Hey, I was thinking of getting into an MMO, I havent played any recently goes I had tried a few and gave up temporarily. I was wondering what would be agood MMO to take up. I really have no preferences over Sci-Fi or Fantasy, however the cheaper the game or monthly fee, the better.

If PvP is what you're looking for, look no further than DAoC. You can get all the expansion packs and the original title cheap as dirt now, and they've basically rearranged all focus in that game to the RvR. It's a lot of fun.
World of Warcraft is a popular choice, though you'll see most agree it's probably not actually the best MMO out there as far as originality. Be prepared to raid, raid, and raid some more. But if that's your thing, go for it.
EVE Online is pretty nice in that it's only got a monthly subscription. It's a lot more complicated than WoW (Pretty much everything in the genre is), but it's fun nonetheless. It's also a Sci-Fi.
You may want to check out the LFGame boards on this site. Should send you off in the right direction.
If you want a PVE games, I suggest aking a look at World of Warcraft, Lord of the Rings Online, City of Heros/Villains
If you want PVP games, take a look at Guild Wars, Dark age of Camelot (as above), Fury
If you want Sci Fi, Tabula Rasa and Eve Online are basically your main choices.
As for cheapness, Probably cheapest in the short term is Daoc, since its all free and you just pay a subscription (at least for the main elements), however, over a few months, Guild wars or fury would likely be cheapest since you just pay for the game and no subscription. World of Warcraft has come down in price, but because its a PVE based game, your pretty much obligated to buy all expansions in addition to its subscription. Do not recall what Eve's payment is. TR is likely the most expensive.
Good luck
Torrential
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
DAoC used to have the best PvP imHo, but now it's just an instancied PvE game with a lot of long time gamers who knows a lot more about PvP and stuffing than a newb could learn.
I played thy game for 5 years, and the last add-ons are really sad (1 same new race/class for everyone.. woot).
To me, the best thing to do is to register for actual beta-tests (WAR, AoC), pray to be chosen, and play some F2P while waiting for the release of a new real good game.
Btw, if you really want to spend some money.. buy Hellgate London, which is a pretty good game (not really a mmo but..) now that almost all bugs have been corrected.

try WoW or EQ2. being a new mmo player they have everything you could possibly want and from there you can look at finding a more preference specific game later.

If your thinking of going down the WoW path . . dont!
Play LOTRO instead, far superior - both have a lack of any meaningful PvP, but LOTRO is just better in every area than WoW.
Look through the entire game list ( there's a button at top ) and you will find a group of people for each of those games ( the ones the still exists, anyway ) who will say their game is the best. it's a highly subjective term.
Go through the list, do some trials, look at the websites, whatever. Ultimately, only you can decide what mmo is the best.....for you.
I'd go for EQ2 long before the peice of shit called WoW.

Exept he says he prefers Sci-fiTo the OP - Well there are 2 sci-fi games ive personally tried.
Neocron 2 - a post apocolyptic FPS MMO.
EvE online - A Futuristic space trading Combat simulator.
Which one is best for you is up to you but both of these games DO have free trials so it wont cost you anything to give them a try.

Retired from: Neocron, Everquest, Everquest 2, Guild Wars, RF Online and Final Fantasy VII
Currently Playing : EvE Online.
For PVP? Wait for Warhammer Online to release.
For PVE? Looks like World of Warcraft will continue to dominate for some time.
For strange? European developers are coming out with some weird fantasy games where you play an angel or character with wings. (Aion?)
I would say Guild Wars. It's amazing and you only have to pay for the game once. After that there are no monthly fees.
You may also enjoy Aion when it is released.
Eh, FFXI for me.
There is just a huge amount of realism. The graphics (assuming you have a good computer) make the world feel alive. The constant updates, and very in-depth quests and story missions make up for its slow pace. I love a game where team work is a key, and where gear isnt as important as player skill.
Lord of the Rings Online is the best on maturity of players, PvE emphasis, artwork. If you have read the books, you will really love the lore and actually read those quests and the scenery is fantastic...but best of all (if that's what you like) the community is very mature, far older and better mannered than most games out there. Downside is that leveling was a tad too quick and Turbine is almost but not quite keeping up.
While it is popular to bash WoW, it is actually a great game..especially the early and mid game on the PvE servers..the flow is great, lore is solid and although cartooney, the scenery is good. The PvE is good fun, PvP battlegrounds are addicting. The end game is based on PvP and raiding....raid or die. The major drawback is the community...wowbrats abound.
Vanguard is a strange case..great potential but the worse launch in recent history. Give it another year, if it gets rid of the diplomacy card game and figures a way to reduce the world size or arrange good interaction areas, and put an emphasis on fun...it could still become a great game....but odds are it will never regain the numbers necessary to be viable.
EQ2 opened with a lot of bad assumptions and manic desire to control too much. Most of these problems they have now remedied but it has already grown a bit long in the tooth...few want to go into a game that old.
Me, I've played most MMORPGs and betaed quite a few and find the people around you is the most important part, so am now enjoying LotRO on the Nimrodel server....and it is at a good spot to join in, still a lot in the newbie areas and Turbine will probably have the polish applied by the time you get to 50.
I'd go for EQ2 long before the peice of shit called WoW.
Exept he says he prefers Sci-fiRead his post again.
