Can I borrow your time machine? Because Dark Age of Camelot didn't come out until October 2001. EverQuest was early 1999. But if you played DAoC first, you've been playing for less than 7 years.
There was something called Activeworlds once that I went on before Everquest. That wasn't a 'mmorpg' but it had many users on at once- I think it was ahead of its time because second life seems to be very similar to it. Then Everquest 2000-2001ish I think.

Well your wrong because DOAC went into testing in 1995 it then was 2D and Everquest was released to the public in 1999 it was in beta in 1997. So lets see I was 21 when I started playing eq and im 32 now do the math or maybe your not out of high school yet to know how . k thx bye
Played MUDs since 1997 (Furry MUCKs and old school Diku/ROM PVP MUDs). Played my first MMO with Asheron's Call back in 1999. So, about eleven years if you add MUDs, 9 if you focus solely on what is assumed to be the only MMOs (EQ and the other first MMOs [UO, Realm, and etc]).
Well your wrong because DOAC went into testing in 1995 it then was 2D
Never heard of it. Proof?
I have to agree with ianubisi, you need to prove this one. I have never heard this before either.
/agreed. According to Wikipedia the decision to develop DAoC came about in late 1999. I think you have your games screwed up or something. In fact I think a lot of folks who've answered this poll are having a little trouble remembering cause if that's right than over a third of the people here started playing around the time Ultima Online came out. I have a hard time believing that myself. Heck anyone will tell you that 90% of the people who play, WoW is their first MMO. LOL
True, I remember when DAoC was announced over at the vault network and I was lucky enough to get into beta for it. It was released in 2001. If I recall it was one of the fastest developed MMORPG's back then and done in just under 2 years time. It wasn't complete when it launched(zones and dungeons and MOBs where not all itemized), but the launch itself was fairly smooth.
I started back during UO beta 10+ years ago, don't quite remember exact dates due to being young, with money, my own house, and lots of mind altering substances. I do remember getting a new computer just to play the game at retail due to the horrible performance of my computer at the time. I also fondly remember the infamous "archer who killed the invincible Lord British" at the end of beta followed by the server going down!
Fun times!
MMO Vet since AOL Neverwinter Nights circa 1992. My MMO beat up your MMO. =S
I also started playing when UO beta was out. Still the best game ive played. Something about it that actually makes you feel like the character.
I recently started playing again on a free shard that started up about 4-5 months ago. Its UO before Lord Blackthornes revenge. After all these years its still an incredible game.
Well your wrong because DOAC went into testing in 1995 it then was 2D

Hmmm maybe it was Ultima Online it is possible, it was 2d and alot like Runescape . I smoked a hell of a lot of POT back then so could have my games mixed up. I was pretty sure though that the 3D version of DAOC came out on those dates. That and I have tested so many since 2000 , especially a lot of beta games in the last 4 years. I used to use this site for games.
www.onrpg.com I have tested every 3D Fantasy online MMO on this entire site now. 98% of them are very bad though. Tested Cabal last January it was not very good. I was bored of it after lvl 60. Been testing requiem and Rohan in there closed beta both pretty good games. Awaiting Open beta launch for both though and AoC is kick ass. Yet I have not played AION but I don't think it will live up to it's reputation. But only time will tell
Find it hard that someone could just "forget" UO =/
Was the greatest gaming experience I ever had, and is still one I haven't been able to emulate. There was just something about the undead invasion in trinsic that truly made me love that game. Not to mention inter guild fighting, reds, emotes, hanging out at the bank, making a town yours, etc. Just so much about one game... damn, now my sheets are dirty =/
Also the fact that UO release september 25 1997, and the beta wouldn't have been much more than a few months before that.

haha WTF is Cheezing ? as you would know then most beta games start 1-2 years before there even launched. But now adays most of those are korean and japense games. For example Archlord I tested Over a year before it's release. But they never fixed any of the bugs from beta before it went live and wanted 15$ a month to play it so I stopped playing it because even the GM's couldn't speak english and tested LOTR for 8 months before it was released. So the point would be that UO beta would have been in 95 or 96 . Maybe you wiki sites can tell you exactly that but I don't know, I never use them. Another example Hero Online has been out for 4 years and is still in beta. Also Rohan has been out for 2.5 years and in the last 3 months they just started Closed beta for the rest of the world. Having acess to Korean and Japanese servers is a bonus I must say . Everquest was created by verant interactive and sony didn't buy it out untill 2000 or 2001 but im sure you already new that. After sony realized MMO's were a multi million dollar a year buisness. But I am sure you knew that too.
Ultima Online actually had its first live test in early 1996, it was termed as many are an alpha test.
That said I started playing UO in 1997 for the bulk of my time in UO I played on the Catskills shard. I loved UO, it was my favorite MMO to date and no game since it has been able to capture that magi for me. I have played most all of them, including the bulk majority of the free offerings and some are better than others.
I played UO for 4 years roughly. EQ for 3-4 years, with a few breaks here and there. DAoC, SWG, AO, and so on down the line. Oddly enough never got into AC despite giving it a couple of tries, and I never bothered to try Shadowbane. Other than that I have played pretty much all the commercial releases up to and including Vanguard, PotBS. Hell I even played the Matrix Online.
UO, EQ, and WoW so far have been my favorites. Not that each was without issue, because CLEARLY they all had their own problems. But UO offered the right mix of things and no game has put them all together since then which makes zero sense to me.
It was one of the first, and clearly the one that was the first major commercial success. Why people would stray so far from a successful formula and failed to return to it is beyond me.

Do MUDS count?

Only 7 years for me. I like playing good games and the mmo grind really isn't fun, especially in the early days.

Here some proof his time line is off.

Asherons Call was my first, started playing over a year before DAoC came out, so ive probably been playing mmorpg's since 2000.

Yeah... What Hexxeity said.
I started playing Lineage in late 1997, so 10+ years.

Lineage was released in 1998 =/ Try again?
