Dissapointed: uninspiring combat, cheesy graphics effects

The combat in this game feels very uninspiring .

And those cheesy special effects, oh my. Feels like a low budget indie game. Really. Once I got caugh in a some sort of wall of bitmapped rectangles ... some type of all-powerful spell effect. Boy it was cheesy. The choice of graphical effects makes no sense,  I noticed one dude tossing a purple bottle over into another one. Turns out it was some kind of a heal-over-time thing. Made no sense. Give me some type of nice healing effect, blue or green alpha blended rays, bolts or cloud shooting out ,not a purple bottle.

The text is not sharp, it  is not  readable and the game puts out an annoying amount of blabbler that squashes any  communication that teammates might have. In fact no one talks, they just run around mindlessly. at least in WoW people try to get to a node and communicate (or blame  one another ).

I really doubt that this game will sell as many copies as AoC, at least that game had a hook: the nice graphics (and boobies of course). This one has nothing memorable to it. You just run around in a WoW clone,  possibly in the same scenario and mash the same two  buttons for hours end. The graphics are worse, the animations are worse, the combat feels shallower. I got to level 8, this corresponds to approximately level 14 in WoW and I felt that I had fewer meaningful abilities than in WoW.

It has boring quests. In all fairness  WoW type questing will feel boring to those who went through WoW a few times, it is boring even in WoW already. The one positive that I saw was the guild tools. I liked how many types of options and advancements were for guilds. Now I could suspend my disbelief and pay for the game and hope that at level 40 every problem will be fixed, but I really doubt that. In all MMOS the beginner areas are best developed and quality goes down as leveling goes up.

Most dissapointed.

Not that you don't matter, but your post is basically all the haters have going for them. Not very strong, compared to all the positives.

Don't worry, just because his concerns are the same regurgitated crap doesn't mean he's a troll!

I'm always amused when people come in and say, "Hey don't bash the guy I'm sure he just made an account today because he was playing in the PW+."

Oh, sure. You don't like the game, then magically find this site and decide to share why? Lol. He's not 100% troll because the guild system is good. But still, OP, you need to be specific if you want any credibility 'round here.

Combat gets better later on when you are rvr'ing

You don't have to do quests.

It's a MMO - take some time to explore it a bit before you judge.

First few levels feels like a typical boring MMORPG. It gets much better.   Especially if you learn to play without doing quests.

Sorry you did not enjoy this game. If you disliked the graphics, spell effects, and combat effects and liked WoW's a lot more....then go play WoW. Really, why even try to compare it to WoW. It is not WoW period. What combat is inspiring to you? if I might ask. . .gonna guess it is WoW's and WoW's spell effects are no different. If you like to play a cartoonish game with cheesy effects then WoW is right for you. Don't even see how WoW and WAR can be compared. Tired of seeing all these posts on how WoW and WAR are the same.

    Complaints:

    Bad spell effects

    Bad graphics

    Boring combat

    Boring quests

    WoW clone

    The text

You're saying it's more of the old same shit, yes? Correct. But I don't think anyone over here does have expactations that this will be an innovation. People want to enjoy the PvP aspect of the game, nothing else.

This is the best signature ever. Well, it is really up to you to decide. :x

I've never been a fan of the acid trip you get everytime you cast a spell.  I like more simplistic spell efects, and a big fan of practical effects (the bottles sound like one of these effects, but I would need to see to know).

Age of Conan is just waiting for you.  The old DAoC crowd is here and enjoys the RvR and Mythic's ability to product a FUN game.  They worked their butts off to produce a game that can support hundreds of people on the battlefield without a huge lag spike.  I for one applaud their efforts.

    Is it perfect?  No.

Is it fun?  You bet it is!

You probably saw one effect.  Congrats.  Most of the spell effects are only 'slightly' more than purple bottles being thrown around, play the game for more than 5 minutes next time.

