Don't try the trial

VrikaVrika Member LegendaryPosts: 7,983
I had to write this after the horrible experience I had trying to get to play DDO trial.

Their website (trial.ddo.com) worked well, I got the trial key to the e-mail address I provided, the trial links, and had no problems.

I had to register to fileplanet.com, wait in their download que for half an hour, and then the download speed was only 1 mbps on my 8 mbps connection. But since I hadn't paid Turbine/Codemasters anything for the download, I could tolerate that and started downloading.

Tria.ddo.com clearly stated that the download size would be 1.7GB, yet the size of actual file I was directed to download from fileplanet.com was 3.5GB. Together with slow download speed and waiting in que, it meant around 12 hours of download time. But I wanted to test the game so I let my computer download through the night and got it done.

Then, after registering to Fileplanet, waiting on their que, having to download at slow speed, and having to download more than twice the amount of data than what was stated at trial.ddo.com, the f****** .zip file didn't work, it just stated something about end of the achieve error. While Opera (wich I used to do my download) told that the download was finished succesfully.

I ended up wasting a lot of my valuable time, and got nothing in return. Screw this game, they clearly don't want me to subcribe, otherwise they wouldn't be treating me like this.

Or you could not use fileplanet, and download the high rez package directly from Turbine...

Just so that I have this straight.  No one should try the trial because it took you a long time to download a file that then ended up to be corrupt?  As far as wasting time goes, Did you sit in front of the computer and just watch the progress bar for the download?  I mean seriously, your being a bit over dramatic.  If you have a 8mbit connection and the download was using 1mbit seems like you would have plenty of bandwidth to download other files at the same time or play a game and such.  I fail to see how you wasted a large amount of time.

    -Currently looking forward to FFXIV

-Currently playing EvE and Global Agenda

BTW, just tested the high rez installer from my link...300kbps

  • VrikaVrika Member LegendaryPosts: 7,983
Vincenz: No, I couldn't download from there. Since I live in Europe, and I have to download the European version, and the only place where I can download it (at least according to trial.ddo.com) is Fileplanet.

Rollotomasi: I didn't really mean it like that. I just wanted to warn others that the trial doesn't seem to be working as it's supposed to and that they might end up just wasting their time.

And no, I didn't sit in front of my computer for the whole time. But I still had to visit trial.ddo.com, register at fileplanet.com, make sure that I started the download after I had finished queing for the file, and make sure that I was able to keep the computer turned on and online for the duration of the download. It's still work and it takes some time, and since the download they provided didn't work I feel screwed.

I had a similar error, so I just downloaded the High Rez client to see if that download would be error free.

    It was.

Really it is no big deal, I understand being frustrated but if you download and do something else it is easy enough to work around. I mean it is a free trial, and you are downloading a pretty intricate program over the internet. Sometimes we take things for granted you know? No offense I am not judging you.

You ever hear the old saying that goes something like...

"I used to complain about not having any shoes, that was until I met a man with no feet".

    Think about it.

I downloaded the trial and tried to play it but couldn't. Not once but TWICE.

I mean, I literally could not play the game. Nearly every time I got a loading screen it would not load. My entire trial period was making characters on servers and talking to tech support to see what the problem was.

In the 2 times that I did the trial my gameplay experience amounted to running the tutorial dungeon about 5 times.

I've played almost every retail, open beta and free trial MMO there is and never had a problem similar to this with any of those.

I also downloaded the european trial a few weeks from fileplanet.

    Heres my horrorstory...

The file downloaded in around 6 hours IN MY SLEEP! how dare they do this?! I was sleeping, and they dared deliver a file to my computer?!

When i tried to unzip and install the software, wait for this, IT WORKED FIRST TIME! The cheek!

Then they had the audacity to have improved the game vastly since Beta, so much so I REALLY ENJOYED IT!

I was so incensed at this ruthless disregard for my 'drama queen' personality, I was forced to ultimately buy a RETAIL COPY!

    The Bastards!

I now sadly find myself playing the game constantly with only small breaks to post on websites ridiculing people who really need SOMETHING BETTER TO WHINE ABOUT.

    Toodles!

ok, what I get from this thread so far is:

I wasted valuable time downloading while I slept through the night.

    Fileplanet sucks.

There needs to be a better digital distribution alternative for Europeans.

    Codemaster sucks.

A bad computer is Turbines falt.

My connection speed to download from a third party site didn't match what my ISP advertises and Turbine is to blame.

The game is too complicated and every time I played I had to spend my entire 10day trial period running a quest that I didn't know I could skip (by speaking to the NPC near the door) if I didn't want to spend the 3 minutes it takes to complete it.  .

    Did I miss anything?

I'm sorry people, but some of the complaints in this thread are ridiculous.  My goodness, they're even worse then the crying over Trip not working on uber elite rare raid bosses!

the 1.5gb client is the low resolution version.  I believe Turbine has switched to the high res 3.5gb version by default.

To the OP, you're not the first person who's complained about dealing with Codemaster's poor service of delivering their products.  From what I gather they are worse then Atari, if you can imagine that.

