What is a good PCI-Express Video Card?

grable548grable548 Member Posts: 34

I just got a new computer and it has a pci-express slot for graphics cards not the AGP 8x.  It came with a x300 SE which is not good enough for a game like EQ2 and I was wondering if anybody knows what the best thing to get right now for the pci-express slot is.  I have been looking at the Nvidia PCX 5900 card because its pretty cheap.  Is that one very good compared to what else is out right now and would it be good enough to run EQ2 with all the graphics turned up?

Here are Links to three different 5900s:

There is currently no graphics card that can run EQ2 with full detail. 5900 would run EQ2 pretty well without lag. But make no mistake, the pci-e 5900 is no faster than the agp x8 5900. I would buy from newegg(best online service) and either asus or chaintech are good companies.

Pce is faster thats why its replacing agp

If you buy a pci system that is the same as close as you can get to being the same specs(x800pcix-x800agp) as an agp system right now you will see a 1% increase on the pci to the agp. Not worth it. I'm waiting until the idea really takes off.

I do always say taste the rainbow but i always sift through my bag o' skittles to get to the white ones.

Actually, its not replacing AGP not because of speed but because of engineering design. In theory, its 2 times faster, but gfx haven't even used the bandwidth of a agp 8 card- with the most bandwidth demanding cards(6800, x800)- its only 1 to 2 percent faster.

According to SoE ,no system yet can run EQ2 in full setting.

Some short interview when the 6800ultra and X800xt came out with a developer asked if it possible to use this cards with the most powerful cpu avaliable to run EQ2 on full setting comfortably.

    Answer was NO.

yes thats correct, the PCI-Express is twice as fast as AGP. the only problem as stated, is that the technology is so new for PC's that no one has made anything for it.

also can someone tell me it this is right because as far as i know i am. the AMD 64bit proc IS the fastest proc out there, the only problem is that nothign uses 64 bit. except linux, when i say nothing i mean like games and stuff like that. as far as i am aware the 64bit proc will do nothing compared to a pentium 4 3.6Ghz with Hyper-Threading. is that right?

Its twice the bandwidth which does not equal twice the speed. Even when technology catches up- its still might not even be the difference betweem agp 4 and agp 8. Currently, its a waste of money.

The AMD64 currently the fastest at the 32-bit apps and can run all the new 64 bit apps a year from now. Linux, unreal tournament 2004, windows xp 64, and most upcoming OSs and games are going to be in 64 bit. The amd64 3400+, 3500+ will kill the 3.6ghz P4 in most game tests- amd64 is currently the best gamer cpu out there. P4 really doesnt have a advandge anymore( future, money, performance). Hyper-threading is also overrated- i would take amds hyper-transport(currently faster with a agp 8 card then a p4 with pci-e) over it anyday.
