We've all played MMORPG's here, and we've all seen the way females are constantly hit on and subjected to a barrage of non stop sexual innuendo in them. It's not the type of behavior I ever participate in myself, but a great number of male players in MMORPGs do. So I can't blame real life females one bit for sometimes wanting to opt out and play male characters themselves. But lets face facts. If you are a male and you play a female character in a MMORPG it's saying a lot more about you than you're simply tired of looking at an animated male rear end, or that you like to roleplay. To put up with that kind of never ending sexual vibe from other males there must be something about you that enjoys it. I'm not completely certain that would be homosexuality, but it sure is something that seems more than slightly weird to me. Another thing you she-males should consider is how awkward it can make roleplaying for many of the rest of us. My idea of roleplaying might include very occasionally wanting to make a courteous bow, open a door, or perform a gallant act for a female (if I'm confident that the gesture would be well received). But thinking I'm probably doing that for some drag queen only ruins it for me. So thank you very much guys for affecting my right to make a free choice.
I always create female avatars, I truly am not interested in staring at a gay-porn over-muscled man-butt all the time I am playing. I have had to deal with stalkers, and players who push the sexist innuendo constantly, but they are not as common as you are saying.. at least in a mature community game anyway.
One of the funniest occasions of my my gaming past was when I was teamed with one guy, and his Guildie started talking about my toon in their guild chat. The guy I was teamed with relayed the chat to me, and getting me to lead the ignorant guy on as this other guy was calling on their guild to come and check out the hot chick still have the screenies
The only difficulty it creates for me, when I know a female toon has a male player behind it, is what gender pronoun to use when referring to it to a third person. The rule I use is that if the third person knows the player, then I can refer to it as the male, but if I dont know if the 3rd person knows, then I refer to them as the female - as is visible ingame.
As for ruining your RP.. well RP is something you do for yourself basically, its as much a tool for displaying your uberness as any combat mastery. Good RP can pwn everyone who sees it (in your own mind) so what you need to sort out for yourself is whether you are going to do it hardcore, or casual.
You always have the right to make a choice, however constraints affecting the choice are NEVER under your control, so FREE choice is a myth.

I only play a girl char if there are gender restricted classes. For instance in 2moons you can't be a guy magician so you have to pick a girl. Also like in Guildwars for example the male Mesmers and paragons look really gay I would rather make a female mesmer and paragon
It's a bad habit, I guess. It started in the 80s, when I would play a yellow ball-thing with a voracious appetite. I'm not really a "Pac Man" in real life, but the game didn't give me any other options. Then when the sequel came out, I played a female version of that ball-creature, called a "Ms. Pac Man." It's not a choice I made; it was the only character available to play - you either played Ms. Pac Man, or you took your quarters and went home.
I guess I just got this silly idea in my head that my character was just imaginary, not some representation of my sexuality. This was further reinforced by books like "Carrie," written by a male author but with a female main character. I should have seen that "Carrie" was a cry for help, an expression of Stephen King's secret sexual desires, but to me it was just a fun horror story.
Now I know I was wrong. Thank you for setting me straight. I won't play any more female characters, or read any books with female characters, or watch any TV shows with female characters in them. If I ever play any more MMORPGs, I'll only play male human characters living in the 21st century, and they'll all have my real name, and they won't do anything I can't do. No more magic spells, or swinging a sword bigger than a Buick.

Anyways, I've had friends that played female characters. And frankly I don't give a rats ass. I always assume its a guy playing anyways. I don't play mmo's to meet girls, I play them because I'm a gamer. Only one place to meet real girls, it's called outside. Although I must admit I have met some girls while playing and to tell you the truth there are hot girls playing games, they just don't have a giant sign over their head saying "HOT GIRL HERE" and the ones that do have that sign are dudes! So stop trying to cyber with every female toon you come across! Play the game eventually you'll run into that real female toon and you can live out your toon fantasy with a real girl on the other end.

this mostly applies to guys playing as girls. why do you do it? do you get excited from looking at a girl character? does it make you happy inside? are you that pathetic in real life that you have to amount to this? i dont know about you guys but i like the gender i am and i like to potray that when i am online. some would say looking at a guys butt is gay. i dont know what your doing but i actually "play" the game, i dont generally focus on the guys butt while im playin. i was just wondering why you all do this.

