I have read these forums for a long time now and I should know better to "not try" something based on these forums. That is not to say there is a lack of valuable information.
In reading the forums I noted numerous negative comments about LOTRO PVP and that is was weak. So, I decided after playing LOTRO for some time to actually give MP a shot. I created an Uruk and began to wander, quest, etc. To my suprise there was a 30+ Free Peoples raiding party hitting a major bad guy strong hold. Foolishly i tried to take on one of the characters and was doing OK until I got mobbed by a dozen others of varying classes. I wanted revenge so I set out again, hooked up with a Monster raiding party forming to counter the good guys. We held a bridge and I started traits for killing specific classes. I was responsible for the death of two lore masters, and Minstrel and several Champions.
I am not a hard core PVP player and never have been. Mainly becuase I always got ganked alot trying to learn. In MP I did not care all that much. I had a great, great time running around with other orcs, Wargs, and Spiders killing the Free People of Middle earth.
There appears, though I am not too deep into MP that there is quite a bit of depth to the choices of skill, corruptions, traits, etc. Lots to do and there are massive "tribes" which are like Kinships I guess.
Bottom line is I should not have listend to the jaded PVPers on these forums and tried it along time ago. I will be playing it more now and see how it develops. I will also being taking my Main there for a little good guy action too.
If you have not tried it give it a go. It may not be for you but it was fun for me.

Jaded PvPers response came as a result of the usual PvP vs PvE arguments. LOTRO was and is a PvE game with PvP side show that appeals to casaul PvPers and PvErs who want to dabble in PvP but not live in a PvP zone.
Turbine is mostly catering to PvErs (arguably the largest section of MMO players) and that doesn't sit well with hardcore PvPers. Not to mention that the later group often harbours an attitude how PvP is superior to to any other type of gaming.
Bottom line is ignore the jaded hardcore PvPers as they are rarely satisifed, contain a good number of PKers and griefers, and generally cannot stand anyone who is not a hardcore PvPer.
Heheh yep, it's quite fun. I love playing as a Warg and have made that my "main" in PvP. What's amazing is that you can see PvP between two large groups of Freeps and Creeps going on for hours at a stretch.
I've been involved in PvP runs that went on for 6 hours. I'm not kidding. They were still going when I finally logged out.
What makes it even more fun is when you find out the creep you're hunting with is someone you've quested with before... Or someone you've killed, or been killed by, when they were on their main. Of course, once that realization is made, you each become "standard" targets to each other.. almost a way of saying "Hi!"

Very true. I love that aspect.
The reasons people slam PVMP is as follows:
1) They don't understand what it is. There is this misconception that when you do monster play you just take control of some random temporary npc. This might have been the initial concept for pvmp, but it's certainly not what we have now.
2) What they really want is a symmetric, dual faction pvp game where you have two equal sides. Sometimes it's partly because they like playing the "evil" side, but in general they just think that's the way MMO's should be. However this type of design really limits the pve content, so I'm extremely happy that LOTRO didn't go that way.
3) They want PVP anywhere, anytime. Turbine made a strategic decision to not do this. I understand some of the reasons for wanting PVP anywhere, but there's also some benefits to keeping pvp limited to certain places. Having pvp be anywhere dilutes all the action. Concentrating the fighting is one good thing about lotro's approach.

I am not worried about getting flamed by the invsible poster. My self esteem is better then that but thanks!
The goal of my post was made with hope others might give PvMP a try. As others have stated now, it is fun. Yes, it is not the typical, hardcore, PVP but it is enjoyable.
I love the fact you build on a Monster and keep it around to grow and change. I noted several creeps that were significantly tougher looking and it showed in battle.
Anyway, don't want to put down the serious PVP crowd but my point was made and others agreed with so I am guessing it will drive at least one person on the fence to try it out. They many like it or they may not. I do and that is what matters to me.

MP is nothing more than an arena you can jump in to so you can get some PvP. You then use what other games would consider high end content (realm points more or less) to "level" your monster.
Its fucking weak, and thats the end of it. The monsters need to be balanced to be on par with the freeps, and not the other way around (that way carebears can still enjoy the PvE, and PvPers can get a decent run with MP).
There is no reason we shouldnt be able to have a 1-50 "normal" monster playing feature. Do quests, get loot, level up, etc. All of the satisfaction of leveling a normal character from 1-50 should be ours in monster play. Instead, we are handed a level 50, and we just hope the freeps are in the area. What rubbish.
This is what happens when carebears make a game. People who believe in a happy world where darkness overcomes the light. I shit on that.

