    MMORPG or MMOG, both work.

But none of those are MMORPG's.

    Massive
    Multiplayer
    Online
    Role
    Playing
    Game

Which means, alot of people online at once, over thousands.

If they aren't, then they are what?  MOG?  Multiplayer Online Game?  MOGs the same as MUDs, not Massively, but there are a few MUDs that goes by the thousand but still it's an MOG not MMOG.

There was this game, I can't remember if it was GunBound, that boasts a thousand players online at their game, (given and taken that is true) then they qualify as an MMOG.

UMMOG is 10k+ in 1 given server which is what Wish is boasting about but they are too late as Philippine Ragnarok Online Chaos server reached up to 17k+ players for months before they started to have different servers.  That means Ragnarok Online is qualifies as an "Ultra Massively Multiplayer Online Game" and Wish is not original and the first in it.

So which is which?  What are the qualifications for such?  Is it really the number or the "essence"??

Just some thought to ponder about.

    (doing research)

An mmo consists of 1 world and all the players play on the world. You dont get the option to choose, so everyone plays on the same server, and each can amass thousands of players.

Typically tho, they run multiple servers to decrease lag. But each server is a copy of the others, and runs the same world, with the same monsters, and the same items.

Gunbound runs games, each game consisting of 10? players, and there are hundreds of games, like most FPS games. I think it would be safe to call it an Mog, Multiplayer Online Game.

Gunbound and such can only classify as Multiplayer Online Games.

Gunbound does have a very very large number of players, but when you play you play in a short game with a maximum of 8 players. You need at least a few hundred all playing together to be classified as Massively Multiplayer Online Games.

Some MUDs have very large populations, and therefore some could fall into the MMOG and MMORPG category. They are exactly like the games that we consider to be MMORPGs, except with no graphics.

It doesn't need a few hundred to be classified as Massively Multiplayer, its the way the server is setup.... read my post. The term Massively Multiplay implies that it can be, but if the game is brand new are you going to say its not an mmo until it reaches 500 players?

There is no set in stone definition for a MMORPG, MOG, MRPG, etc... Raph Koster went over this on his personal site.

    http://www.legendmud.org/raph/gaming/index.html

Click on " gaming" then "essays" for anyone intrested in research on MMORPGs from one of the leading veteran game designer/developer in the RPG, and MMORPG industry.

All one can say is what is the current, common perception of a MMORPG.

     1. A game that NEEDS an internet connection to play.

     2. A game in which the game world is still alive, changing, active, even when you are logged off.

     3. A game world in which you have direct, and indirect influence on other players. Indirect influence would be the in game economy for example.

     4. A game world in which thousands of players can be online at the exact same time in the exact same world/server/shard at the exact same time. RuneScape for example can have up to 2,000 players on each server playing at the exact same time. Star Wars Galaxies can have up to 12,000 players on each server playing at the exact same time. Anarchy Online can have up to 25,000 to 50,000 players online at the exact same time on each server. EvE Online can have up to 50,000 and theoretically 100,000 players playing on the exact same server at the exact same time.

     5. A game world in which when you start, you create a character. Your chances of success are not based on your personal real life skills (like in Counter Strike for example). But are based on the skills your character has. The skills you decide your character will have or not have.

Re-looking at point #4, the MMORPG does not have to have thousands of players (like Asheron's Call 2 for example aka AC2, which has less than 50 players on some servers! I kid you not! LOL!). But it must have the potiential, the room, the intention, of having and allowing thousands of players to be able to play online at the exact same time on each server/shard/world.
