Hey all,
I'm completely bored with WoW. I tend to get completely bored with it, and then go back, but in the meantime I'm looking for an MMO to play. Ideally it would be free since I'll probably drop it as soon as I get sucked back into WoW (could be tomorrow! damn you wow) or I get accepted into WAR or Mythos beta.
I saw the list of free MMOs stickied at the top, but I'm not looking to try out a bunch. I'm looking to find out what the "best" free MMO out there right now is - based purely on popular opinion. I'd like to know what the most played, most hated by purists, most controversial free MMO is at this point in time. Kind of looking to find the WoW of free MMOs - tons of people play it, tons of people hate it, and overall it's a decent experience the first time through. (PvP would be nice but not necessary)
So anyone want to inform me of this magical free MMO? Thanks in advance

There is no such thing as a free lunch, only free to subscribe and micro transactions to play.
However, several games do have decently long free trials, notably City of Heroes/Villans and EVE. Both are radically different from WoW. If it's only a little different from WoW then try out LOTRO, the mechanics don't appeal to all, but then again no game other than WoW manages to appeal to nearly all.
Otherwise free MMOs which I've enjoyed: Shadowbane and Anarchy Online are both playable.
Voyage Century is a very nice free MMORPG. The concept is great - sailing your own ship for exploration, trade or battle. Historical and geographical accuracy is present for the most part. Costuming is also periodic. If they could improve two aspects it would be perfect. 1.) Interface 2.) Quest repetition . Otherwise, fab game and can't beat the price.
Even though it isn't RPG in a total immersive sence, I like to play Shot Online to break up the routine. It can be completely free. You can micro-pay for 'cool stuff' that range from appearance to an extra +1 here or there, but if you're patient you can work your way up instead.
Fishing Champ by Game Campus is goofy fun. A great game when you have twenty minutes to kill, but can be addictive if you're into competitions and catching "The Big One".
Heroes in the Sky was a great beta. It's a dogfighting game that lasts 10 - 20 minutes per game. You can level up your plane, gain rank, get new weapons, etc. Its scheduled to come out in late February. Also found at the same spot Shot Online is and Fishing Champ: http:///www.gamescampus.com
Happy MMO hunting!

No real best in the F2P category IMO. That said, consider trying Sword of the New World, Archlord, RFO or Perfect World

This would be your best bet. A warning though, don't try to play SotNW unless your computer is just a little above average. Check the requirements and make suer you meet them.
I would actually take Archlord out of those four though, I didn't get too much into Archlord, but that's just me.
