All the guns of the same damage type (physical, EMP, laser, etc) share the same model. That means that all shotguns that deal physical damage look the same, but they're different from those that deal, say, Fire damage.
As for armors, there's more diversity here. Each armor type has different models for each part (helmet, gloves, etc), so if your concern is if everyone looks the same, then the answer is no. Or not too frequently.
Weapon list, these weapons have a consistend look, but can be upgrade so no weapon has to be the same as in stats but wil look the same as the following list shows. Dunno about planetside not played that other then a demo/trial long long ago.....

The version is indicated as the last part of the name, with the lowercase letter "v" followed by a single digit number, e.g. "v4" or "v9". The version is merely visual, it does not affect the stats of the armor, i.e. the"Reflective Armor Vest v2" has exactly the same stats as the "Reflective Armor Vest v3".
