I got bored with it and cancelled my account today.  I don't really care for linear on-rails PC games that are really meant to be played on the console.  I'm with the people that say the game kinda sucks.

Sorry, but first post. Might want to register for places before 2008 to be taken seriously. Not being elitist, just  real.

This is just as I expected.. A big giant ball of conflict.. Fanbois vs Realist vs Haters.. Its Vanguard all over again. And now people can see what the so called "Vanbois" had to go through for so long.. But these arguments are fruitless.. We have our own opinions and instead of trying to push ours onto everyone else why not just listen and accept and walk away?

KNEW this would happen.. lol.. I havent wasted any money on AoC yet, but I will be reading all these "debate" threads and coming up with a decision if I should try it or not.. So far its leaning towards NO.. Limited Zones much like EQ 2 ruin the immersion for me, and while I can deal with the idea of zones I find imaginary borders to be a tad primitive. Eq 2 had zones yet didn't really have imaginary boundaries, every zone was built sorta like a sphere or had a physical boundary.

Linear mmo's are a turn off also, but I am going to need more information for this to stick.. How's the world size? Populations? Customization? And any kind of immersive features that make this game stand out?

to all the people who complain the game is linear: Why is it gamebreaking that u cant spend a lot of time on wandering around/exploring doing absolutely nothing useful?? dont u all get bored fast enough with just walking around looking at the gameworld that u want to quest or lvl and thats where linear worlds speed things up for you... no more walking in the middle of nowhere having to run endlessy to some mission or city

    Hmm....

Its ridiculous, do you think if a person would steal another review he would chose something more elaborate? Did it ever come to your mind that it may be the SAME person?

What's wrong with you guys? Some seem to have a hobby trying to discredit people at random, checking every stupid post and threads to slander them. Poor, very poor. Either confront what a person SAYS or STFU. We dont need Blockwarts to play private policemen, thank you very much.

And do you know this for a fact?  NO. gets your facts straight before you start bashing other people on here k bud?  The OP never stated this was a thread of his posted from another forum, therefor it could very well be credit being taken from someone elses review.  Close thread please.

Or mediocre :p  But that's just being bitter.  AoC is not medicore, it's a fucking good game - it's just heavily instanced and very linear - which some people just ignore and don't care and enjoy things, if they can encapuslate themselves in this world, fair play to them.  To others, like myself, knowing that you have no real choice in your 'destiny', and that players can teleport between 'realities' (and in fact, this is necessary for grouping), or to hide from PvP, is a deal breaker, and people should be informed.

Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

As for the questing, I don't see a problem with them telling you where to go.  I hate having to go search on the internet for the right cords, that's a real errand (or spending x8 times longer on a quest because you couldn't find the spawnsite).  Best questing I've seen imo.

whatver anyone says, too me it just doesnt feel like an mmo - more like a straight up rpg

instanced dungeons is one thing, but instanced zones just isnt what an mmorpg should be about

I agree.. I think it splits the population too much.. ESPECIALLY if the max amount is only 48 for ONE instance.. wtf? Only 48 people at a time in any given zone at a time? So again that means trying to find the right instance with all your friends and somehow making it all work within the 48 restriction..

Good review, I agree with the part of guildwars on steroids. I was a *hardcore* gw player for almost 3 years. Loved every minute of it. GW has a very linear story line(mostly because it was never realy made as a hardcore pve game) it had great graphics for its time etc etc but again it is a very simple play style well suited for people that can take 1-2 hours out of the day and play and feel like they got somewhere.

AoC I think is a lot how GW2 will be. A bit more open but still smaller zones figureatively. For me I love this, I think the benifits of having to zone every once in a while far outweigh having the open world aspect. In an MMO if you want stunning gfx like AoC has you can not have a huge open world. The tech for it just does not exist.  So I agree might be to closed off for your tastes but looking at the success of GuildWars it fits a lot of peoples style as well.

The quest arrows well personaly I love them, one reason I quit wow after 14 days, I did not have the time or patience to run around trying to find something. It has me pulling my hair out and I have no fun with it. Even AoC with its arrows have had me pulling hair trying to find something. I never liked having to downlaod and install mods or look up a quest on a website before I went. Thats to much downtime for me, to much nonsence work.  Rather than take the arrows out how about include an option to turn it off or on, that way both you and I can have what we want. This is an adult oriented game probably made with Joe Homeowner in mind, he has work, kids, wife, bills. he can't spent every waking moment on this game

    My 2 cents anyway....

Exactly, but in a RPG, you don't pay a monthly fee.   Personally, i bought the game, i was like WOW when i first start playing it.  Right now it's not even 5 days later i'm already bored of it.    It's linear, leveling is a clone of WOW, even the talent tree (feats) is the same, loot is utterly boring and un-imaginative and i heard past a certain level 40 or 50, quests are almost nil, you are left to grind.   They wont see my $$ past the free month.

im not talking about all the instances, so still... whats wrong with linear games? its linear cause u dont need to use the whole world to get ppl from A to B. i dont know whats nice about games where u can go everywhere cause u arent doing anything useful when walking to some scenery where theres nothing to do, u just stand there.. looking at some pixels.. not getting any xp or pvp action etc etc

altho about the instances.. i think its ridiculous to have instances of cities where ppl usually meet in large numbers :S or thats just a stupid decision or the game cant handle it, and thats worrying

Hmm... its not much worse then EQ2. For example Hellsand is an instance but  its a complete island. Not big but complete. And of course the tomb on the island is an instance too. I wouldnt call that imagenary boundaries. Also the wine cellar of Mitra is an instance and within is the entrance to the prison of the castle. Its not lacking logic just because there are loading screens at the doors.

