Atari Publishing: Are they going bankrupt?

LaterisLateris Member UncommonPosts: 1,831

Has anyone been following Ataris money problems? Are they going bankrupt as a publisher? Won't this in turn hit DDO?

I recall an announcement that they no longer are making new titles. However they were focusing thier efforts on another area of the gaming industry, not sure exactly which area.

It is a shame. Atari was a legend.

Want to know a little secret ?

Atari is dead for 5 years now. Actually it is not really Atari.

It was bought by another great company we all (well most rpg players) love and respect.

    Namely : Interplay

Just as reminder - guys behind troika, bioware....or games such baldurs gate and fallout

When Interplay bought Atari , they decided to call them selves Atari , because it is so cool

Anyway, since then Atari is pushing a lot of great games, that somehow all turned to be market failures

Vampire:Bloodlines , Temple of Elemental Evil , Witcher (actually doing well in sales) ....etc

    You mean Infogrames?

Infogrames are the owners of Atari. According my gaming magazine here (Superplay) Infogrames has decided to reorganize the company management. However the European Atari states that the economical problems are isolated to American Atari only and Atari in Europe will keep producing games.

Atari has had money problems for awhile now, as they mainly just outsource their IPs to other companies it won't have a major impact on anything we see. It just means internal development is halted, and as said above, that only applies to the American branch of the company.

So for DDO fans what does it mean if Atari North America has all these troubles since they are the publisher and turbine is the developer.

    Ty!

Following the loss of its Chief Executive Officer and negative financial forecasts, Atari has 90 days to raise its standing with investors to remain on the NASDAQ exchange.

Infogrames Entertainment has announced that its public U.S. subsidiary Atari (ATAR) received a notice from Nasdaq on December 21 which warned the company that it faces delisting from the NASDAQ Stock Market unless the minimum market value of its shares recovers to meet Nasdaq's requirements within 90 days.

Atari's market capitalization was below $15 million for 30 consecutive business days prior to Dec 21. Delisting will be avoided if the $15 million minimum is met for at least 10 consecutive trading days prior to March 20, 2008.

Atari shares fell $.04 to close at $1.44 on Thursday and opened on Friday at $1.40. The company has approximately 13.48 million outstanding shares.

It means nothing...Turbine owns the IP for DDO and Develops all the software   Atari simply 'published' the game as in handled marketing and creation for the disks.  They can easily find another publisher though this seems unnecessary since all content for DDO are done as modules that come for free with a subsciption.   If they were doing full blown expansions that needed disk release i could see where it might get touchy.    Atari's role in DDO is so little that other than on the website & the box you dont' see a tag for Atari anywhere.

Please Refer to Doom Cat with all conspiracies & evil corporation complaints. He'll give you the simple explination of..WE"RE ALL DOOMED!

Turbine own nothing. All Dungeons and Dragons material whether digital or not is owned solely by Wizards of the Coast. Atari are, and for the forseeable future also the only company anywhere in the world that is allowed to distribute and publish Dungeons and Dragons computer games.

What this means for DDO is that Atari are unlikely to relaunch or readvertise the game out of their own budget, but otherwise nothing at all. The game is already out, it's funded by Turbine and Wizards and neither of those companies are having any financial problems. And if there was a paid for expansion, Atari would still publish it as per their contract with Wizards.

Their financial problem is not impacting their ability to print disks or publish games, only internal development.
