MMOrpG with a good implementation of tradeskills/manufacturing?

Title says it all, but just in case;
Has anyone ever played a game where it was actually fun to play a tradeskiller/manufacturer? What game was it? How was it done?

Horizons probably has the best Trade Skill system but um... the rest of the game blows. EQ2 is promising to have a very fun and unique way to accomplish Trade Skills but none is actually known.

A tale in the desert has by far the most detailed tradeskill system out there.

The first part of the story is just finishing and the second version is in beta so can try for free.

I'm quite liking the trade content in Eve and it looks promising but I have only really brushed the surface.

X2-Online will have excellent trade content but there is no bloody release date yet.

The only other one that was any good was Earth & Beyond but was only if you were a manufacterer. The actual trade runs you could do in-game were woeful.

Well while newer mmorpg have been lacking in content, gameplay, quest and dungeons  you are in luck.

Tradeskills wise the mmorpg has for sure gotten better.

2 mmorpg stand out in my view above all the rest.

    SWG and horizons.

Now Star wars galaxies(SWG) is probably the most profitable of the 2.The turn over is high so your vendors never seems to lack buisness espically if you pick a high turnover market.Chefs, weaponsmith and armoursmith are probably the ones with the most buisness. However, other trade skills do get a lot of buisness too.

SWG is also  has a very busy market so this ensures you can also get hold of resources pretty easily. Also tradeskills is very easy to master and the harvesting of resources is automated. You drop a harvestor come back in a few days and you have all the resources you need.So no boring repeatative running around hitting that rock to get the resources.

Horizons lacks the simplicity of mastering skills of SWG and the market is much smaller(low turnover and low number of ppl in the game compared to SWG).

However, i think horizons crafting is more intresting because its more realistic. You don't just go to the local artitect buy a house and slap it is magically there. Also its more complex.

So if you want a tradeskills game with lots of interaction go SWG.Want a more complex tradeskills go horizons.

Other mmorpg with good tradeskills are UO- however i think SWG and horizons have taken the once champion of crafting title away from it .Tales in the desert- never played it but i hear its mostly crafting.

I would not even class eve online in the league of this mentioned game because its trading is tedious and boring but thats my view.

All the mentioned games have free trials so go try them out and pick one.

IMO the tradeskills system in EVE could have been nice, but it's not atm. It's no fun playing a tradeskiller (and it takes no effort, which I believe is the reason why the tl1 market sucks). And as for tl2 they are controlling it too much...

Guess I'll have a look at SWG after all then ;)

I personally like the crafting in Ryzom. It's the only way to get good items in the game, so you dont have people camping spawns or going after named monsters or anything like that.

SWG is a good choice for crafting.

First you got a big market due to the high number of players.Second many are grinding jedi so have little time to concentrate on crafting thus more buisness for you.

Thirdly,it has such a wide range of crafting skills- from the bio engineer, doctor, chef, amroursmith, weaponsmith etc.

I would recommedn you don't go weaponsmith because it is by far the most practised crafting profession. There is too much competition .Go for chef because food is consumed fast and the market is very fast.If you are bored with chef you could try doctor-craft your own medicine and buff people(always a high demand for buffs).Bio engineer is one i have to say i enjoyed most.It is good fun.

SWG is a good crafting game sadly it lacks the rest things of a mmorpg.

Ryzom has the best crafting IMO. The entire game depends on crafters. You can do anything well without crafters. The best part is that you don't become "just a crafter". You can be some big bad tank with huge sword of death... that you made, not some soot covered blacksmith. And it's not annoying like crafting in EQ1 or EQ2 is.

I agree 100% with hercules.  His repsonse to this post is right on target.

Having played both Horizons and Star Wars Galaxies, I can say that the tradeskills and such are both fun, but I would go with SWG just because of the high turnover and player base.  (Horizons may not be around for much longer due to monitary issues for Artifact Entertainment).

Star Wars Galaxies is the game to go with, if what you're in search of is crafting. If you're looking for in depth content I would stay away from SWG. Of all the games I played SWG seemed to have the best Crafting system that I enjoyed. You usually have to grind to master though to get to the highly sought after items. Other than that though SWG has a great Crafting system and a great economy.

In my opinion, Rubies of Eventide is a pretty solid game for a pure crafter. It doesn't have quite the complexity of Horizons or SWG, however, it still is fun and profitable (in game anyways) to do. There's classes for each tradeskill (armorsmithing, blacksmithing, tailoring, fletching which falls under the ranged classes), and one that's for ALL the tradeskills (Artificer). The skills do raise on their own, however, the class themselves get reductions for the costs of putting your DP, or Development Points, into the tradeskills as you raise. While it's true that a lot of the stuff you make can be found elsewhere, at least the basic stuff, there's a LOT you can make that can't be found anywhere else, provided you find the materials for it. Many people in these forums have heard me rave about Rubies of Eventide but it truely is a wonderful game which deserves to have the spotlight. It's free to play, but a $50 donation will get your account to "Gentry" status which allows 2 extra characters, and 3 magic items. A Sabre, a Cape, and a ring, and the ring grants you access to the founder's isle where most of the components for the tradeskills can be bought, and for a cheaper price than anywhere else. www.eventide.net is the link, and I truely hope you all join it!

The best tradeskills system I've seen in an MMO is Ashen Empires I think. They have more then enough tradeskills to keep you going, and you can go thru the whole game I think without ever killing a single monster if thats your style. Its set up so that everything you do gains you exp in skills, but that exp also contributes to the total exp pool you have that counts as your lvl. You could be a lvl 100 farmer if you really wanted to :)

If you really want a game that is all about manufacturing / tradeskilling, i would definatly check out A tale in the desert 2. That game has noe real combat, but you can farm, mine, and do lots and lots of other stuff to make iitme...if i wasn't so friggen tired right now...i would have something more coherent..but yeah...its kinda like Harvest moon from what i understand.
