I just stumbled on this interested mmo called Blackmoon Chronicles. Apparently it was started years ago but never finished and it went under. It evidently resurfaced and is making a slow comeback. The game is basically a comic book drawn world that players and npcs live in. It's very much like Dofus except without the tiles and turn-based gameplay. The game is very pvp-centric (they don't have much information on their site at all but they have a free-trial that I'm using right now) and it's basically the Empire versus the Blackmoon. The game is very dark with plenty of gore unlike Dofus. The lore follows the story of the real comic books called "The Blackmoon Chronicles" and players undergo a city-specific storyline that takes them across the world. The endgame appears to be pvp and quests with pvp consisting of world pvp RvR where players can kill each other and capture obelisk pillars for their side. They have to obtain special staves to hit the pillars with to claim them. Once they do that, their side receives bonuses and buffs for having those pillars such as faster xp, hp regen, and mp regen. It kind of reminds me of Diablo. Anyway, the dev team is extremely community-based, often implementing features the players want and I asked that they implement sandbox features such as housing, crafting, etc. They said they plan for those things. There are very few players as the dev team has done little advertising but the storyline quests are amazing and very interactive. There was one where I was supposed to meet this guy to get some items implicating blackmoon spies but I found his door damaged and broken in so I investigated and found him dead on the floor of his bedroom and then assassins came behind me and tried to kill me. I found the item I sought after examining some bookcase.

That actually looks kinda cool
There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
Interesting; I've been an avid fan of writer Froideval and the comics for years, even got me a rare Ghorghor Bey mini (well, not like he's really that mini, lol) and desperatly searched for any kind of PnP game based on it's setting, but alas. Tho not exactly the graphics I'm used to in my games, it certainly is a very interesting aproach on artwork. Guess I'll have to try out that trial then. Thanks so much for posting.
The STYLE looks really cool, but a top-down game? Hrm... I am not sure I'd play an ISO game in 2008+, despite the fact the style looks really, really cool. But I keep an eye on it still, so thanks for bringing this up. ^^

I agree. I"m constantly trying to do something so I can look up when I play one of these, instead of looking down at my feet. I feel claustrophobic.
