yep, you are only safe INSIDE a station, which is where you re-fit your ship, buy/sell stuff ect.  whenever you are flying around you are fair game.  there is "safe" space, in which NPC police enforce law, however they only punish, they don't protect, so you can still be killed anywhere in safe space.

so yeah, its about as hardcore PvP as it gets, if you are in a ship, you are fair game.

PvP is not 'forced' but you do sort of consent to it as soon as you undock.

Anyone that attacks you in Hi-Sec space (this is where the majority of players are) will result in their ship being destroyed by the eve equivelant of law enforcement within seconds.. so unless you're carrying something that is a lot more valuable than your ship is sturdy, you're pretty much safe as is takes overwhelming firepower to pull it off.

Doesnt sound like Eve is for you, though.

Yeah PVP is open but just from my experience i have never been killed by players in high sec (police enforced) space. (except when at war, which is only possible if you join a player corporation). and i've been playing for near 3 years now. spent over a year living in high sec. in my experience Its doesn't make you invulnerable but you either have to be stupid or unlucky to be killed in high sec space.

Now i live in low sec killing any players i can find, and been killed by others

There is a free trial if you to have a look.
