I bought nothing from the auction house, did questing and grinding. I have 56g. DId blizzard actually expect you to have 100g at level 40? I don't see how it is possible. I have run multiple dungeons sold some items here and there. Decently equipped.
How can I farm the other 50g quickly and get my mount?

Actually, the way to have 100g (easy) when you hit 40 is to find the few items you can craft that are actually worth something to other players, farm the mats, make them, then sell them on the AH.
I did that with my Hunter as a Skinner / Leatherworker and had my 100g way before I hit 40.
Main items I made for sale were Barberic Bracers, Toughened Leather Gloves, and some sort of Pants (cannot remember the name). But, the Barberic Bracers were the mainstay at ~5g each.
Should be even easier now with the inflated prices for Greens with INT on them.
Sadly, it is probably to late for you to go this route. So, I would recommend farming Humanoids for Wool and Green INT armor drops. Sell those on AH for 30% less than anyone else is selling for (you want them to actually sell and not lose coin for deposits). Use Bid/Buyout where Bid and Buyout are within 10% to 15% of each other; will look cheap, but encourage buyer just to spend the extra few silver on the buyout.
Or, farm Tanaris or SFK in the hopes of getting that one drop you can sell for 40g to 50g.
Good Hunting
Thanks. Yah it sucks now. I might have done something "wrong" but 100g for a mount seems quite "out of reach" for a level 40 that didn't get twinked.

Its not the price of the mount that will hurt you, its the riding traing. The mount itself isnt that expensive. My advice is make sure you get your riding skill trained in a city that you are at least honored in. It will save you a good chunk of gold.

Is this your first time leveling a character to 40?
I remember when I got my first character to level 40, and didn't have enough money at all. Took me till level 44 or 45 to get all the money I needed, but I just kept questing instead of farming all too much.
Second character I got to 40 I easily had the 100 gold I needed. Both were warriors.
Did you level after 2.3 patch? They made leveling much faster between 20-60, so it makes sense that you would hit 40 with less gold than pre-patch.
I think the fastest way to make gold is 2 gathering professions. Mining/skinning is the best combo I've found. Even low level ores make decent gold lately - like 2g per stack of copper ore on my server. One tip, don't smelt the ore - it's worth more than the smelted bars because jewel crafters want to prospect it - just stick the ore straight up on the AH. Selling cloth helps too, but ores make more money faster. Another thing you can do if you like playing with the market is to learn the price range for a particular item that's always in demand (e.g small radiant shards) and watch out for deals. Example -on my server the shards comfortably sell for 7-8g. If I see someone dumping a bunch for 5g or less, I'll buy them, then relist for the right price, or just under, like 6.99g. Basically this way your gold is working for you rather than sitting in the bank.
good luck!
100 gold assumes no faction
if you are honored with Taurens, its 90 gold (10% discount)
if you are exalted with Taurens, its 80 gold (20%discount)
regarding farming,
Mageweave seems to always be overpriced no matter what server Ive tried
- farm some level 40 humanoids for the cloth (Ogres / Jungle Trolls / etc)

I think that it has pretty much been said already, but from the off it is always better to get skinning and Mining as they are the two skills that can easily be used while you are going about your levelling. Stacks of copper bars will sell for between 1.5-2 gold on my server and probably more on the horde side, so you can see how a few hours gathering while you level can easily make you quite a bit of cash.
Also remember that pretty much everything in the game has a value and so remember to loot everything and i mean 'everything'. OK, that grey cloak may only be worth 40 coppers, but it is 40 coppers that you didn't have before.
On top of that, get to know the auctions as a lot of dropped items will sell on there. Again, some items may only bring several silver at a time, but it all adds up. Just make it a habit to store up items as you are going about your normal business and drop into the local AH as and when your bags are full of saleable items.
Lower instance runs will also be profitable, on the alliance side a simple 15 minute run through the stockade can make from 10-80g depending on what drops and i assume it would be the same for Horde lower instances too.
Good luck.
It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.
Thanks guys!

I started a shaman on the Sentinels server when that was a new server and I didn't get a mount until lvl 52, i had the ghost dog though.

if I were to kill a titan tomorrow and no CCP employees showed up to say grats I would petition it.
Waiting for: the next MMO that lets me make this macro
if hp < 30 then CastSpell("heal") SpellTargetUnit("player") else CastSpell("smite") end
you could be like me and play on a somewhat inflated server
i had 300g (mostly from herbalism and buy low sell high)
Roll a druid and make life much more simple.
People with dual gathering skills (e.g. mining/skinning) always have enough money for their mount.
There is however, a potential problem here in that Blizz has recently rebalanced some aspects of the game but not others. In order to reach level 40, a player now needs to experience less content (due to increased levelling rates) which means at that stage he will have picked up fewer drops and completed fewer quests - in other words he will be poorer. In order to properly maintain balance Blizz should have cut the cost of mounts.
To the OP: there are several methods of getting cash fast, but some (such as AH trading) involve game knowledge that many first time players lack. The simplest way is to look at your craft skill and then check what sells well on the AH. Don't be afraid to ask in the trade channel as well. For example:
Mining: Iron ore sells for around 6-7g a stack on my server. Mithril sells for even more. Hence after an afternoons mining you should easily have enough money to pay for your mount.
Herbalism: Sell anything you gather. Note that the price of herbs varies a lot more than ore, but some herbs are very profitable.
Enchanting: Scan AH for cheap greens. Disenchant them and sell the results
Jewelcrafting: Buy ore and prospect it. Sell the gems.
Many professions: Check which items are needed to complete quests - for example there is a series of quests in the badlands that needs a variety of items (such as frost oil), all of which sell well on the AH
Many professions: There is often a fair amount of profit to be found in making rare items - particularly items that are useful to people gearing up level 19 and 29 twinks. If you can churn out level 19 blues you will make a lot more money than making level 20 blues.
Also: You may want to try farming low level instances such as SFK for drops. Sell all the greens, blues and cloth you find. This is particularly effective for enchanters who can disenchant the greens and BoP blues.

I have always had enough money for my mount when I got to 40. I usually take mining and skinning but I never really bother leveling skinning after awhile. I think it would be better to smelt the ore into bars first until that stops giving you exp because leveling up mining without smelting always seemed a little hard for me. Besides, it's not like you lose more than 20-30 silver selling a stack of bars vs a stack of ores.
