First Impressions of Vanguard

mike470mike470 General CorrespondentMember Posts: 2,396

Hello all.  I recently purchased Vanguard for 20 dollars at my store, and currently I am enjoying myself greatly! Here's a small writing on my thoughts of the game so far:

Community- The community is great, I must say.  Any time I had a question, people were always there to help.  Without them I wouldn't have found my map for who knows how long!

Quests-  So far I am not far along in the game to really say, but so far they're not very interesting.  I am hoping that while I level the quests get more interesting.

Graphics-  Beautiful.  The settings are easiuly adjustable, and within ten minutes it was running EXTREMELY smoothly.

Overall-  So far I am enjoying the game.  I am currently a level 5 monk, and am beginning to get the hang of the game.  I am doing all of the quests I can find; to improve gear and make a nice profit. The only problem is i'm rather lonely, as it seems I am a quiet part of the game Here are some screens of my journey thus far.

    Glad you are enjoying yourself m8.

    I see from your screenies you are on Kojan. Kojan can be a lonely place, the least populated of the starter areas, which is a shame. It's a beautiful part of the game world and I always loved the intro quests for the Far eastern looking humans and half elves.  If you feel like a change of area grab a rift to the other main land masses. To find which rift is nearest make the macro below.

    Right click an empty slot on the hotbar. type this below.(I'm sure this is the command. ask in chat if you have problems)

    /togglewindow Vanguard Riftway system

    This will bring up the riftway system map. It only costs 25 copper to use the low level rifts. Travel to the nearest one and port to one of the other main lands. Groups will most likely still be thin on the ground, but this is down to the low level population being scattered around all the starter areas., but you should see more people running about, OOC chat is busier etc.  Once you hit the mid teens to the low twenties people merge to the most popular quests lines like Hunters League and CIS in Qalia and grouping starts to be more common place.

    "The community is great"  lol thats because there is 4 servers.  You have no choice but to get along or play by yourself.   I played VG since release for 3 months. I have played VG 3 times on seperate occasions since release.  Good luck.

    A game could have 100's of servers, or like you stated only 4 servers. Most people will most likely be playing only on one server, oblivous to the other servers around them. So IMO it does not matter how many servers a game has.  The most important issue is are you enjoying your time on the server you have selected. One of the important aspects for me in a MMO is a good community.  I will take 4 servers over 100's if it means I am playing with a great community.

    Peace

    Edit: Sorry mike470, did not mean to hijack your thread.

    And there you have the reason why I quit my recent foray into V:SoH.

    *  Large Empty World

    *  Static, lifeless NPCs

    *  Boring Quest Lines

    *  Few other players

    Oh well.

    Glad you are enjoying it.  Yes, there is no better game community as far as I'm concerned.  I think the depth, complexity and challenge of Vanguard attracts more vetern MMO'ers and as such, we end up with a very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful community.

    The quests get better and down-right addicting as you level.  At lower levels, the quests are more straight-forward and work at setting up the lore of the area that you are in.  At mid to higher levels, the quests become more interesting, lenghty and offer better rewards.  The are also 'hidden' quest lines that you only find through dialogue and following the text closely.  Often over-looked because folks get used to their quest journal and follow way-points etc.

    Kojan is rather large and spreadout and most people leave that continent around level 15-20 to go to either Qailia or Thestra.  When you get to the 20 quest areas and beyond is very easy to pick up groups.

    Sorry to bother you all, but I am stuck on a quest and it's driving me crazy

    I am currently doing the monk quest which makes you pick from positive or negative jin.  I picked psitive and then walked away for like 20 seconds, and then I realized something was supposed to happen.  I have been standing there for around5 minutes, and still nothing is happening.  Do I just abandone it and start over, or do I just not finish the quest?

    Thank you

    Mike,

    Just abandon the quest and take it again.  When you go up and choose, give it a bit of time.  It goes through a summoning process, then an NPC will appear.  When I did it, the summoning went on for about 30 seconds.

    Hope that helps!

    There is no such thing as a WoW clone, WoW was not the first MMO nor will it be the last.  But VG is certainly not even close to a WoW clone.

    1) do the graphics look cartoony? (do you see a orc running around with a huge glowing axe?)

    *since your are basing it on the screen shots*

    P.S. btw the gui may look like it has the same uses as WoW, how does that make it a WoW clone? Why cant every MMO use WoW's Gui since its soo easy to use?

    Man that game is soooo UGLY!

    I think it actually beats EQ2 in worst graphics ever.

    It would probably help if I noted thatmy settings were on "balanced" and medium.

    I seriously don't gte how so many people bash these graphics.  A lot of WoW fanbois apparently hate this game for some unknown reason...?

    Ohh, after looking through your recent posts, you're not a WoW fanboy...you're a graphics whore.  Which doesn't make sense cause VG's graohics are pretty damn good..

    Also, half of your posts are actually bashing graphics...it's clear that you like graphics>gameplay.

    Yeppers, you're a graphics whore..

    rofl. What a specialist.

    wow clone with real craft diplomacy housing lot of races/classes corpse run etc etc etc ?

    Wow clone or... maybe Everquest Like ?

    Yeah that's it

    VG is an EQ like.

    Wow is a copy of EQ. EQ for newbies. For beginners if you prefer.

    You start with wow, then you play Lotro, after that, you can start big MMOS : DAOC, Eve, VG etc. (UO AO ...)

    To the OP/ : Kojan is really great but ...empty. May I suggest you to "take a rift  " > Thestra Tursh OR Qualia Khal.

I am in the Safe Haven guild if you are looking for a large guild with a mature community. I am around lvl 11 at the time of this posting. Below is a link to the website of the guild I am in.

    I've started two chars, a Necro Doggy chick and a Wood Elf Druid. I like the Druid a little better, so far. One thing I've noticed is that the char models are not as nice as some other games, EQ2, LOTRO, et al. Little disappointed in that, however, some of the NPC's look great.  The environment  also looks very good. Game play is very nice and I'm having a  good time playing. Leveling is definitely slower than many of the more recent games, WoW, etc.  I actually feel like coming back and playing. This has a very similar feel to me that EQ gave me, slow leveling, similar spells. The one knock I have is the population, granted, I'm in the starting zone, but I see no one around, kind of  makes you feel like your playing a single player game. Hopefully, this will change as I level up.
