrong. I want Darkfall to be released because obviously there is a market for it and a whole slew of disenfranchised players. But the average mmo player is not a dark fall player.

Then the 'average MMO player' will never be satisfied, so long as WoW is the gold standard.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but the OP's topic says "When will someone come out with a decent new MMO?"...
All the ones he complained about were decent in the ways he commented on them. But hey, if he's so selfish that he wants a perfect mmo, he should check out my sig

The best game ever for originality, best replay value, and most customizable content! The pioneer of all mmo's....Ultima Online....This game was the only online game ive ever seen come out that you could make a character ANY way you want you could wear anything you could have anything as a pet you could own a house....build a guild hunt for aritfacts.... You could even grow plants! Ive been playing that game off and on for almost 8 years now!
Ive played nearly every mmorpg out there and still none comes close to the content that ultima online had!
Ps: This game had one of the best pvp systems!
Edit: Grammar Failure

decent doesn't meant great, awesome, nor incredible. and there's more than enough "decent" mmorpgs around, just not great ones.

I don't know there are a lot of "decent" mmos out and hell a few Good ones also.
EQ2, LotRO, WoW, Eve, Ryzom, UO, CoX, Vanguard, EQ1, AC1, Wurm Online, DAoC, WAR, PotBS, TR, AO
DDO, FFXI, GW, L2, are all Atleast decent and atleast half of these are good.
Hell even F2p games like Perfect world, Cabal online, Silkroad, Atlantica Online, Mabinogi, Runescape, 4Story, Last Chaos, Arch Lord, Requiem are Decent.
So what are you talking about? seriously only two games huh? WoW and UO? what about EQ1 and AC1?
DAoC? FFXI? I think your looking for the perfect MMO and I'm sorry to say it doesnt exist.
Maybe you will be happy with Dark fall, Crusades, Earthrise, mortal online, Fallen earth, Aion, STO, JGE, CO
TCoS in the future.
Players need to stop being so picky
Playing: Nothing
Looking forward to: Nothing
What, you mean like: Activision? EA?

im to lazy too use grammar or punctuation good
Some of the things I enjoyed in UO that I haven't seen done well since:
1. Thieves/Rogue class could actually steal things from other players, not just pick locks.
2. Open PvP, this had the unintended effect that "Uber" gear didn't matter as much, people didn't walk around with their phat loot and PWN everyone, because someone could kill them and take it which brings me to.
3. Corpse looting. You kill someone, you take their stuff (If you want)
4. GM Involvement, I'll never forget when a GM showed up in front of our guild hall and dropped a black gem that started spawning hordes of spiders that laid waste to our town.
5. Housing - build your own house, build your own town.
6. Travel Runes/Teleport Spells/Scrolls - If you had the right runes, and a book and some scrolls any chracter could get anywhere easily, you didn't have to ride/walk forever to get from point A to point B even though it was a pretty large world.
7. No factions other than player created - again the Open PvP, you don't know if that person you talking to is your friend or will stick a knife in your ribs, very exciting, people tend to take their chars too seriously and take getitng killed too personally these days. Players made their own factions, wars, etc. Good fun, lots of large PvP battles w/ 100+ people.
I'd like to see UO do a grahpics update, bring it up to todays standards, w/ the pre-Felucca/Trammel ruleset. That would be a game worth playing. The others since I've played for a month or two, but they just don't have the long terrm apeal that the old UO had. Nobody else has come close, except for WoW. WoW didn't do all that much that was new, they just took what had been done before and gave it alot of polish. IMO though WoW is a land of Care Bears.
He/She did say a good game not another LOOK MA NO BRAINS. Then again who wants a game where we must think. "well damn me to hell for thinking that".
For me its lacking Ambulation I really want to be able to sit in a station and design costumes and stuff for fun.
That being said I think you're doing it wrong. It makes no sense for guildmates to be 20 jumps apart in EVE. You can takeover space in this game. Why are you split apart??? Move to 0.0, takeover space. There, you can grind on nearby mobs. If you want missions, then you might need to move closer to Empire sure or build a jump bridge to get you to Empire and make deals with the Alliance that owns that region
You can get around the star gate issue in most cases. The issue you listed might be a problem for some people true- but it does not have to be one.
Sandbox- there is always another way to handle a problem!
For people like us that list is a wet dream but for others I guess they must hate it. I can never understand why and I am glad that I can't see things from their eyes (mainstream)
I might crank up UO myself for a bit. Was hoping linkrealms.com would go live soon too since its very similar to UO in many ways
Am I the only person who still liked the game Post Trammel? I mean It sucked we all know that much, but I still played for a long time to come. Also everything in your post is spot on, almost makes me shed a tear of happiness. Darkfall is my hope for the future.