I dont want to throw more fire onto the bonfire, but I think the dude has a point. I think it is great the OP loves the game and the Monsterplay and whatnot. And maybe the game is catering to all the "carebear" (I mean that in a non condescending way) players out there and maybe that is why it is so succesful.
HOWEVER, I personally think Turbine dropped the ball. With another IP or their own invention all that pve and monsterplay is fine, but considering this is TOLKIEN goddammit and no other IP is clearly well made for rvr, realm versus realm as this IP. They really dropped the ball on the IP. They took the easy route to make it into a carebear game with major attraction for the younger audience, not exclusively, but especially.
I find it really sad I cant log in as an Orc and start ravaging hobbits and breaking them into tiny pieces and .... ......... well you get the idea!
This is just my opinion, but I have seen dozens of others who are turned off by the pve centric game. Me too. I ALMOST want to try it for the MP aspect... but nahhh... not to just play in some arena. There is plenty of arena games out there and more coming soon (wow and aoc for example)...
edit: I am in WAR beta and as a PVPer this is where I will stay ... also I am casual, which is good in WAR, so I am sad to miss out on LOTRO, but Turbine chose to exclude me from the game. At least in WAR I get to be an Orc and pick on small pinkies..

But they didn't drop the ball. If you allow for R vs R or faction pvp then you allow for the possibility to change the outcome of the story.
Quite frankly that is not the lord of the rings then. I don't believe the author, his heirs or anyone else who owns rights to the IP want the story changed.
So then what do you have? a pvp game utilizing a Lord of the Rings Map. In which case it becomes a generic fantasy game with lord of the rings skins. Might as well NOT make The Lord of the Rings and just make a game on your own IP.
edt: and I agree, pvp players don't seem interested in PvE to get their characters up.

Either way, yours or mine, the story doesnt change, Frodo doesnt win or lose. We dont play Frodo. The game never ends, it is a perpetual fight, a mmo.
I know LOTRO is story arc'ed but this doesnt mean it has a real ending. And there is no way that one couldnt have the ebb and flow of a war, sometimes the dark side is getting the upper hand and sometimes the good side. Not so far from what the books describes, where the evil side almost wins..
So this is a senseless statement. And I think the game is just that GENERIC fantasy with LOTRO skin and not a very personalised game. Just Lotro with Wow skin minus hardcore aspects..

No, I would enjoy the extra content. LOTRO is a halfway solid MMO, and adding that extra aspect to the monster side of things would really open up more playerbase. I dont mind PvEing, provided the quests would be as epic and immersive as the FREEP's side.

Well, let me try to explain it to you so that it is more clear.
If you take the specific battles in the book, the ones that matter, then we know how they end. They have to end in the way they do or you are changing the story.
So you can't have a battle of Helms deep or the Battle of Gondor. The evil side has to lose.
So the only other way to do it is to have what we have now which are areas that are contested for faction vs faction pvp.

I cannot wait to see bitching, moaning, complaining and alike when all the "hardcore" pvpers flock to AoC PvP servers and WAR.
Btw, the opposite of carebear is pvptard and I am glad Turbine didn't ruin the game to placate them.
Like it or not, it is a moot point as Tolkien foundation was specifically against open world PvP and that is not abotu to change. Constructing a whole parallel game for monster play is not practical as it would drain resources. But leat us beat the dead horse one more time just for the heck of it.

Well I still dont agree. What you say is that you prefer being dragged around by the nose in a closed storyline with finite and already decided outcomes. And where did those other heroes and mages come from all of a sudden?
By having an mmo you already are breaking the "rules" of the book. So either or it is a matter of whether you want to have freedom or not. Either way you arent breaking anything crucial but rather reinventing the story again.
If we should follow your logic then there should only be one fellowship of heroes and all other players should wait in line for their turn to play Gandalf or Frodo or whoever...

