If it's not written by Maynard, it's crap.

Mainly some classic rock: Hendrix, Beatles, Zeppilin, and Springsteen to mention some of my favorites I also like metal although screamo doesn't appeal to me much.

  • SheistaSheista Member UncommonPosts: 1,203

Those are some pretty generic genres.  There are a lot more categories that music can fall into.  I like rock, but I absolutely hate that MTV crap - Nickelback, Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, and crap like that.

So I'll just list a top 5, ignoring genre.

    1. Muse

    2. Modest Mouse

    3. Tool

    4. Radiohead

    5. Queens of the Stone Age

My top 3 switch positions with eachother a lot depending on what I'm in the mood for.  And outside of those bands, I like quite a few.  I even like some country music, but it doesn't fall into my favorites category.

That's not actually that big a stretch...

EDIT: Don't know why I forgot to post my opinion lol... Try again...

I put my vote in for Jazz, as I'm putting a bet in that noone else/very few others would, because most people tend to 'like' jazz, but not 'listen to' it. I put myself in both camps, as well as playing it. Which brings me to my real point on this. There aren't any genres I don't listen to, BUT that isn't to go with the copout a lot of the general public use 'Oh, I listen to anything.' I'm INCREDIBLY picky about my music. I find it hilarious when generic indie kids tell me they listen to everything, without adding the proviso 'that NME tells me to listen to.' I can always prove them wrong by throwing on some of the ole Gorgoroth, or some Avant Garde Jazz.

My criteria for music that I will happily listen to, is exactly that: there has to be something good to listen to. Something that I can enjoy for the 500th time, as much as I enjoyed the first time (and there damn well better be something worth enjoying the first time, or else I'm gonna snap the CD). I find that with jazz recordings, even as a drummer (and drumming has come on A LOT since the 1940 recordings I enjoy) I can still listen for the 500th time and be just as in awe at the rhythmic complexities, and improvised melody as I was the first time I tried to grasp what's going on in the song. I get the same from Dragonforce though as I do from Miles Davis (maybe less so ;) ), or even from solo acoustic stuff, like David Meade, or more contemporarily acceptable, Secondhand Serenade. Music needs to have a depth that can take all of my attention, but it also should fit seemlessly in the background if I don't want to pay attention to it.

I will have to say though, I HATE indie. With a f*cking passion. The least deep, imaginative music in the entire world, with the least talent involved in playing it. However, I did say above that there's no genre that I outright say 'no' to. There are a couple of indie bands that I do enjoy - namely, Scouting for Girls and Oasis. I mean, I hate Oasis for what they did to music, but come on. Wonderwall is fucking addictive.

Where is the R&B? I voted Hip Hop, because there is no R&B.

For myself, it tends to be a mix of metal, rock and even some classical stuff.  Majority of the stuff I listen to isn't all that main stream.  You won't hear it on your broadcast radio stations in your city.

We feel the same way then.. I only listen to music that I like listening to, and I almost never like any songs outside of those genres though..

This probably isn't your style, but you will certainly appreciate the talent.

Regarding the poll: 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8. I never really cared for rap/hip-hop or pop music. I mostly listen to older stuff from the 60s - 90s and metal, but I have all genres to fit any mood (except cappin fools or whatever pop music's message is).
