Beauty and brutality

InzraInzra Member Posts: 679

One of the things that made me hesitate when I frist heard about AoC, way back, was that this might be a but on the violent, brutal and bloody side for me to play.

I'm not really a the type that enjoy blood and harsh combat, but I would like to say that to me the game offers much more than that.

You don't have to be some ugly guy that prefer stomping on peoples heads to enjoy playing this game, you can be whatever you want. The avatar customisation is so rich, so the visually you have all kinds of choices.

Also the quests give you different way of responding, though I'm not sure if they have different end results, haven't really explored that yet. In many way's the quests in the beginning remind of playing an Adventure game, I reckon Funcom took their experience from The Longest Journey and Dreamfall.

To level up you will have to do some killings, but I don't see many MMO's that don't have that. Also there is an option to toggle of fatalities, blood and such.

So even if you think Conan is a bit on the macho side, and brutality and violence isn't quite your cup of tea, this game might still have something to offer you.

As for myself I'm enjoying exploring the game, I haven't tried to hardcore level my way up to 80, to me that would be somewhat wasting a great game experience.

I hope alot will discover the beauty of AoC even in all it's "ugliness" :)

Nice post. I don't think some realise that ugliness can have it's own beauty and grandeur. There is beauty of the conventional and terrible kind n thr game, which adds to the richness of the gameworld. It does well in conveying Howard's creation in all it's barbaric beauty.

I am a girly girl. I love my mushy movies and my trashy romance novels (not just because I write them!) and feeling feminine is always a priority for me. So, the violence and blood splatters, etc. gave me a moments pause as well.

Funcom did an amazing job though. My character looks like a woman and plays like a woman with subtle little details like the way she holds her arms as she casts and the way she holds her body when she moves. I was impressed instantly. Add to the mix all the different ways you can advance your story and it's just about perfect.

I don't like that I can see bits of flesh fall from my husbands weapon after we beat a mob- it makes me a little squeamish, but I just look elsewhere and it's no big deal. It's part of the game, part of the lore and part of what makes this game what it is.

All in all, it's been a wonderful experience so far. Like you, OP, I hope that others can stop and see beyond the brutality and machismo to the beauty.

There are some settings to turn blood/gore off I think, so you may want to turn them off if you don't like it.

I'm not sure exactly how much it turns off, but the option is there to try.

Fantastic, I have been trying to get my wife away from WoW for awhile. I will have her read this thread when she gets home from work.

And yes, I agree. The game does a good job makeing male and female roles/characters look different. Like having the female start in the "back of the ship" concubine style, while the men are rowing. Subtle things like that.

Perhaps subtle was not the right adjective. How about "blantant"?

    LOL

Revark, I hope she reads the post! I loved World of Warcraft....so much that I created and ran my own guild. I was convinced that no other game could ever/would ever replace it.

    I was wrong!

Age of Conan is a game that my husband and I both can play and enjoy. From what I hear it's only going to get better for those who play as couples in real life or in game, but shh...didn't hear that from me.

Oh and if she does decide to give it a try, let me know. My husband and I are always looking for other couples who play together and the guild should be ready to go this week!

Beauty dont make a good MMO and I think AoC has proven that.  Eye candy can only get you so far and in my case, not very far at all.

That is great. me and my wife love playing with other couples. It feels "right". Best thing I did was introduce her to MMOs. Thank you FFXI.

What server did you guys choose. I am on THog and Cimmeria. Just wondering.

Oh sheesh! I meant to include the server name but forgot. I'm not usually this forgetful, but it's early still!

We're on the Wiccana server actually. If you choose to roll a character there at some point, feel free to look me up. My main character is Nulana.

Hopefully she'll play and we can join up! Thanks for responding :)
