hey man, i hated wow as well... i would suggest trying www.knightonlineworld.com . the game is quick, any noob can play it, its fit for all lvl (raids lvl 0-49, 50-80) and so on. the pvp is very skilled but the overall aspect of the game anyone can grasp.
its f2p but you can pay monthly for extras and so on.
very good graphics
sweet skills
i used to play it but they released a new thing where you can buy a 200% +exp then you can use +70%s on top of that. so what took me and my clan a year to get to lvl 70 (80 is max...not too many people reach) now, people can get to 70 in a week.
otherwise than that, the game is awesome, pvp is good, and anti-hack is great.
There are more than just Hack and slash games out their. Most of the list on this sight are MMO games.
Try other sights as well ,Fileplanet, or Beta watchers, TONS of games are being released ever day not just Online games but Boxed games as well. By the sounds of it he/she will not like Hack and slash.
Try, FPS, or Flight Sims. Try World War 2 online. or a Fishing Rod.
Well, depends... EQ2 is a bit different than wow, more Dungeons and dragons over it.. Free trial but costs to buy and play.
Guildwars is a nice game without monthly fees to learn the MMO basic skills, well worth a try.
Or he could try go to WAR in a month, problem is that the mechanics there are quite close to wow, at least for the 8 lvls i played it...
There are some free games too but all I seen sucks hard, I really reccomend GW as a firts game, it is easy to learn, looks good and are quite fun to play. 6 months of that and hell be ready for any game

I agree its a good game, non-instance and he can run around to see all the mob... But the grind....
Saga of Ryzom maybe, or if he likes super heroes CoH can be worth a try (there is a free trail on their home page), as it is kind of noob friendly with usulay helpful players.

Runescape and Luminary are MMORPG noob friendly.
If you want to take it a step further just wait for Warhammer Online ^_^

EQII or if he doesn't care about the open world feel, try Guild Wars.
Maple story.
2d fantsy game.
It has all the main features every mmo should have.
i agree. that game should hold his/her attention for a bit... i was lvl 72 myself, a good game to dable in
including the extremely horrendous grind fest, a MMO NOOB in general, would not stay in that game past lvl 5.
if he doesnt like WoW
MMO's aint for him.

I would suggest EQ2 or LOTR....

Bollocks. I'm not a WoW-player, but I love mmorpg's.

are you a MMO noob? was WOW the first game you EVER picked up? was that a no? then your experience is void since your situation is different.