Me personally thinks the game is not linear enough in Tortage. For a starter zone i think the destiny quests should be enough to level up to 20. I think a bit holding players hand doenst hurt in a starter zone. Just my personal taste tho...

Outstanding... character gaphics are outstanding. The mature theme is a bit of fresh air. Nothing special, but still something new when Tina calls the bad boys assassin a son of a *bleep*. This is sort of a new immersion. From what i have seen so far the soloable dungeons do have stratecic aspects and need a bit of planning your path. Loved to go to the Slavemaster in the vulcano.

The game has flaws. Some serious flaws even. Especially the auto-move in combat is a bad joke and i hope the xbox version flops badly It has also bugs. Some features are just smoke and fog. But the game seems to be a unpolished gem. Combat with combos is good, but its unpolished. Doesnt leave combat mode always, doesnt refresh weaponchange always. Combat lag... especially after combat. "ouchies" are still comming in, although the mob lies wasted on the ground. Minor glitches, nothing that cant become better very soon. Its nowhere near the "unfinished" state of vanguard.

Man, i was just thinking the same thing. What`s the point in having a nice view when that`s all it is, a nice view.

VG beats AOC for draw distance and views hands down.

Was just about to comment but agreeing with the above theres no need.

Very very pretty graphics not a lot of substance, lazy raid endgame so not worth investing time in sadly. I plan on slowly leveling my char to 80 so i guess i'll run down the free 30 days i have.

I think AoC would have made a nice single player RPG. I find myself just playing solo and only teaming up occassionally with someone to take out a "boss" (thought the meaning of the word boss seriously has changed since last i played an MMO). I want to see where my destiny quest goes and i want to know what happens at the end. I hope i reach that before my 30 days are over.

If you don't subscribe and just consider this a single player game for 30 days, i think the value for money is ok. Of course you can't take the game out in a few years and play it again for 30 days, but not much you can do about that.

So has anyone found out exactly how many people can be in an instance yet, or are we still guessing? Also has anyone been to the high level instances yet and found out if the Border Kingdoms one is finished (for castles and scheduled PvP siege instances)?

Word on the official forum is that the max is 50 per instance. Nobody has tried to refute that in the official forums yet.

If the max is indeed more than 50, I imagine people on the official forums would jump all over it instantly and shoot it down. So I'm guessing it could be true.

It is also interesting to note that prior to the release of the game, people were swearing left and right that the game "opens up" after lvl20 and there is MINIMAL instancing.

Now most of them are saying "I am grateful for instances! Crowd control is one of the things Funcom has done right."

Wish these people could make up their mind.

People seem to be reading linear in its' literal sense of 'go in one direction' sort of like Conall's Valley is (regardless of people arguing that you can climb the walls).

For me linear is  'Run over there and Kill XYZ mob'. Done. Run back and talk to quest giver. Oh thank you for killing XYZ. Now can you go kill 123 mob'...which ends up being in the same 1 square mile radius as XYZ, or at best, the next block over. The bulk of the difficulty in quests is having some elites thrown into the mix near the normals. In no game without UBER gear (I hate the word) should a player be able to hold off and beat 7 or 8 mobs 2 levels above the players level (and yes, I mean without exploits..toe to toe slugging it out).

Today I got a hat. Yes a hat. The stats were slightly less than the one I was wearing from an  end of quest reward, but I wore it anyways. Why? It had horns. I was different. I look 'outside the mold' from 85% of the other players.

Then too, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised but generally I am when I am gratuitously insulted for no reason. When i was in Tortage I was helping people, answering questions and giving small quest hints when people asked. Then someone brought up the subject of the game as a whole and who liked it. I didn't say I hated it, just that it wasn't my favorite and that i wouldn't sub when my month was up. Wow! The insults started flying. People telling me I was $#^&^!! for leaving because of BUGS (I told them several times i I wasn't leaving because of bugs but because of game play) and to get the sand out of my (female anatomy begins with V) and what kind a F*&*ing A****le was I ...damn. (Actually several people also stood up for me and mentioned that I was entitled to my opinions and that people obviously weren't reading as I had stated my reason for leaving did not include bugs< kudos to them). Shock and Awe, folks. Shock and Awe. It still amazes me that people will actually take the time to spell out vulgarities and post them in forums and chat. It serve to sway people to your way of thinking. Most people will either skip past it and 'avoid making eye contact' or just plain ignore just a textual addition. *shrug* I guess it's the way of the world, these days. Somehow though it's a bit disappointing.

Anyways, that left a bad taste in my mouth, so that's why I am here posting.
