Im interested in WAR but ...

Iv'e been looking into this game for about a week or so now, well aware of its development I forgot about it and now im interested again, yipee.

Theres a couple of things that I have not seen in this game so far that could put me off  and hopefully someone will be able to clear up these questions.

1) Can you put your weapon away and not carry it in your hands all the time? May seem stupid but its just goddamn idiotic looking if you got your sword out all the time. Not even Conan the Barbarian carries crom in his hand all the time, and he could if he wanted to. But he does'nt because he wants to look cool.

2) Is the combat really that bad? It looks exactly like WoW to me. Attack, press 1, 5, 7 repeat .. dead.

3) What happens when you die? Do you become a spirit with no xp penalty and run back to your body to get killed by the same thing again?

4) RP Servers .. Am I going to have to of studied 25 years of Warhammer history and mythology to make sure im not speaking like a goon?

Maybe I havent looked into the game and these may seem like "noob" questions. But to be honest if your just gonna try and flame me keep it to yourself im not interested.

Hopefully someone polite and considerate will reply to my post.

Thanks

    1) No, you can put your weapon on your back... whether a caster, or a fighter class, staves, swords, shields, etc can be placed on your back when out of combat

    2) Im not sure what you are getting at. The combat system is a time-delay system. not your "revolutionary" system, however, every class has some interesting aspect to it. ex. My archmage's healing abilities increase the more damage spells i do, and vice versa. Thus i open fights by doing my insta damage attacks, so that i have a big heal that i can cast instantly, that normally was 3 seconds to cast.

    3) As of right now, the death penalty is  minimal. In RvR scenarios, there is no penalty... simply release and get back out to the fight! In the world, you lose constitution (hp points) that you can then buy back from a healer (super cheap... im talking, non-factor cheap). Its not about punishing your players , they want us to get into the fights and not be afraid to get where the action is!

    4) Oi ! Youz git smash dem Stuntiez! Yea, the "lore" behind Warhammer is pretty nice, and with the Tome of Knowledge, you have the opportunity to really get into it. (the Tome is chuck full of lore about lands, races, places, events, etc).  As to sounding like an idiot, you dont have to worry about it. I mean, what posistion is a roleplayer in to make fun of someone else for sounding stupid...

But yes, as a last little note... I LOVE this game. I played DAoC for 6 years, and this game is amazing to me. I love the various aspects that have been put into it, and i think it will only get better.  (Yes, i like the WoW style graphics... Yes, i like the WoW style movements... Yes i like the WoW style questing... Yes, i like the WoW style UI... Yes, i like the RvR aspect... Yes, you should play about lvl 10 before making assumptions about the game you dirty dirty trolls!)

    :) Thankyou for your reply.

Well that cleared a few problems up. I mean I played WoW for a while then stopped cause i woke up. I've pretty much played every single MMO including alot of the F2P ones to try and really get into them but its never worked.

I'm just too demanding i guess haha!

Well hopefully WAR delivers. It seems the PvP is awesome and the fact you can level up with just the PvP seems very cool.

Only thing i'll get annoyed about are retarded WoW bashers in it, but im sure they'll flock away when the new expansion of ever boring comes out.

Im sure ill be joining you very soon.

Thanks again for the help and making my decision.

    YES

No it isn't. It is much much better than WoW. Amongst other things group synergies are fantastic. Different classes complement each other in so many different ways that it is crazy. Collision detection is a fantastic thing as well, wonderfully compensating for lack of overpowered CC (it works in PvP only though, probably to prevent excessive weirdness with mob AI glitches).
PvE combat is about the same as WoW although I'd say classes are a bit more complex than WoW.

    3) What happens when you die? Do you become a spirit with no xp penalty and run back to your body to get killed by the same thing again?
You respawn at the nearest graveyard with a minor debuff (-10% max hp) that wears off after a few minutes or you can buy it off for some very minor $$.