It's not an arena. It's an entire zone plus an enormous public dungeon.
Its fucking weak, and thats the end of it. The monsters need to be balanced to be on par with the freeps, and not the other way around (that way carebears can still enjoy the PvE, and PvPers can get a decent run with MP).
Oh, what a compelling argument you have there. And don't whine about creeps being underpowered. I play both sides, and they both have their advantages. I've got a rank 4.5 (ranked pre-book 12) reaver and a guardian that's barely rank 5. In fact I suspect that the new defiler class will actually make the creep side dominant.
No reason? I gave very good and logical reason in my post that you quoted above. Maybe you should try addressing someone's points rather than just spouting your BS. Having equal factions (i.e. a 1-50 experience for monsters) would take up valuable resources. You'd essentially be splitting all the content in half for no good reason. If you want the PVE experience, then make a freep. If you want to PVP you can make a creep or use a high level freep. Developing a PVE game for monsters is pointless, hurts content development, and frankly MAKES NO SENSE FOR THIS IP. The only thing it would do is make a few misfits like youself that want to PVE as "evil" happy, and it would greatly detract from the overall PVE experience.
This is what happens when carebears make a game. People who believe in a happy world where darkness overcomes the light. I shit on that.
Yea, I'm sooooo dissapointed that you aren't playing LOTRO. (sarcasm). Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
End venom.

I had a crazy pondering on all of this, just bare with me:
Turbine did exactly what LOTR fans, as a whole (not individually but as the market has demonstrated) would want in an MMO for the lore.
Where do I get this thought?
Don't look at the MMO market, but the Lord of the Rings license as it's used across all game formats.
Take the board game for example (I mean the really nice one that's been out for years, not any of the stuff marketed by the New Line Cinema movie):
The board game is pure teamwork. Everyone playing in the game is working against Sauron, and either the players "win" by beating the board game working together or lose by being defeated by what the game throws at you.
Even in some of the movie licensed games of late....
The LOTR CCG: Everyone is trying to get their fellowship to the end of the journey; granted the other players send their monsters at you to prevent you, but essentially everyone is playing "the good guys".
Anyways, this is kind of a weird rant but the point is:
LOTR has always been successful amongst its fans in many gaming iterations because I'm convinced the Tolkien estate WANTS it to be marketed differently as a license with an emphasis on team work and fighting back "the darkness". Even the Pen and Paper RPG (have only experienced the Decipher rules and not MERPS I'm affraid) seemed heavily focus on the players being Heroes and penalizing evil actions.
So yeah, LOTRO is a carebear game over all.
Get over it man, it's a fantasy license made popular by pipe smoking hippies and Led Zepplin fans (myself included).
AoC goes in Beta this week have fun there, and leave LOTRO to do its own thing if you don't like it.
Yea so you got your little pve game. So what. Go have your kids fun then.
As I said it is good for you and others, fine. Just not for all. Sad to see a great IP broken down into the vanilla stuff that LOTRO is..
/em hands Draccan some sugar for his sour grapes
The IP wasn't "broken down" into anything. It's the type of experience Turbine - with the blessings of Tolkien Ent. - set out to make.
All this "oh they took such potential and ruined it" crap is so old and shallow and obvious. Every single MMO out there that doesn't cater to PvP'ers gets the same treatment.. "Oh, the game could have been so much more if only they didn't listen to the carebears. What wasted potential. If only they saw it our way"
Please... get over it. There are PvP games out there for the playing. Many of them are listed right here on this site and have trials. Take your pick.
and the cash shop selling asphalt..." - Mimzel on F2P/Cash Shops
Well I disagree completely about this IP being suited for RVR beyond what it currently does. Certainly not in Eriador, where the current game is taking place. It might suit LOTR for stuff like that to go on down between Gondor and Mordor, but it's going to take a long time for Turbine to complete that area. Including everything between Ered Luin and the shire and gondor/mordor would have been an impossible task for Turbine without making enormous compromises on the quality and depth of the game's areas. Even then there would need to be a lot of restrictions. As cool as you might think it would be to play an orc ravaging through the shire and rivendell, it just doesn't make sense for LOTRO.
The fact is that LOTRO would not make sense as an equal faction game. If you look at games such as WOW, DAOC, etc, most of their PVE is generic so that both sides can participate. There's no way that would work in lotro. Sauron and the free people do not have common enemies.
