I.   Your  vs  you're

your = belonging to you

you're= contraction for "you are" ( and is different from "your")

These words are not interchangeable.

II.  There vs they're vs their

There = a different place from the one you currently occupy

They're= contraction for "they are"

Their= belonging to them

These words are not interchangeable.

I despise illiteracy or intellectual laziness.  Get it right before your high school English teachers slap your parents.   It takes less than one minute to proofread (you internet generation dancing monkeys might have to look that one up) a post.  I'm not talking about typos here ... I'm talking about selecting the correct word in the first place.  And, please, do not give me that "you know what I mean" crap.  You can point to your mouth and rub your stomach and I know you are hungry ...  But it's still not English.

    OP.

    I LOVE YOU.

    WTB better grammar.

    God I loathe improper english, and 'txt-speak'.

    U does not equate to 'you'.

    r is not 'are' or 'our'.

    b is not 'be'

    Does it honestly take that much effort to just try to use proper english and sound at least somewhat intelligent?

    ARGH.

    when you resort to name calling your post moves from "This is an annoyance people should avoid" to "RAAAAH ATTENTION".

    at least thats what name calling says to me, more so when its in the OP and its just a blanket statement.

    I dont care how much people hate it, I use that type of speech all the time in MMO's. It is quick, easy,  and more conenient to use. At least I, and many other people too, do not simply forget true grammer. Is it really that wrong to make things easier?, for the sake of nothing but conienience.

    It's "improper".....sorry...had to do it, considering the subject.

    Get over it.  Those that make these mistakes probably speak english as a second or third language.  I'd bet their french, german, korean... is better than yours

    I am a big supporter of proper grammar.  It makes reading things on the internet A LOT easier.

    Solude, I understand what you mean, but if the posters who don't speak english make these mistakes and they go uncorrected, how can we expect them to get better.  The same goes for any language!

    Merci beaucoup, I thought something looked off... -_-;

    And really, from the people who do advocate 'txt-speak' and the like, why do you do it? Is it really that much easier?

    I think a friend of mine said it best, "It would be difficult to declare 'English' the official language of the U.S.A. when even the legal citizens can't speak it well enough to be understood."

    Part III:  its v. it's

    its = belonging to "it"

    it's= contraction for "it is"

    And, for those of you who think this is not such a big deal ... I'd love to see your first 50-100 rejected job applications.

    While I understand your frustration.

    The majority of the people on these forums type properly at work and in real life.

    My posts normally have grammatical errors but that in no way makes me any less intelligent than a forum Grammar nut.

    I'm sure your initial post helped someone.

    In my line of work correct grammar is key, while at home i relax and just toss posts up.

    My two cents.

    Wow, I could understand you making posts in peoples threads about their spelling, but not making a complete thread dedicated to teaching english.

    Most of the people here have learnt English and proper grammar, but make a decision to be lazy.

    With the current state of the US education system, I highly doubt that...

    English is my third language.  Though I do tend to make mistakes now and again I take every effort to fix it.  I learned it properly and I'd at least expect others of the same situation to do so.  However for those living overseas in countries where English is not the first or even second language I can somewhat understand.

    Most high school English teachers I know teach English grammar badly, Skooma2.

    For example, give me the possessive forms of the following nouns:

    Woman

    Women

    Chris

    Socrates

    Fonz

    James

    Jesus

    Hobbes

    It

    Their

    Brother

    Brothers

    To date, no high school English teacher I have met can use the apostrophe correctly in all the above cases.

    Great thread! Let's not forget "should of."

    Using bad grammar is not due to laziness; it is because you are 'a few clowns short of circus.' Typos come from laziness.
