I bought ROK when it was released.  I am a new player to EQ2.  This seems like a great game so far.  I've made a Sarnak Shadow Knight and have done all the starter area quests and am now lvl 22.

My question is, are there storyline main/primary quest lines like in GW/LOTRO?  I feel swamped with thousands of quests (which is not a bad thing).  But was just wandering if there is a main quest series to follow along with all the regular quests.

    Correct...

There actually are MANY stories going on at once...so, your not limited to one story...that has an ending...(thus the title "EVER" quest)

There are many factions, with many agenda's in various locations...just try to follow story lines that you enjoy...

If you like grouping, there are tons of Heroic and Epic quests as well as the Heritage line...

For solo, there are specific factions who need specific things...and these will be the quests you will do...

And of course...as you level your Tradeskills...then you have the Crafting line as well..

No need to worry...just go explore, have fun...think sandbox, and you will enjoy yourself.

    Cheers!

There's a reason why they call this game Everquest. There's no linear epic quest storyline that follows you around from area to area like in LOTRO. Instead, pretty much each area in EQ2 has multiple storylines going on and you can choose which ones you want to do instead of being a linear game you get plenty of choices. For example, In greater faydark, the big questline here involve the Crushbone orcs, the questline for it starts at around level 10 and culminate with a big battle with the current Crushbone orc emperor D'vinn at around level 35. The story here is focused on the orc and how they came to power and also the politics and drama that is going on behind the scenes with the orcs (not every orc is happy with the current emperor D'vinn so they'll be happy to help you get rid of him) inside Crushbone Keep. If you don't like to do the Orc questline there's literally hundreds of quests in Greater Faydark to keep you occupied till you are 20+ and ready to leave the zone for ButcherBlock Mountains which has a major questline involving the Bugbears and how they managed to take over Kaladim (home of the dwarves) kicking the dwarves out of their home city. The quests cultimates with you and your adventuring party assulting Kaladim and driving the Bugbears out which is around level high 60-70+ quests.

The thing is Norrath is a world full of strife and almost every npc you met has some sort of trouble or is not happy with their lot in life so they'll be asking you to help them out with your wit or your sword.

there are also the epic questlines, one of these came with the original game and there was also one in every expansion. these quests are allways high level content and also involve hard raids for the game at the state when they were added to it.  So for more casual players the newest questline is often not completeable, but the ones from the older expansions are not that hard to complete if you have a guild that is willing to do these.

In the line of the original game you learned draconic language, and then worked for lord nagafen to get the prismatic dragon egs back. in the end you had to kill a big daragon (Darathar).

In Desert of flames the epic line involved a lot more quests and you learned a lot lore about a lost ciity and the fountain of life. Finally you had to enter the Foutain of life with a raid and destroy the undead beeings that came from it.

In KIngdom of Sky expansion the epic line was all about the famous Qeynos Claymore that was stolen. you learend a lot about the dragons that rule the Sky KIngdoms, and as final steps you had to enter deathtoll and kill the Undead Dragon Tarinax.

For EoF the epic quest line was added later, in this case it was about Soulfire the sword of Lucan D'leere. Togetehr with its sister sword the Qeynos Claymore the 2 make up the swords of destiny.  Soulfire was stolen too and brought to faydwer. In this questline you work initially for the Knights of Marr which want to make sure taht the sword does not get into the wrong hands. But in the end you work for Lucan and make sure he gets his sword back. The final step which this time is no integral part of the Questline involves killin Mayong Mistmore the vampire lord that is behind the theft of Soulfire and a lot other things that go on on Faydwar Continent.

Not sure if there is such a questline in RoK caus there will be epic weapon quests for every class, so these might replace teh regular epic questline this time.

These questlines brought you sometimes back to places you visited when you were lower level, also some of the NPC's taht you met during these lines make apearances in later quests again.
