Biggest Problem: Community

You could get more general chat in EQ1 than on any WAR server I was on yesterday. People don't want to play together anymore I guess.

You won't have a decent community until developers start making again games where you need the people tu survive. Like it happened in classic EQ.

Once communities have established and we get closer to lvl 40 content, you will notice more chat. Honestly, did you really expect a ton of talk in the teir 1 area during open beta? This is everyone's chance to try out the game. They want to get to sieging as fast as possible.

I didn't notice a lack of community, although I did notice the lack of general chat use.

General chat in WAR is not global, it is mini-area based (similar to chat only appearing in "zones" in other games.

Typically I found myself jumping into open parties and chatting with people there. Especially in a 24-person Warband, how many other people do you really need to chat with at once?

Interesting. For you community = chat. You might just have to wait until the actual release and the really big populations to get chat. I'll have to check back with you after release to see if things change.

For myself, I always turn off general chat because all the "your mother" inanity spoils the suspension of disbelieve and immersion I am looking for in an MMORPG. For me community is my guild and what we can accomplish as a team. Most of our chatter is in Ventrilo.

Think the 'lack of community' is a mix of Sub zones of chat, think there is 3 per side in T1 (maybe 4, didn't notice if you moved into a new one once you moved from rvr into norsca)  so you really don't see alot of 'general' chat just people asking for help when they get stumped on a quest.  The other factor is that the game is still not released.  Most people probably would rather level atm rahter then chat extensively.

Also warbands are popular in the game right from the start in T1 rvr, so alot of people just group up and talk there.

This topic pops up in every MMO that is about to get released.

The more popular the game, the more chances to find people that will annoy you. Beta free ride (aka no commitment) makes things much worse.

totally true, it was even hard to just level at the beggining of eq1 so you always needed someone, take that away and people will be rude as they dont need you, its a sad fact

Like in most MMO games i turn off Gchat.

As for solo, who else can you trust.

No need to party anymore, most if not more than most mmo games are Single player type games but with a twist of Road Rage tosses in. (Road Rage = Other people to yell at). It's not 1999. game have become ?.

A Place of crime and keyboard hero's.

Guilds are where most people socialize these days.

Times have changed since eq1's release ten years ago, nearly everyone and their granny has access to broad band Internet and can play.

eq1's community was mostly made up of early adopters of the Internet, eg, nerds.

Same thing happened to usenet, usenet used to be a wonderful place where you could go to get help or discover useful things, today, usenet is a cesspool.

I actuall find it a blessing not getting the chat channel spammed lol i think you might find most ppl are testing the game instead wanting to have chat and personally i would be pissed if all we got was chat spam your there to test the game not socialize and gas bag about  crap lol if ya want to do that wait till game is live.

ATM people are trying out different classes and trying to get as much knowledge as possible to give them an advantage.

You might expect there to be some early guild recruitment going on but I personally wouldnt expect to be talking to many people until the headstart - except a few friends im going to play with.

I thought WAR was going to be a very antisocial game too, so far I've met alot of really cool people already. Alot of twanks too, but that's only natural.

It is the test run before launch though, people are too busy trying things out and absorbed in RVR to type things out.

Waiting for Fallen Earth, World of Darkness, Old Republic, FFXIV

The problem is with the chat box. I had a lot of problems with it.

    1) Combat log, NPC text, and Loot log are all rolled into one by default.

    2) No matter how many times I typed /1 <message> it flat out didn't work.

    3) You have to stand still/can't do anything when you type a message.

    4) It goes by the last message type you used, and for a while I couldn't speak outside of /party even though I wasn't in one.

    .... yeah those are hurdles.

It would seem kind of pointless to invest yourself in the community in beta because you have no idea if the people you are playing with will end up on your server.  Regardless of that, my guild did get a bunch of applicants from people we ran into over the weekend.   I think once the end game fills up after release, people will start getting to know each other.

i always have chat turned off, why hear a bunch of 16 year olds argue about chuck norris , or whining about the game because its not WoW. Peace and quiet is the way to go imo

  • aurickaurick Member Posts: 317

Every open beta I've ever played has had a minimum of chat with the exception of questions.  Real conversation doesn't seem to begin until launch.

The game just started.  I would think everyone would be to busy to chit-chat.

I have been on many scenarios where am I talking my butt off, and no one else on the team says anything.

I don't think they speak English.

The chat interface leaves a lot to be desired...

  • DedthomDedthom Member Posts: 541

I enjoyed the peace and quiet. People I spoke to responded but there wasn't a running dialogue I had to ignore. I don't think it makes a bad community.

I have no problems with the communtiy. Aside, from the rare moron who spams in the scenarios caling everyone idiots. I don't know if this game doesn't have the /ooc, /auction we are so used to, but I hope it doesn't. I loved that about DAoC.

/chan Order (for Order global chat)

/chan Destruction (for Destruction global chat)

  • grimbojgrimboj Member Posts: 2,102

People just wanna get on with it, whats wrong with that? OB players that havent pre-ordered have just a few days to try the game. Why spend it stood still chatting on OOC? A very narrow excuse to whine imho.