I've downloaded the client a few times and have NEVER had any issues.  Each time was for different reason but I NEVER had a problem.  I also sourced my download directly through the DDO.com site and NOT the Codemaster European site.

  • VrikaVrika Member LegendaryPosts: 7,983
I decided to dowload the .zip file again, and it still didn't work on Win XP SP2 default unzip program, nor on Iceows packaking program.

But miraculously it worked using Winrar program. And I don't think that there is any problem with my computer's software, since every other .zip file I have works without any problems on any of those programs.

So I don't know what's wrong, but gratz on Turbine/Codemasters for not being able to pack the European English trial client so that unzipping it would work without problems. And not being even able to tell on their website the download size even remotely correctly, that 3.5GB high res client download is the only one I'm offered and the download link clearly states the download size to be 1.7GB.

But at least I finally got it to work, just why did it have to be this hard?

  • VincenzVincenz Member Posts: 1,498

Well, I really have to question the blaming of Turbine or CM on this.  Either the package is corrupt or it's not, since clearly it wasn't...it sounds like a user issue that you couldn't get it to properly install using the other programs.

  • SevenwindSevenwind Member UncommonPosts: 2,188

I couldn't for the life of me find it but I know I read it somewhere on Fileplanet that the .zip files they use must be opened with like winzip. The built in .zip crap in XP and Vista will not work or will give you problems.

Yes like you I got it to open just fine using winrar, but it also opened just fine with winzip. I did not try using windows zip junk. I think I was downloading the Lineage 2 client to try the trial. It was a big file.

Not certain but I thought non-paying members to fileplanet get a capped speed? Could be why it was slow.

downloaded it very recently and it worked for me there isnt anyone using their cd/dvd playing this game as it would be horrible outdated so all playing this game is using what didnt work for you.

its extremly hard to find and download the trial game and yes it takes forever. fileplanet is one of the most confusing pop up infested hell hole of a site as i have ever seen *shudders*

you can install the game as high res or low res if i rember correctly i just pressed ok ok ok like mad. did the info say the installed client size were 1,7/3,5 ? or did it say installer packet size were 1,7 or 3,5? but suspose you could be right and it had outdated size info.

its onw of the better mmos ive played but the european version has a horrible trial download system far worse then most free to play games in my opinion, but it does work only lot of work and slow.

my advice to you would be not to use "opera" never tried this myself and i didnt have any issues getting the file (working order) from fileplanet. hope your luck turns and you either get it to work or find somting as fun that you can play. or download the american version gona be tricky paying to play this but to trial version is directly from turbine and good speed.

When downloading from fileplanet, use their downloader or else you will get "corrupted file" message...

Actually the easiest solution to the whole problem:

    AVOID FILEPLANET.

I don't care if you can ONLY download it from FP- avoid it. FP sucks.

I hope no one actually follows this advice, the game is great, and worth the download.  Try it out and you will be impressed.  This game has the best combat engine i've ever played on.

For all of you bashing the OP, you know he has a point. I recently had a hell of a time with the EQ2 trial, similar experience, resulting in the same disgust.

There is no reason why people should go through a third party like FilePlanet to get a free trial from a pay-to-play game, I would have looked at that and crossed out the game on the spot. He persisted despite this, and had to endure a 12 hour DL time. That's 12 hours of leaving the PC on, and not being able to do much else very quickly or efficiently. God help you if you have something like Vonage.  No, I don't sleep for twelve hours a day. Then you have the patches which are going to take even more time.

For a game you aren't even sure you will like. Oh but wait, the DL was corrupted! You just need to DL something ELSE for the THIRD PARTY SITE, and TRY AGAIN. Sure! Anybody would! I'm glad I read this, I'll be sure to avoid the trial for this game.

    edit:

"Well, I really have to question the blaming of Turbine or CM on this.  Either the package is corrupt or it's not, since clearly it wasn't...it sounds like a user issue that you couldn't get it to properly install using the other programs."

I was also blamed for my problems with the EQ2 trial issues when the assigned forum was littered (and still is) with multi-page threads complaining about the same exact problems. Players were also blamed for the issues with BioShock as well. Yeah.

Bottom line is that they made the decision to use FilePlanet as a distributor for the Euro version.

I hate to say it, but I too am a fileplanet hater.  Winzip and winrar should work fine.

try downloading it when your net is 52kb/s at its peak speed.  anyway i suggest that everyone avoid fileplanet for any downloads that they need as its is a crap site.  you can almost always find the download on a better site and you wont have to wait in a queue

I just downloaded the trail for D&DO a few days ago and it went smoothly.  I did not get my download from Fileplanet.  The download from DDO's website was quick and smooth.  I did have to try 3 email addresses to get a key though.  The first 2 attempts at getting a key didn't work.  The key was never sent.  But after a 3rd email address was tried, it went through.

I am trying the game out now and so far I am enjoying it.

you saw where he d/l it the second time and it still wouldn't open...until he used winrar; which perhaps would've worked the first time?

i can understand wanting to play a game right away; but most people sleep, have jobs/school/something other than being locked in a room and forced to have only a computer for a friend.

    this entire thread was sad.

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
