The graphics arent that bad. A little less than EQ's graphics after their Shadows of Luclin expansion, and they are very scalable. Most things look nice without too many jaggies. They are working on an expansion now which will include a big graphics update.

This is currently my favorite MMOG. Its one of the only games in which soloing is just as easy as grouping. Grouping is only required for some of the harder quests, and possibly some dungeons if your not a high enough level. All skills in AC1 are passive, meaning training them allows you to perform whatever actions are related to it, and raising the skills increases your profinciency at it, kind of like Masteries.

The combat for melee and archers is the standard MMOG type. Although you are able to adjust the frequency of your hits and the damage of them with a Speed-Damage bar. Also you choose to attack low, medium, or high. For mages, it is completely different. Mages do not ever use melee combat. All their damage comes from their spells. War magic is the elemental and main weapon of the mage, Life magic is for healing, protection spells and conversion spells(stam to mana). Creature magic are for buffs and debuffs, and item magic is for buffs to weapons and armor as well as being used for Portal magic.

This game prolly has the most customability in MMOG out there except for mabey CoH. The creation customability is limited to your face, attributes and skills, but in game, armor and weapons are through the roof. Many different types of armor in most colors. Most armors can be wielded by anyone. Some require attribute, level or skill reqs. Weapons are either quest or loot generated. Loot generated being completely random. A Tachi(sword) could have anywhere from 4-8 to 12-23(about) damage on it. Although the higher damage weapons have skill reqs to wield.

There is 3 main crafting skills, Alchemy, Cooking and Fletching. Fletching being vital to any archer. There are 4 Tinkering trade skills that allow you to modify your equipment. This included raising the armor level and resistances on armor. Increasing the damage and speed on weapons, and also applying Imbues. Imbues are very difficult tinkers with low sucess rates but that give incredible bonuses. These include Armor Rending, Elemental Rendings, Critical Strike, and Crushing Blow, each doing a different thing and useful in different circumstances.

Those are most of the highlights of AC1, if you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Ive been playing it for about 5 years now and know the Ins and Outs of most of the game systems.

Mages are prolly the most powerful is most situations, but they are also the hardest to play. There isnt a free trial, although aftert they get the billing situated there might be one. They just inherited all the iblling from microsoft. the game doesnt cost much to get tho, like 10-20 bucks for a cd key.

If you are a 1v1 PvPer then AC is the game for you. If you like group PvPing then I suggest DAoC. I myself will be switching to WoW on release, mainly because of a combination of group PvP and 1v1.

The game itself is very easy to learn, and almost as easy to play. Leveling used to take a much longer time, but now there are buff bots. In short, a buff bot is a mage character that decides to use a 3rd party plugin on while he is not at the keyboard. This character buffs characters for free or for a small price. Buff Botting is completely legal, because you do not generate any xp while doing so. Being fully buffed you have the potential of a character several levels above you.

This game has by far the best guild system. A character may become a patron, and accquire other players to swear allegiance to him. The are called vassals. While you are a patron you may also be a vassal to another character. The patron that is not sworn to anyone and has strings of vassals under him is known as a monarch. Monarchs may purchase guild mansions (more on this later). Being in an allegiance in AC is different than in most games. In AC, when you generate XP, your patron gets XP as well, without deducting the XP that you are recieving.

Houses were added in the latest expansion pack, Dark Majesty. You may purchase a small apartment with a chest, if you only need a place to store you items. You have a limited number of hooks in your apartment that you may put furniture, paintings, or rewards you have found while hunting. A higher level player in need of more space may purchase a cottage or a villa. Cottages are like an apartment but much bigger, but still only have 1 chest. It is ideal for a character who likes a place to display his rewards. Villas are slightly bigger than cottages and have a portal to a small dungeon underground. The dungeon has no monsters, and is used for privacy and to hold the 3-4 chests. Then there is mansions. Only monarchs may purchase mansions. Anyone in their guild may recall to this mansion using a simple typed command. The mansion has a larger dungeon underneath it, exactly like the villa one except bigger. It has 5-6 chests. A mansion is very large and fun to decorate, usually having a room dedicated to having heads of the olthoi queen on it, ones that the followers of the allegiance worked hard for and wish to show them off to fellow guild-mates.

All in all, AC is a game that has the best gameplay out there. The graphics may not be up to date yet, but it is the most fun I have ever had in an MMO.

After the one time AC did have a free trial and the abuse that occurred to create mules etc for ranking, I do not forsee Turbine doing that again. Since players used it to inflate their rank rating.

Since they only ever did one data wipe, these rank mules were able to stay in place.

Unless turbine changes how the rank structuring applies, I do not think it will happen. I could be wrong. They may do it just before the expansion release hoping to draw new players.

Side note: A villa has two chests. However the bonus to a Villa is now allegiance members can recall to a monarchy villa the same as a mansion. Villa's are less costly to maintain. Basically a scaled down mansion as it is.

Mansions need to love to make them worthwhile.

  •   AC was my first ever major MMORPG I played (I started with Runescape but it is a minor MMORPG compared to AC and most others... though RS is still nice in its own little way.). I got into AC through the FREE 1 month trial they had. But that was roughly 2 years ago if memory serves me right. It was fun and NICE.

If AC still had a free trial I would definatly recommend trying it out! Unfortunatly they no longer have the Free Trial. Is AC worth paying the roughly total $50.oo (game box + 1 month subscription?)? It depends on how tight your budget is. Is fifty dollars (USA) going to put a major hole in your budget that you have to go 1 week without eating? If yes then pass by AC, keep saving your money, and wait for the rest of the new 4th Generation MMORPGs to release and get past their growing pains.

If your budget can handle it, then go ahead and check out AC. It is a far more Skill Based game than EQ which is a Level Based Game. There are very, very, few Skill Based MMORPGs out, or planned. Generally SBG (Skill Based Games) are better than LBG (Level Based Games). AC was finnished before EQ, but on purpose got released after EQ. (According to the massive coverstory, and MMORPG filled issue of Computer Game Magazine back in late 2002. The issue with AC2 on the cover.) AC got drowned in EQ's shadow because AC was never aggresivly advertised. But AC is still a fun game. The dungeons are still incredible, and easily match the dungeons of EQ, and even modern MMORPGs in terms of the mood.

Don't forget that the expansion pack is coming. That may turn the tides for AC bringing new players and old ones, but if it blows out I suspect they will lose a large chunk of their playerbase

Something you will have to decide for yourself. If playing a game only because you love "eye candy" then AC1 will not be for you.

However, if you enjoy a game because of the content, then sometimes we can over look the not as pretty graphics.

Turbine says they will be doing graphics upgrade, so this will make them appear prettier but will still not compete in terms of graphics with newer games.

I have played the games with beautiful graphics, unfortunately for me, that was all they had to offer and after a short time I left.
