Well I'm definately leaning towards fan boy for this new game I've been playing for several weeks. The game is metin2. It is currently rated a 7.0 on the gameslist. This game is f2p which I know most people don't like. Just to let you guys know where I'm coming from. I've been playing mmo's for 10 years now. I started with a game on AOL called Legends of Kesmai. The longest run I've had on any game was DAOC which I played on and off for 5 years.
I've played most of the f2p on mmorpg.com. Some I'd call more of a beta because the games sucked so much I couldn't stand them. I would venture to say Metin2 is the best f2p game that I've played.
Whats so good about it you ask?
First, PVP. You have duels, guild wars (which your guild gets ranked), also OPEN pvp vs other nations. In metin2 there are 3 nations. You can walk to any other nation and you can pvp any opposing nation member at any time without penalty. Also, no zone is restricted. You can walk right into an opposing nations capital city and start slaughtering other players. Pretty cool huh?
2nd, guilds can buy land and build castles. I like that
3rd, the grind isn't bad at all for an asian F2P game. Max lvl is 99 and I'm sitting at 43 after two weeks. Highest lvl in the game is 71 atm.
4th, you can ride a horse at lvl 25, your horse also has lvls that you can advance in through quests. At lvl 10 your horse gets armor and you can fight using basic attacks on the horse. at lvl 20 you can use skills on the horse.
5th, Good Graphics, graphics aren't cutting edge dx10 but they're very good. Game supports all resolutions and the graphics are better than most games out there.
6th, open ended statistical and skill development. You get to CHOOSE the stats you want to raise, also you choose the skills you which to train in. Alot of MMO's if you are say lvl 25 you are a carbon copy of another lvl 25 of the same class. Not in Metin2. You can be completely different.
7th, lots of ways to improve your character via mastering skills and item enhancement. Once you get your skills to a certain lvl you have to read skill books to continue to advance them , these skill books have chances at failure therefore it isn't easy to advance. Also, there is alchemy , mining , etc in the game.
8th, this is going to be my last point but not the least. The community is great. One of the best I've seen really.
Okay I'm done with my fanboi rant. I'm a fickle gamer so I'm sure not everyone will share my opinion. That's okay though, I just figured I'd throw in my support for this relatively small title.

After what the publisher did to Ryzom, I'd be scared to play it. Gameforge clearly doesn't care about their customers, expect them to drop it without a word.
I'm not sure what they did with Ryzom. I'm guessing they shut down their servers because of lack of players / funding. Unfortunately, these publishers are businesses and if they're not making money the game can't stay around. It does take money to have GM's and issue patches and host servers. I think we as players sometimes forget this.
Sounds great. Can you tell more about the comunity? Numbers, age, nations, diversity?
Heh Spike,
Thanks for the straight goods review, I think I'll try it out.
Are the character classes fairly balanced?
G4Box Inc is running the US version of Metin2, and as far as I'm aware they have nothing to do with Ryzom.
And I also love Metin2, I play it all the time when I can. This month is great as its double exp, drops and gold
If so, I suggest you play the http://www.metin2.us version and stay away from http://www.metin-2.com
This game is actually pretty decent...a bit dated in some respects...but its fun none the less.
Think Dynasty Warriors MMO style with Dreamcast graphics.
This game gets my recommendation, every bored mmo player should at least try this game. Its one of those games you can jump into for 10min or a a few hours and still have fun.
The game is only 500mb~ , so takes like 10min to jump into the game....HUGE plus on its side.

