Factions in EQ2

This is a rather noobish question about the game, sorry. I've been playing off and on for a few months but haven't really thought about this until tonight when I rolled an human fury in Timorous Deep. My main is a high elf wizard whose home is in Kelethin.

Anyway, is there much difference in the population of the two factions in EQ2 on most servers like there in the case of, say, WoW? I'm mainly wondering if most players tend to pick one side over the other. (I'm on Crushbone right now).

My main reason for asking is that I'm considering betraying with either of my characters at some point.

under 20, factions matter somewhat (both Antonica and Commonlands have kill-on-sight guards)

after level 20, factions are largely meaningless

unlike WoW,  both sides can team up in the same group to quest

Wouldn't quite say they are meaningless.  Fens of Nathsar for instance have both Iksar and Sarnak factions.  Do a quest for one side & lose faction with the other.  Both factions have plenty of mobs around the zone so i wouldnt want to be KoS with either side.

I meant the City factions you can betray to

if you play on  a pvp server then city allignment matters cause it defines if you fight on good or evil side in faction based pvp. on a pve server it is mainly cosmetic, you can be in same guild or group with players from opposing factions. the way to some adventure spots is longer for some cities but thats the only real difference on pve servers.

Thanks for the answers, everyone. After playing WoW, I was expecting there to be a bit more to the differences between good and evil characters. I had no idea you could group, be in the same guild with, or even send mail between characters that were opposing alignments.

So, if I wanted to go about switching to good to evil after completing Timorous Deep, how would I go about doing that? Do I still have to betray if I haven't done any of the citizenship quests yet? (The only citizenship quest I've come across so far is for Freeport.)

    Thanks

you can now betray at any level and as often as you want. the betrayal now is a more faction based thing so you do the start quest which destroys your original city allignment. after that one you end up as an exile in haven (underground city which has all basic things that are needed). from that point on you have to earn faction with your new city and when you got enough faction you can do a final quest that makes you citizen of the new city.

Downside of Betraying is that you will loose all spellupgrades, all your spells will be apprentice 1 again, even if you are a neutral class and can and want stay the same class in the new city.

    Thanks for the replies.

After posting last night, I went ahead and moved my wizard to TD to quest.  I had heard that evil characters could quest in Kelethin, and wanted to see if the guards would attack me.  They ignored me, and I was able to do about every quest in the zone.

After that, I went to TD with my level 8 high elf fury. It was surprisingly easy to run through Butcherblock Mountains.  And with mind over matter, I was able to float right to the flight path.  Unless there's a specific race that I want to play through TD and then betray, I'll probably just make a character in Greater Faydark, and then run to TD for the faster leveling and the much better gear.
