Take your time... leveling is way fast. Try to smellt he flowers and enjoy the first 20 - 40 levels.
By that time, hopefully things have changed.

Pretty much covers it. All the real "mature" content is being removed from the AoC gameworld, and theres no sign of new "mature" content coming in.
The rating is silly imho. PG13 at best.
Have fun with it, it is worth the box price in the same way Oblivion and games like that are - but it has little subscription value. I bet you will first love it, then around mid 20 to 30 you start to tire of it and notice all the flaws, then as you get towards 40ish it really starts to wear on you and you are left with laments of what could have been.

just take it slow. Dont rush it and dont read too much into it's gameplay. If you play it like an old fashion video game youll like it.

The sad thing is that its NOT like an old fashioned videogame (sadly). AoC holds your hand, most older games required THOUGHT and SKILL to play through. This game guides you to every single quest with convenient little Xs and arrows.
You SHOULD be able to immerse yourself in an MMORPG. You SHOULD be able to read into the gameplay. There SHOULD be depth.
As is, levels 1-20 are fine, the rest is a downhill slope that ends with a non-existant endgame and purposeless pvp.
As it is, you probably won't regret buying an account and playing through it for your first 30 days.... it is fun for it's first 40-50 levels, and with how fast the leveling pace in the game is,you'll probably get that far (even with "smelling the roses", which is probably best to do at this point).
Though by then it's questionable whether or not to resubscribe. Content is scarce at levels 60 upwards, and, while players can attack one another and PvP technically is existant, there is no PvP system of the game and offers no rewards or punishment. Though, by the time you finish the content, it is possible that at least a partial amount of the intended pvp system will be added, at least they say. Whether or not they do is questionable, though, as their promises are... complete crap, in all honesty.
take it back to walmart and pick up eve you will have more fun with a game that is done and doesn't craft every 10 minutes into play

Old fashion as in the NES and pre NES. They held your hand too in many of those games

Simply take your time and level at your own pace. As of right now there is not alot of end-game content. It will get better (hopefully) so just give it time and enjoy the ride.
- P.S make sure if you choose a pvp server that you find a great guild to work with, as there is no penatly to kill lower level people, so group up and have fun.

I have played AoC since its release, got two characters up to around 50, and experienced most of what the game had to offer (and please dont pull the "YOU DIDNT GET TO 80!" card with me, because ive read ALOT of information that people who HAVE gotten to 80 have written, and there is no magical content waiting there for me if I had stuck it out that far).
AoC since release has toned down the lewdness/nudity of its NPCs. They have added no new "mature" content. The game is not the dark, gritty, real Conan world that was promised. In fact, if changes such as the new clothing wearing worshippers of Derketo (who used to be nude) is any indication, they are trying to make their game less "real" in the sense of the lore so as to attract a wider variety of players.
Now, im not one to scream for nudity in videogames purely for the sake of nudity in videogames. Thats not what im getting at with what ive posted. What im saying is that Funcom is not delivering on their much touted M rating, that they purposefully used to attract people to the game.
They promised us the world showcased in the Conan books, and instead, we got a VERY watered down version of the Conan movies.
That being said, not delivering on the promised M rating is the LEAST of AoC's worries. The game is fine until level 20, at which point it becomes very hollow. After three weeks I actually had to convince myself I wanted to play. Games should hook you so that you WANT to log in and spend time playing, you shouldnt have to force yourself to do so. There are also many other reasons as to why the game sucks. I wont get into them. Honestly, my advice to the OP is this: Wait 6 months, then check the game out. Stick it on a shelf and wait, because in its current state, it disappoints.
I thought the game was great fun initially. So like people said take it slow explore it fully to give it time to develop. I'd say it is worth it as you can definitely get 100+ hours of good gameplay before running into issues. I played and probably had 120 hours played before I quit.

1-Your argument about level 80 taking me as a rabid fanboy was totally unnecessary.
2-NPCs that are dressed now were incomplete at the release, yes Funcom released it too soon.
3-Check the lore and quests, those are not the real Derketo Followers. One more example, in the first release days one NPC in Conall´s Valley had a breastplate but no pants...it has pants now.
4-I really like Conan lore, so trust me, Im checking it ingame everytime and Im reporting if anything is out of context... but again, what people are saying now about this Age of Conan censored is misinformation NOW, if this start to happen tomorrow, I will be there against it.
5- In the Sanctum of the Buring Souls there is a real lore mistake, you know what Im talking about, right?
6-There are quests related to rape, forced male homosexualism etc and etc... this is not a watered down version of the movies.
7-The M rating is totally there and you know it, my only concern is if the lore will keep there.
8- I play MMOs for years and my advice for everyone is , wait at least 6 months after release before start with ANY game.