I am a girl and play as a female just because I liked the look of her, however I almost made a male character first because I thought he looked good. I'm not worried if guys/girls try to hit on me... If in the rares case that they do so, I'll show them where the door is... ^^ I play FFXI, and Mithra can only be Female and Galka can only be Male. So will you dis them also? Kersan, I'm comfortable occasionally roleplaying most types of storylines with any type of player. But no. I'm not comfortable whatsoever with roleplaying male/female roles with another man. Call me hung up, a latent gay myself, or whatever. But I suspect I'm not the only one.
Am not going to call you latently homosexual because you personally find it uncomfortable. However I do think that you are taking it way too seriously. I really don't see why you should feel uncomfortable showing the extra gallantry (you originally mentioned opening doors or bowing for a female character) no matter what the gender of the actual player....I just don't get why that would bother you Whats wrong with being courteous or even opeing doors for other guys???

None of the female gamers I know would be particularly impressed by that kind of 'rp'. Incidentally, almost all the female gamers I know play male characters (maybe to avoid that sort of 'rp'!). I am curious - does females playing males also make you uncomfortable? Would occasionally rp-ing "male/male roles" (maybe sword brothers fighting back to back, drinking games or whatever you define as male/male roles as opposed to the male/female roles you mention) only to find the 'male' was in fact a female in real life make you as uncomfortable?

I play male and female chars in mmo. I play a female night elf in wow mainly because the males look like crap and I loved shadowmeld. Also, the armor for the females are, in my opinion, a lot better looking then the males. I’m 30 years old and know exactly what I am into and what I am not. I play both sides not because I am "confused" but because I like how the chars look. I don’t roleplay as a girl and if anyone says or does anything at all that I think they are doing because they think I am a girl then I let them know right away that I’m a dude and that they really need to get a grip on reality. If you are a guy who is roleplaying as a girl then no matter what you really need to have your head checked out. Because no matter what your reasons are it will never sound good. Now if you are one of these guys who think just because a guy is playing a female char that that makes them gay, a cross dresser, or what ever needs to remember one thing. IT’S A GAME! Playing a female char doesn’t mean crap unless you make it mean something. I good number of people have a good grip on reality and don’t worry one way or another about what sex char they play. How many people played Tomb Raider, Dino Crisis, etc. Or does that not count since the only way you could play it was to play a girl?
On COV I played a corrupter (healer variant) who was a body builder and ran around in speedos. The men in the game would usually shout "my eyes, my eyes!!!" In COH I played a female defender who once again only had minimal clothing on. Of course there I got "damn you is hot!!"
Clearly there is a large prejudice against men in speedos running around. When will you people learn to not be prejudice against body building corrupters who prefer speedos as a clothing choice?

I choose my characters this way:
1) What class do I want to play?
2) How would that class connect to my favorite book series?
3) Is that character a male or female / or is that group mostly males/females?
4) What name(s) would I use?
I have 8 characters in the games I play 4 male and 4 female...not because I am an equal opportunity player, but because that is just how things turned out. My main character's name is Elaine Aes Sedai, that was my log in name on the vent server I am on, everyone calls me Elaine. I dont care and I have not had anyone ask me, "Hey what else can I call you...I dont feel comfortable calling you a female name." Just have fun playing whatever game you play...don't worry about other peoples choices unless it directly effects you.

