1. Define "better" ? CoV tends to me more solo-friendly and the progression in Rogue Isles is easier, none of the having contacts all over the city like in CoH. However, if you enjoy teaming CoH really shines when you're on a team. Plus early on in Atlas many players form sewer teams at lvl 2+ so in about an hour your level 7ish.
2. Soloing really depends on your AT and powersets. Scrappers and Masterminds are probably the best soloers. Controllers can't solo well at all until much higher level. Empathy powerset is going to be great in groups, but is virtually useless alone.
3. How it has improved is hard to say since we don't know when you quit. They added crafting with the Invention system in Issue 9, any player level 10+ can do the tutorial in Steel Canyon (heroes) or Cap Au (villains). Before that Issue 8 revamped Faultline, making it a 15-25 zone with trainers and new story arcs, plus no more falling in a pit and being stuck if you can't fly/jump out they have elevators marked on the map that will take you back up top. Current Issue 10 is the Rikti invasion that although is technically over, can be triggered whenever someone completes the new TF.
4. Population is fine. NCSoft actually reported an increase in subscriptions this year. Surely not anywhere near the millions of subs of That Other Game, but turning a nice profit.
5. Game is very casual friendly. Typically if you have 20-30mins you can do a mission by yourself. Again how fast you can go through missions depends on your AT and powersets. Plus if you get stuck on a mission they added a "drop mission" feature, basically once per 7 days per character you can drop a mission and get he full xp/inf reward as if you completed it normally. Nice to have for a mission you're having trouble with solo and either can't or won't get a team for.
6. Server suggestions is hard to say. Freedom tends to have higher pops than the others. I play on both Infinity and Freedom myself. As for SG just try to find one that fits with your playstyle, be polite and don't beg. As a SG leader myself I hate it when the new guy joins and then wants free stuff, powerleveling, etc.
1) I'd buy the Good Vs Evil version, so you get both games at once, then try them out and see what you like. If you have only played CoH, CoV might be a nice change of pace (although its system specs are a bit higher).
2) You can solo pretty easily - MM / Brute in CoV or Scrapper / Tanker in CoH. Grouping is probably an easier and more fun way to level up.
3) It's been said, but: new crafting system, new zones, more max lvl content, repeatable missions through radio / newspaper missions, etc. Also, server switching and character renaming are just being introduced and the Halloween event is being tested on the Test server.
4) About 154k, iirc. It's not hard to find a group most of the time (and I play in off-peak hours).
5) CoH/V is an excellent casual game. You can easily run a mission or two in an hour, get some xp and inf and advance your character.
6) Virtue and Freedom are generally the most populated. Take a look at the official CoH/V forums and see what super / villain groups are recruting and whether or not their requirements / philosophy are acceptable to you.