Text is not sharp or readable?  Did you adjust it to your resolution, does your computer suck?  Filter the channels and open a group/channel tab.  Simple problems solved.  No one talks in open beta's because nobody cares, its all getting wiped away in a week or so.

I'm almost positive it has sold more copies than AOC, but I can't support that.  I'd be willing to bet my life it will, however - and it'll hold more then 50% of its player base after 2 months too.  The RVR experience is fun and balanced.  You want memories?  Go to Hawaii, get a girlfriend, have a kid, etc.  Clearly every MMO is a WOW clone.  You won't get anywhere hitting 2 buttons in WAR.  You have less abilities because unlike WOW they scale with your level, they don't get replaced.

It's got the same quests WOW, and every other MMO does, with a unique system for Public quests that reset frequently and distribute loot based on contribution.  You must have seen the entire spectrum of leveling from behind your level 8 character that you probably played for 5 minutes, got wtfpwnedbbq and came here crying that the game is bad just like 99% of the other crybaby's complaining about this game do.
    Most dissapointed.
Disasspointment's probably hard for most pre-teens to handle.  Relax, mommy and daddy will start paying attention to you soon.

    Edited because I can't spell.

It would be nice wouldn't it?  Too bad WoW brought thousands of ppl to the genre that would have been better off playing Halo or Mortal Kombat while conducting a circle jerkle.

Wait some time and WoTLK will be out, that's the game for you, very good graphics, a mature community and an advanced and funny pvp system. If you don't like the game, simply do not play it.

I can only speak for myself, but whenever I see a poster who signs up on forums and then procedes to make a single post about how awful a game is, I just have to wonder what is motivating this person.

It is obvious this the OP is/was a WOW player and finds WOW enjoyable and thus is trying to compare games to WOW.

So, if a game isnt exactly like WOW it is not allowed to be a decent game?

I havent played WAR yet but I have played AoC. Funcom developed a game with single-player quality graphics and unfortunately that is one of it's downfalls. With todays average computer systems you simply cannot have these type of very high quality graphics and still expect your MMO to run well when you get a large group of players together. WAR is looking at having 100's of players together in their RvR type PvP battles and WAR devs knew enough to realize that they needed to make their game functional instead of just pretty(like AoC).

Now, about WOW. WOW is a good entry level MMO. It has a very small learning curve and have basic quests. It is what it is....a MMO that allows people who are new to MMOs to enjoy the genre.

Does WAR look to me like a WOW clone? No. It simply looks like just another MMO in todays market. I honestly dont know why people use the phrase "WoW Clone". It makes it seem like WoW was the first MMO on the market and all other games copied WoW. That is far from the truth. Most(not all) MMOs out there seem to all use the very basic Interface which may have been developed with EQ1(not 100% certain as EQ1 may have even copied theirs). Why not just say that WOW is an EQ1 clone or EQ2 clone or maybe even a SWG clone.

    To the OP:

Next time you may want to infer that what you post is strictly your own opinion and views instead of infering that what you post is Fact.

  • ProfRedProfRed Member UncommonPosts: 3,495

Wow dude I think you need to play WoW to level 14 again.  Then make sure and stick with that character if you still have more FUN than one level 8-10 in WAR.  If you do then by all means stay with WoW and grind another character up.  Have FUN

I love how trolls come in to support the OP but actually make everyone who knows about their ridiculous troll attempts discredit the thread even more.  It's like being a politician backed by a sex offender.

The only thing that really bothers me is the chat/combat log text.  The font just... really hurts my eyes, for some reason.

I'm sure there's a way to change it, or make it bigger -- I just haven't figured it out yet.

  • grimbojgrimboj Member Posts: 2,102

aye. Not exactly a balanced review. I'm a bit of a fanboi but its hard to call a review that doesn't mention RvR for an RvR focused game - balanced.

And that last comment about beginner areas.... LOL Somebody didnt make it to Karazan *hugz*