I would like to first point out to those of you who say, or have said, that the choices of armor on certain female toons "look better" then the armor choices on male toons. Most males would be biased I would imagine, to think that most armor choices (where women are wearing basically nothing) would appeal more to the male population but yet not be deemed as "sexy" would be ludicrous. The developers create fantasty armor to accentuate the strong points of the female anatomy. Whether many men would like to believe this or not, female combat garb would not consist of scantily placed armor pieces.
Everyone wants an "attractive" character so to speak. (or the majority at least) A developer creates this armor under their own accord. Men are made to look surly, women are created to look dainty. Now before everyone jumps on my back about this, I know there are some armors that do not have a distinct dainty look to them, but for the most part ninety percent of popular games have revealing armor for women.
Aside from, on the topic of what sex someone *should* choose, or why someone *would* choose a particular sex, is strictly up to the subscriber. Foremost when you see a girl toon in game, many would automatically beleive that toon to be a female. It's not wrong to think this, and especially people who are not more familiar with MMO's may make an embarrassing mistake. Many times when speaking about a character in groups I've comment "she" when the player was a "he", and have been corrected more then a few times. I would just like to point out to those who DO play female toons that you shouldn't expect everyone to automatically think you to be male when playing a female toon.
Now as for harrassment. Women will be harrassed whether they are in game or not. Men are ridiculous creatures. The only difference between in game and out of game is that sometimes when a woman receives a cat call in-game, it may be a man instead.
Frankly, I prefer to stick to my own gender if it's possible. The only game I've ever made a female character in was Guild Wars, and that was because the guy warriors were fat, and I can't stand to play bulky characters. I also made a female Necromancer because the way the male ones ran got kind of annoying.
Point is, sometimes in games with character models like that, sometimes it's best to play as another gender if the models annoy you that badly. (which they did, and if ANY of you want to call me a pervert for whatever reason, I'll be happy to argue on that subject another time) There isn't necessarily anything "sexually appealing" about it. It's a GAME, if you want sex appeal, then leave us mmo players out of it. I don't really see the point in getting in a big moral debate over something silly like this, so I'll stop now.

I had a level 20 opifex female in Anarchy Online.A player whom i had never grouped with nor even met before gives me 5 million credits.His reason for doing this was:"Because your cute."

Its interesting to say the least to what men will do to impress the "ladies" in a mmo.I think its different in any mmo.The more action oriented(CoH/CoV as an example) the less you will see typical male behavior.I think it is because it is less item oriented than say EQ2 or even WoW.The item becomes a bartering item for "cyber".

Ive never understood cybering either and ive always been a bit repulsed by it.If i give anything away its because i dont need it anymore and a guildmate does end of story.

If your playing a female toon I think you would expect everyone to refer to you as a "she" otherwise it would be confusing. Because of the roleplaying aspect of the game for all in-game intents and purposes if you are playing a girl, you are a girl.
BTW for a while I played one half of dedicated twin female characters with my real-life wife. That was fun!

I was asked to accompany another player to a fountain, strip down to my panties and dance with them. Being a WoW Night elf did not hurt as they are the best dancers in the game. (Human females dance a little dorky if you ask me.) At the end of the encounter I was showered with gifts. Boy did I feel special! Now if the other character had asked, I would of told the truth regarding my RL gender.

Would occasionally rp-ing "male/male roles" (maybe sword brothers fighting back to back, drinking games or whatever you define as male/male roles as opposed to the male/female roles you mention) only to find the 'male' was in fact a female in real life make you as uncomfortable?

On COV I played a corrupter (healer variant) who was a body builder and ran around in speedos. The men in the game would usually shout "my eyes, my eyes!!!" In COH I played a female defender who once again only had minimal clothing on. Of course there I got "damn you is hot!!"
Clearly there is a large prejudice against men in speedos running around. When will you people learn to not be prejudice against body building corrupters who prefer speedos as a clothing choice?

Ok lets imagine that every male gamer made a male char and females the same. Could you imagine how ridiculous the MMO world would be, most chars would be male and the female ones would be treated like Queens.
1.) There is nothing wrong creating a female char.
2.) There is something definitely wrong with creating a female char and when asked the $1,000,000 question to reply "yes."

I choose my characters this way:
1) What class do I want to play?
2) How would that class connect to my favorite book series?
3) Is that character a male or female / or is that group mostly males/females?
4) What name(s) would I use?
I have 8 characters in the games I play 4 male and 4 female...not because I am an equal opportunity player, but because that is just how things turned out. My main character's name is Elaine Aes Sedai, that was my log in name on the vent server I am on, everyone calls me Elaine. I dont care and I have not had anyone ask me, "Hey what else can I call you...I dont feel comfortable calling you a female name." Just have fun playing whatever game you play...don't worry about other peoples choices unless it directly effects you.

The prevailing feeling is that in a game there is no requirement to play your gender in a MMO and it has no bearing on if you'd really like to be the opposite gender in real life or not. If I play a female in a 3rd person MMO it is because I like how they (females) look and I like the perspective (following along from behind).
If someone asks, I gladly disclose this fact. A recent poll I participated in seemed to indicate that the only reason to disclose your real gender is if someone online seems to develop a romantic or friendly interest in you. It would only be fair to disclose this info. I also have a friend who is a girl who sometimes plays male characters. While there may be exceptions, I think in most cases there is no significant reason for playing a boy vs a girl, any more than there is for playing an elf or the undead. After all it is "role playing".

