Move over Wow, here comes PoBS, 2 weeks to endgame

ArclanArclan Member UncommonPosts: 1,550

If FLS wants to retain players for at least one month of resubs, you need to change game mechanics so players can not reach endgame in two weeks.  By endgame, I mean you are fighting the highest level PVE mobs (level 50s).  PVE ships sure have enough guns, but the AI is severely lacking.  And there is one crucial problem with named's; they don't fire their guns ever!!  You can walk right up to a named ship and board it, and it will not fire one shot at you.  Which is silly since that little icon says "this ship is much tougher than normal ships."

I've never played WoW, but I don't think every player can make endgame in two weeks.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon.
In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit

Racing to the endgame is not the way to enjoy Potbs which is a primarily slower moving wooden ship game for thinkers that use tactics.

it will never be a WOW repetative hack & slash type melee game for easy style gameplay - if you play Potbs like that it will not be for you.

I left before the free month was up but I have been keeping an eye on these forums hoping some light might be at the end of the tunnel - unfortunately this game is a *floater*. I see potbs lasting even less time than NCSofts auto assault.

I hate the way people keep quoting the game as having  'slow but tactical' combat - even as low as level 20 its possible to outfit a ship that can run alongside level 40+ npcs and simply sail along shooting, maybe pop a hull repair or face your other side around when things look damaged - where on earth is the tactics in that ? Dont even get me started how insignificant the NPC rats get when you approach 40 yourself - hell even at mid 30s i could take on 3 mid 40s NPCs and I hardly found it to tax my brain.

NPC rats dont repair, dont use many skills and have p**s poor outfitted ships, they use virtually no tactics at all when there is more than one of them in the fight.

This game has some of the WORST npc AI I have EVER seen...

Is this a PVP game or PVE game? (question is rhetorical, don't answer)

Actually, it sounds a lot like EVE..... after losing a ship or two in my first two weeks, I never lost a single fight to the NPC ships in the missions (right up through level 4's) even though sometimes I was swarmed by 15 or more ships.  Point being, EVE's PVE sort of stinks.  which is fine, because that's not the point of the game.  Its all about the PVP endgame.

I"ve not played PotBS, but it sounds to me like they were going for a strong PVP end game, so maybe its not failing as badly as you think.

    Since when was leveling fun?

I've always played MMOs for end-game, not to grind and do stupid quests all day. End-game is whatever you want it to be, similar to EVE. Just because you aren't spoon fed raids that take 8 hours doesn't mean the game is lacking. Be innovative, make the game, don't just play it.

But its "tactical" thus good ,don't you see , can't you see how much thinking and planning it takes to use a level 24 locust to circle around , rake the crew of 1 of 3 lvl 40-45 ships , board and auto win the combat , rinse and repeat again and again - it's so very "challenging"

Honestly , once you have leveled to about 20ish you should have the tactics down where you can take on any single NPC ship all the way up to 50 and by late 20's multiple level 40's and have zero risk of dying - zero

Putting "levels" in and the "XP Bar" was just a mistake from the start.

All it does is incourage the "level up rush".

Let's be honest, we all do it.  In any game with levels you are ALWAYS focusing on how long, how much, how many... until the next "level".

And for some players, that focus becomes the ONLY focus.  At that point the game stops being fun and becomes pure grind.

There are other ways to approach this.

Don't show players the levels.  You can still have "levels" and XP behind the scenes (because from the programmers point of view it makes life easier) but the players do not need to see it.

And you can use multiple 'triggers' and variables for gaining skills that will actually encourage the RPG element of a game.

"Levels"  are a hang over from the pen and paper D&D days and were designed the way they were because it was easy to track a single variable (XP)

From the little I have read about WAR it seems they are making steps in this direction (away from visible levels) but we still have a way to go.

Nothing says irony like spelling ideot wrong.

Yes, but the problem is, I still have to sit behind my keyboard and try to stay awake as I do this. I really tried hard to like this game, I really did. It seemed different, didn't have elves, orcs, and hobbits. But the execution of the idea by FLS is just so poor. They might as well try to save the damn thing by adding elves, orcs and hobbits in now.

Yes, they are promising improvements. Even now, as we speak, they are fighting, and winning, the war against gold sellers. Of course, ultimate victory against gold sellers will come when their last subscriber has finally left because they failed to address the problems with their implimentation of the game concept.

    Yawn.....
