Is WAR the most hyped MMO ever?

and I don't mean the hype rating here on MMORPG.com

How does the hype surrounding this game compare to the other huge MMO releases.  Was the hype around WoW this big?  Can this game possibly live up to it?

I wonder how folks who are into PvE along with some PvP are going to dig it.  Or will there be alot of angry people screaming about a lack of content as is the case with the most recently released over-hyped MMO, 2weeks of Conan.

Not nearly as hyped as conan.  Not as hyped as WoW.  I havn't really paid much attention to other big time releases.  EVE had next to zero hype, Lineage 2 was all about 1 month of open beta with no wipe after it.

I see a ton of word of mouth on WAR, and a whole lot of interviews ect, but not as many articles as other games out there.  it seems to be a different type of hype: keeping the spotlight on by going into public to release info a lot (even if the info has already been released a dozen times) instead of flashy articles or TV ads.

that said, MMOs tend to be hyped far less than almost any other genre of game, so it may not be saying much.

but most hyped MMO ever? not by a long shot.

Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats.

You can go from 1-40 either by PvE alone or RvR alone, or both.
While I did play Age of Conan, I can't say the game didn't have a lot of content possibility. I think the main problem with AoC was that it launched way too early. Thus the reason for lack of content, broken content and consistant onslaught of bugs.
WAR has a lot of HYPE, I agree. I'm pretty certain though that it's not going to be a WoW killer, but rather a WoW competitor. WAR will probably do as well, if not better than say, LOTRO.
I'm guessing at most, WAR will achieve 1 million subscribers. Unless it truely does something unbelievable, like have a perfect launch and a crazy fun play style, than perhaps we could see 1.5 to 2 million subscribers. Will it see WoW's 9 million subscriber mark? I really don't think so, but we'll see.

Yeah, I think the real test of success is how many people keep their subs after 3 months as opposed to initial box sales, which is all based on pure hype.  Will this game have enough things to keep people excited about playing?  Will the pvp grow stale?  Will there be enough PvE content to balance out doing the same battlegrounds over and over?

yeah seriously, AoC is the game thats been thrown around so many times everywhere, hell WoW was advertised more than Warhammer from what I've seen. Warhammer has been spread mainly through forums and word of mouth on the other hand.

Anyone remember all the hype over DnL? I kept telling everyone it was bad and I kept getting flamed by forum fanbois of them saying how great it was, then it was released and soooooooooo many people bought it and got to see how bad it was for themselves.

Sad the effects forum fanboi hype has.

    The mmorpg genre is sooo shit I look at it this way;

im sure this is a winner for me..

when the battle between EQ2 and WOW whas in 2003/2004 something.. i whas never gonna play wow, i whas gonna play EQ2..

it didn't end that way.. i ended up playing wow fulltime, because i didnt really like EQ2.. so i played WOW 3 years..

The same thing happended again.. I whas gonna play AOC and not WAR.. with aoc i got a similar feeling as with EQ2 back in the days.. so maby i get a deja vu? and many years with war to come?

It's not the same hype, it's something else, like a religion. People are more mesmerized than hyped. They keep repeating the same phrases, like "WAR is going to rock" and "WAR is going to be awsome". They worship Mythic and Paul, the one that brings the good news, and the other guy, the arrogant one, the Avenging Angel.

Believe it or not, after the Vanguard burn, then the AoC burn, people STILL want something to look forward to. We MMO'rs arent a bad lot, were just tired of being disappointed by promises unfulfilled.

Impress us, and we'll give you our undying loyalty, disappoint us, and we'll be at your door with pitchforks and torches.

Yeah i cant se how ppl can still listen to the hype and spam the forums with how great war is going to be; after the aoc hype suicide you would think people would know that a few trailers a lot of adds doesnt make a good game.

one of the bigger reasons i think why its so hyped more then others is because this game has given more information then past MMO releases, we have more fire to play with :)

Main source of my hype has been leaked beta info.

This game is getting a TON of hype outside of this website.  EA is pushing this game in a big way.  Look at all the beta giveaways and events they have had already.

Now if you compared this hype to world of warcraft's hype, then i would say, on a grand scale, war has more hype simple because theres a lot more mmorpg gamers then there were 4 years ago, and gamers in general.  The gaming industry is growing bigger and more powerful each year, and also the warhammer IP is well known, along with mythic and EA.

But for this website, i think the most hype i have ever seen was the months before everquest 2 and world of warcraft were released.  Everybody was debating whether blizzard could pull off an mmo and be successful, and if they were successful, could they beat sony?

I hope it will never reach such numbers. Just want valuable game and not just another commercial crap... But for sure its possible to reach unbelievable subs number because he have great cartoon war atmosphere and have many solo play possibilities.

I think after AoC any 'hype' for a game is just silly but yeah I can't wait for the game as well... it's my type of game (providing things work )

No, but I think what's more important is where the hype's coming from. It's not from Mythic - the devs are excited about their game, that's true, but every dev should be. All Mythic is doing is telling us what's going on...the players are the one really generating the hype. If Mythic released all these shiny vids showing a polished, awesome game with incredible features, that's alot to deliver. But Mythic is showing us what's going on in-game; that's why alot of the vids are lower quality (though once NDA lifts and they have the final lighting system in, we'll start seeing alot better vids.) Low quality videos attract trolls, they don't generate hype.

So, this means Mythic has to release a solid, finished MMO. You can't have a house without a good foundation. Do I think they'll do it? Yes.

A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

Most hyped game ever is Darkfall, if you go on sheer amount of hype over time, with not much to go on in terms of actual info.

There is a big difference between the two games.

Mythic have an established reputation - funcom already had a failure to their name.

AoC did not have extensive beta stages and an open beta phase.  Plus it appears that beta players were suspicious about not having played past lvl 20 or done any sieges.  In WAR these things have been tested.

There's just something shifty about the way Funcom presented..  and the vibe I get from Mythic is one of honest enthusiasm.  Sure there is PR, but I find them more trustworthy.

Anyway, I reserve final judgement until OB..  but on what we have so far - Ill say with confidence that WAR is unlikley to be a failure.

OK lets take you on a trip around business for a 2nd.

In War actually reaches numbers around where WoW is now, what this does is creates a fight for the Top dog. When you have two companies side by side trying to get the edge, as a customer you win for the fact that they will try harder to be number 1, aka you win in the end,

Getting the game to close to WoW or taking some so its like a balance of 4 mil or 5 mil ect is what you would want the most, to compete with wow, not just be another mmo on the block.

Its when a company is on the top that makes the game get lazy.

I don't think WAR is the most hyped.  I think that the AoC and WotLK vs WAR battles seem to make it appear to be hyped to that level, but that's more fan generated than anything, imho.

I don't think this game is near as hyped as AoC was and WoW.  I mean for cryin out loud I saw WoW advertisements at theatres before movies....  and being funcom and their previous reputation, they had to hype the hell out of AoC.  The WAR hype actually comes from the player base who have viewed the blogs etc and people who are actually testing the game.

  • miagisanmiagisan Member Posts: 5,156

AOC was definitely more commercially hyped than WAR.....by far