    4) RP Servers .. Am I going to have to of studied 25 years of Warhammer history and mythology to make sure im not speaking like a goon?
Don't think so. I got some friends on a RP server and all roleplaying is consensual so far. No RP-police there. Just don't name your character Chucknorris or discuss football scores in /general.
And oh yeah, Tome of Knowledge contains all the lore you'll need for RP-ing like a pro. And it unlocks at a nice and comfortable pace. It really is worth browsing through.

    1. yes, you can put it away.

    2. combat is not "bad", it is good.

Yes, it works with action bars and a timer. You can spam your most powerful attack all the time, or like me you can think about what works best in a given situation in a certain order. Some DOT are stackable, so you can decide to stack them or do something else, some DOT are 20 secs while another may be 9 secs, so you have to decide if you want to fire off the longer one first.

Dispel magic is one of my favorite spells, because it takes away action points, which causes some casters to stand there going "Wait...what?" because they suddenly don't have the AP to do their big cast on me.

It also looks cool as heck.

    3. exestential question, you can't know what happens when you die. So waste not a second of thinking on it in life.

Oh you mean in the game?

You respawn some where, not too much worse for the wear. You get a small penalty that can be easily removed by a healer or if you are a noob you can run around with 4X wound penalty wondering why you keep dying.

In scenarios, there is no penalty to dying.

I am not higher than 12th level to tell you what happens at higher levels if gear gets damaged, but so far no need to repair any of it.

    4. The RP servers seem to attract mature and intelligent players for the most part.

You generally won't see someone named "Turdpumper99" or "IthurtswhenIpee" as a character on a RP server. These trolls generally change my immersion factor back to zero.

To me, RP means just doing what your character would do.

If I am a Witch Hunter, I am going to hunt down chaos and mutants wherever I can and prioritize those missions, if I am a Dark Elf than I will delight in hurting my fairer high elven cousins cause, etc.

I don't think you have to speak in pidgin shakespeare and be all "But Gregorian, doth thou know that thine aren't in the city of Altdorf, but upon the crags of middenheim, and here it is, that the great Bargrim did.."

Anyone who thinks that, has misunderstood the point of RP to the point of making it sound cartoony, the way that someone who thinks Dungeons and Dragons players would do that, and for the most, I've never met any who did.

To me, I am playing the game not for stats and numbers, but to enjoy the world, so RP is the way to go, because I want to be a part of it.

    I agree with Lewkas.

Besides; apart from your ideas about certain mmo aspects that you are accustomed to, and want to know more about beforehand, WAR has a habit to surprise you with how they implemented some of the basics that you easily look over when trying to get info on the game and I think in how they thought out and implemented those basics is what makes the game shine.

For instance how RvR and PQ's are a natural part of the gameworld and how it makes those zones feel more alive. Or how they designed those zones themselves with smart questnode placing.

All in all I have the distinct impression that their main aim was to get rid of annoying timesinks in mmo's like hoping for rare drops in repetative kill/collect quests, being sent all over the world and back on some travelling line or grinding your arse off to level your profession. They replaced those obvious timesinks with stuff which is more fun and can be enjoyed as a solo player or as a group.

It's vastly complex in it's simplicity. And like Lewkas said; you have to get to at least level 10ish and see some more of the world before you realize that it's more then a mere wow clone.

Aye, the combat mechanic in War might not be awe inspiring, but the healing/damage balance system is a nice thing to add in.

Honestly, it was never the 1,2,3 repeat that was the problem. You can't get a different system than that without using a different control.

The problem was that people wanted more than just 1,2,3... and I think WAR brings that forward.

Yeah, you still push your typical keys, but now depending on what you push, what order, you will get different  benefits. for some classes, more damage benefits on a later push... for others more healing.

Taunts now have an affect on players, and I have 3 different moves I could use on a player, one benefits me, one removes a benefit from them, and one helps my group.

Choices... and I get to do it in many different orders!

    I play a Swordmaster btw.

    Amazing! I recommend it!

Yeah, Swordmaster is my fave as well.. That 1,2,3 mechanic has such a nice rhythm to it, you almost feel like swinging a sword... swing, swing, stab! slash, swing, spin-swing! Really nice tactile feel to it.

    But I digress... carry on.
