I'm trying to find out definitively whether or not you can transfer data from a DVR to your own hard drive. Specifically, I have a Motorola VIP 1216 DVR not TiVo. As far as I can tell, there is no means to use the DVR to record and then transfer it to another HD via the USB port on the DVR box (like transferring files from your internal HD to your external HD). So the only means to record shows to your own HD (preferably an external one) is to use another video capture device? If so, has anyone done this or know of a better technique? Or even have any recommendations?
In all honesty, my purpose is to record all the episodes of Battlestar Galactica which are airing on SCIFI all week. My concern is that I hear DVRs have a tendency to crash and loose their recorded shows and I'd like to back it up.

No experience with it myself but my best bet would be to set up an analog splitter(not needed but then you won't have the computer and TV running at the same time, videos on computer aren't as comfortable), run one to your TV and another to your computer that has a video capture card(most bought version on tiger direct if the cable/dvr box has output that plugs into it you can shove it on your computer: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=612720&Sku=O38-1022).
Seems only a bit more complex than plugging in your TV/DvD/Gamesystem at the same time.

Yeah, I was hoping to make the process short: 1. Record show with DVR, 2. Download DVR recording to removable HD. I guess if it is something I want to save, I will have to use a capture device and transfer via the computer to a portable HD.
Unless you have something like TiVo I highly doubt you'd ever find such a thing(released by your company). Some do have backup devices and devices that let you watch stuff on the go. However if you look long enough you'd probably find exactly that.
As a matter of fact you aren't the only one who will be looking for this come the 15th. One of the dish/satalite companies accepted a 'bribe'/contract to delete all pay per view movies after they've been on your DVR for 24 hours.

Yeah, I am ready for this final season of BSG. I think I am just going to get a capture device and record it as I watch it. Then I'll worry about grabbing the other seasons as they get repeated. Too bad there isn't a tool (which I'm sure motorola has somewhere) that can just copy the data off the DVR's HD.
most dvr's have the output such as usb but the cable companies do not turn them on. or at least, time warner won't.

Yeah, mine has a usb port, but as far as I can tell, it wouldn't do me any good as DVRs write in a different format than our normal .avi .mpeg etc.