I would like to first point out to those of you who say, or have said, that the choices of armor on certain female toons "look better" then the armor choices on male toons. Most males would be biased I would imagine, to think that most armor choices (where women are wearing basically nothing) would appeal more to the male population but yet not be deemed as "sexy" would be ludicrous. The developers create fantasty armor to accentuate the strong points of the female anatomy. Whether many men would like to believe this or not, female combat garb would not consist of scantily placed armor pieces.
Everyone wants an "attractive" character so to speak. (or the majority at least) A developer creates this armor under their own accord. Men are made to look surly, women are created to look dainty. Now before everyone jumps on my back about this, I know there are some armors that do not have a distinct dainty look to them, but for the most part ninety percent of popular games have revealing armor for women.
Aside from, on the topic of what sex someone *should* choose, or why someone *would* choose a particular sex, is strictly up to the subscriber. Foremost when you see a girl toon in game, many would automatically beleive that toon to be a female. It's not wrong to think this, and especially people who are not more familiar with MMO's may make an embarrassing mistake. Many times when speaking about a character in groups I've comment "she" when the player was a "he", and have been corrected more then a few times. I would just like to point out to those who DO play female toons that you shouldn't expect everyone to automatically think you to be male when playing a female toon.
Now as for harrassment. Women will be harrassed whether they are in game or not. Men are ridiculous creatures. The only difference between in game and out of game is that sometimes when a woman receives a cat call in-game, it may be a man instead.
Frankly, I prefer to stick to my own gender if it's possible. The only game I've ever made a female character in was Guild Wars, and that was because the guy warriors were fat, and I can't stand to play bulky characters. I also made a female Necromancer because the way the male ones ran got kind of annoying.
Point is, sometimes in games with character models like that, sometimes it's best to play as another gender if the models annoy you that badly. (which they did, and if ANY of you want to call me a pervert for whatever reason, I'll be happy to argue on that subject another time) There isn't necessarily anything "sexually appealing" about it. It's a GAME, if you want sex appeal, then leave us mmo players out of it. I don't really see the point in getting in a big moral debate over something silly like this, so I'll stop now.

I have in the past taken advantage of this by playing female characters.
I had a level 20 opifex female in Anarchy Online.A player whom i had never grouped with nor even met before gives me 5 million credits.His reason for doing this was:"Because your cute."
Pathetic right?
You know what i did with that 5 million credits?Transfered it to my MALE opifex fixer.
Try playing a female character.Not just play it but play it in a stereotypical manner and see what happens.I guarantee you that the "men" will trip over themselves to give away credits,gold armor and weapons in the hope that they can "cyber" with you.
Personally i think it is funny.
Its interesting to say the least to what men will do to impress the "ladies" in a mmo.I think its different in any mmo.The more action oriented(CoH/CoV as an example) the less you will see typical male behavior.I think it is because it is less item oriented than say EQ2 or even WoW.The item becomes a bartering item for "cyber".
If men were not pigs we would see less of this behaviour.Its a fact.

I suppose you have a point in saying "All men are pigs", but didn't mention that some have the moral strength to control and hide it.
Honestly, it is pretty funny to see how stupid they can be though. I mean, they're giving away money for....a bunch of sex words typed out on a screen...Apparently, someones desparate.
I have NEVER given anything to another character on the basis of gender. Never. The whole cybering thing is total bullshit.
I might have to take your advice though, Opticaleye, I could always have more money and items in my games....

If your playing a female toon I think you would expect everyone to refer to you as a "she" otherwise it would be confusing. Because of the roleplaying aspect of the game for all in-game intents and purposes if you are playing a girl, you are a girl.
BTW for a while I played one half of dedicated twin female characters with my real-life wife. That was fun!

I was asked to accompany another player to a fountain, strip down to my panties and dance with them. Being a WoW Night elf did not hurt as they are the best dancers in the game. (Human females dance a little dorky if you ask me.) At the end of the encounter I was showered with gifts. Boy did I feel special! Now if the other character had asked, I would of told the truth regarding my RL gender.

I go with whatever looks better in the armor for that race/class. Or in the case of CoX I got with what fits the concept I’m going with better.
The character is not someone I pretend to be but something I’m going to watch, so I can go either way.
