The Starpedia in-game really is your best resource for learning the basics, Blitz. And, the entire contents of the Starpedia are available on the web at the Starport Academy -  http://armyboy.mine.nu/SGE/

But, to start a colony, you'll need to buy a bio-dome kit at one of the Starbases (Sol, Freeside, Launchpoint, Andromeda, or the Pirate base if you're a pirate.) They're $40K on the PK servers, and $760K on the Pax servers. Buy one and take it to the planet of your choice. Land and click on the biodome in your inventory. That starts the colony. Then all you need to do is get colonists from Sol or from any starport.

    (How to win at Starport)

    Don't bother:) Colonies are a newbie's game.

Instead do tradeing until you have about 10 million credits, pay 2.5 mil of it to a bounty on any old person to get 5K reputation, buy a UN starcruiser and a grav beam and full holds and shields and a neutrino scanner.

Head out and scan each system until you find a nice juicy colony. Rape it in your ubership. Kill anyone who tries to stop you. Now you have a colony:) If you are good you can take a colony without haveing to kill 95% of the turrets...But go ahead and kill them anyway so you get the easy exp.

Now that you have a colony jack the tax rate up to 20%, set it to a prison government, and set it to produce Exp. Visit it every 5 days or so and collect the money....Yea it'll have no colonists inside 2 weeks, but you'll have gotten phat exp and made millions.

Repeat ad nasum until you find a colony that can build nukes(Or are sufficently evil and rich to buy them). Pick up 8 nukes...Now it's time to PK.

Find someone with a lot of exp. Use your primary weapon until you are down to about 6000 shields. Start unloading those nukes on them.

For easy griefing exp just gank anyone and anything else you happen to come across while looking for that high exp player.

    Win:)

Unfortunately, I have to agree 100% with Xira, as he (she?) and his like have been doing this consistently to me across several servers.

You can spend many hours gathering colonists, building colonies. Hauling resources back and forth, planning for growth and colony morale... then thugs like Xira (but lets remember to call it 'role-playing') will come around and detroy it all to gain a few 1000 more xp.

Now, pretty soon, Stump, or one of the other old timers will come along to tell us that "a properly defended colony is pretty hard to invade." And that's true, but what they fail to mention is:

    • The best ships and best weapons are available to even less-dedicated players within the first two days of the game. Colonies don't have the population and resources to adequately defend themselves for at least the first week.
    • Even the experts on thes borads agree that the best-defended colony is not safe from a single dedicated invader with an hour or two on his hands.
    • Defending a colony takes so much time and resources, that it's impossible to build a defense more than 1 or 2, while it would take the accumulated XP from 4-5 well-run colonies to have a chance at winning. To win, colony XP could, at best, be a minor supplement to your killing XP

For all the thought and programming the devs have devoted to the stategy and logistics of colony-building, they've provided no chance for the colony-builder to win. No matter how well though out, carefully planned, and efficiently executed my colonies are, there's nothing about them that can't be taken away at any time by a dumbass with a big gun, which can shoot around corners and kill my turrets at no risk. Some strategy game this is.