PS: http://www.metin2.us is the one I play on.
ANY company will drop a game if it no longer makes sense to keep it on, whether they are gameforge, g4box or g9box or g89437593485box.
having said that metin-2.com is hosted in the uk, metin2.us is in the US. play whichever makes more sense to you.
I'm not opposed to companies taking business decisions. But you could handle it better than Gameforge. If you do have a choice between two hosts for a game, don't choose the lesser one.
I think the CEO of Gameforge usually breaks up from relationships by stop calling the girl. That's how he handled Ryzom.
One person asked if the classes are fairly balanced.
There are 4 classes and two different professions within each class. You pick the profession at lvl 5. Once you pick the profession it gives you a set of skills. You train them in any order of your choosing. So here are the classes
Warrior >>>Aharan (offensive type) or Partisan (defensive type)
Mage >>>forget what they're called but theres a healer spec and a mage spec
Assassin >>>>>> hunter (bow spec) >>>>>or assassin (dagger spec)
Sura >>>>>>black magic (probably best pvp class) or mirage
Warriors and Suras are the most popular and probably most powerful classes. Followed my Assassins and then lastly mages. Mages in this game aren't that great. Every class has it's own strength and weakness. Some classes are definately roll players.
Hope that helps.
Metin 2 isnt too bad.
Its less boring than prerty much all other MMOs of its type because the combat is action based.
If you're in to the Diablo 2 style MMOs then give Metin 2 a try.
Is it a severe grindfest,or does it have a good XP rate?
Normally its a pretty big grinder. But for the month of October (which may be extended) they are having a "Thanksgiving" celebration with the game running on 2x exp. 2x gold, 2x drop/loot rates. So it isn't horribly bad right now.
After this is over however, the grind can be pretty bad. If you group up, it isn't as bad obviously. And of course if you are so inclined you can buy items from the item shop that help with exp. rates.
Don't fprget to put thgonace in the rplayer who refered you (if you know) spot
the grind isn't bad. I've been playing 2 weeks and I'm lvl 48. Max lvl is 99 and the highest lvl in the whole game is 71. That and I work a full time job and am pretty busy. So the grind isn't that bad but eventually yes it gets challenging like MMO's should.
sounds nice, hope its okay i ask abit just to be 100% sure
about the guild war's can you declare aginst another guild off your own nation?
can you attack player's off your own nation, and what are the pentalties for it?
what happens when another player off your own nation kills you?
what happens when it's a guild your at war with?
Sure. More questions are not a problem.
Basically, the game has a system called HKP (Hostile killer points) points. When you kill pve monsters or players from opposing nations you get positive points. This in turn will give you positive titles that end up showing next to your name. Titles i.e Worthy, Righteous, Noble, Admirable. When you pvp someone from your own nation you lose ALOT of these points. When you get negative HKP points you receive negative titles. i.e. Deparado, Criminal, Felon etc. When you have a negative title first other players can kill you without penalty. For example if I see someone with a negative title I PK them on the spot. 2ndly if you're lvl 50+ and have a negative title you will lose items when you die. So the game has a system in place to dissuade players from killing their own nation members.
Okay so secondly about guild wars. You can declare war with any guild in any nation. If the other guild accepts the war all get members get a scroll with the option to join the war. If you choose to join the war you are teleported to a seperate map. First guild to get 100kills wins the war. Your guild also gets ranked vs other guilds on its win/loss rate at guild wars.
Hope that answers your questions.
thanks hope its okay i ask some more
so that seperate map pvp for guilds will be the only place i can kill my own nation people without pentalties?
is it possiebel to attack other guild's castle's or city's they build?
can i group and talk to other players from other nations?
okay so.
You can only pvp people from your own nation without penalty in a Duel or guildwar. Duel basically two players accept and you can have a fight. If a player does attack you first trying to pk you their name turns purple and you can kill them without penalty.
Also, at this time I don't believe you can invade other guilds castles/cities.
Also, you cannot group with players from other nations. You can however speak via an item called a language ring. You put it on and it lets you understand the other nations language. Also, there are alphabet books that drop for every letter of the alphabet. So you have to pass all the letters and then you can understand the language permanately.
i love the game i've played it for a couple weeks now if you love PvP make a sura or warrior they are flatout sick in PvP mages and rouges are pretty cool in parties and since mages can heal they're loved by all
After looking at the site and reading around, I see a few things that make me uneasy.
Gaming appearance reminds me of a mix between Rappelz and Supreme Destiny. I see alot of people saying the company staff is very small and only work office hours so when the game goes down at night, you're without a game until atleast the next day. I also see alot of people complaining about the poor design of the mages and how heal and buff spells have horrible cooldown time and makes the spells useless for parties. Seems that when the exp and drop events are not going on, the drop rate is pretty crappy. I also saw that some people are ruining the pvp aspect of the game which is a bad thing to see in any game. Not to mention the forum mods are not near as professional as mods in other games.
Yes you can upgrade items pretty easily and you can have horses which do help. You can mine and fish, though fishing is just completely frustrating. They do have an idea of giving quests on a pretty good regular basis, but if you can't use a horse yet, it takes forever to run from land to land to where you need to go for them. Overall it's just another grinder with a few more quests.
So is this thread just for discussion or for the "hype" like described here
bbs.metin2.us:8080/viewthread.php
I did try metin2 on europe servers but was bored already after lvl 9, only grind to see and boring quests. The game seems to be outdated and really nothing new features. PvP concept seems to be cool, since open pvp devided into factions is really nice.
Okay so Kittie from your post I take it you read the forums and looked for every negative thing you could possibly find. I'm not going to try to change your mind because like I stated in my original post gamers are fickle. Newsflash! This game isn't perfect. It does have some negatives. It doesn't have a 24 hour dedicated staff. That being said when I played DAOC there have been times when the servers have went down for days at a time even with a dedicated staff.
I like the game personally. In my opinion it's the best F2P on the market. I've tried pretty much all of them. My character name is Tinx in the game. I did make the post on the metin2 forums requesting players to hype the game. The intention here is to discuss and promote interest for the game. I don't see anything wrong with a gamer expressing interest and support for a small f2p title.
Open PvP which is nice... but does it just turn into who can pop the most pots?

Actually it is a great game, the only thing I found that really sucks is (as of now at least) theres is no customization to speak of, everyone looks the same. Hopefully that will change down the line as it is only beta, and i hear they are getting additions very soon like male mages and assassins, female suras etc).
