IF all humans were to die out

Imagine this...

A tragedy sweeps the Earth and kills every last Human but only kills the Humans every other species survives.

Which species of animal do you think would become the most dominant? I once read in a newspaper that it would be the rat which is kinda hard to belive.

I'm really not sure which animal would become most dominant but i am extremly interested on what everyone else thinks.

After you've thought about which animal you think would be most dominant please post why you think that particular animal would be most dominant.

Maybe Dolphins?  Apparently they are very close to Human intelligence, and I'm sure I've heard some debate they are AS intelligent as us.  It would be nice to think so anyway, I really do like Dolphins. =)

Rabbits obviously, they would probably be the cause our destruction as well.  I've seen them looking at me.  They have very evil eyes and one even attacked me once.  It went straight for my throat.  Don't trust them they are always plotting something.

Ah yes, bunnies are evil....  They out number us 1 billion to one!

Probably one of the other primates, they are fairly close to us on the evolutional ladder.

If you do not count the US people whose closest relative seems to be the hippo. ( sorry, I had to. )

Dolphins is another good guess as someone pointed out as they seem to have an at least semi developed language, wich is the first step to intelligence.

i honestly dont know but i would probably say dogs, dont know why i guess there so smart and theyre already used to being with the dominant species it probably wouldnt be that hard to take over.

Insects. They have already outlasted most species on this planet. They will probably do it for many years to come. I bet they are the last ones to die out if all life should die out on this planet.

The Monkies because we are starting to put them through High School.  However, they should really learn the language if they expect to live in this country.

dying out last and becoming a dominant species are quite different matters. The insect body is unsuited for large sizes, an ant for instance more than a foot long would quickly suffocate.

As to the dolphin, not in their present form. Intelligence is not enough, the path to dominance through brains that our species took requires the ability to use tools and ultimately just as importantly, fire. Both are denied them while having flippers and living in water. I'm not saying it can't happen, but its easier for a presently land dwelling creature to evolve a more complex brain than for one to radically change environments.

Rats and similar rodents would be decent candidates, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Assuming whatever calamity that wiped us out didn't get them, our cousin Apes are first at bat, particularly the Bonobo, Chimpanzee, and Orangutan, roughly in that order. If not them, I'd be looking at the pack oriented creatures, primarily the great cats, but also wolves to a lesser degree.

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

Was supposed to be a plague(or whatever the cod was) that killed only humans, all other animals survived, and imo, rats would be the ones to become dominant, they have a very similar brain to the human brain-it actually looks almost identical minus the size of it, they are very, very abundant all over the world, and are vicious little suckers. Also note that they are a whole lot smarter then people seem to give them credit for, wild rats and lab rats are very different..just like a caveman and a office man are different

If all humans would die for a catastrophe?

    1) Peace on earth at last.

    2) There will be no dominant species, we are freaks of nature, no other species has the same potential of a human being.

    3) Rats........they will all die, the only reason they are so many is because they eat our shit, once we die they die too. The paper was talking bullshit.

    4) The Aliens will finally land to colonize the earth, after those annoying funny looking beings are wiped out of the planet..........

Cockroaches. As they say in Heroes: "If there is a God, he's a cockroach". So obviously God decided to wipe out humans to allow all cockroaches to take control of the world.

Cockroaches, don't you know they can survive radiation?

Quoting people doesn't make you clever, in fact, it makes you all the more stupid for not bothering to read the quotes you post in the first place.

Ya, I'd say insects too. The beetle would probably dominate. And I can see where rats fit in; they produce like crazy and can survive in almost any situation.

Every species but humans tends to live in balance with its surroundings. If humans died, I don't any pre-existing species would step up and take our place.

So did we, a very long time ago. There is absolutely nothing keeping another animal species from taking that same step members of the Homo genus did, the step from being controlled by one's environment to controlling it, assuming of course the judeo-christian god, some other deity type power, or other factors don't step in.

Yes yes yes, and they can even restart their own heart (well, their equivalent of one at least) assuming the damage that stopped it isn't too severe. However, this is not really on topic. The topic was that if humans and only humans died out what if anything would take our place. The topic was not which creature would survive a nuclear holocaust.

    1) The peace of the dead is not truly peace. Besides, this planet never was particularly peaceful even before we stepped it up a few notches.

    2) wrong, various dinosaur species for example were damned close to achieving some of the same milestones as we did before they all died out. There is even some (very, very circumstancial) evidence that one particular species had semi advanced communication. There are plenty of species today that hold the same potential we do, if a void is created... who knows for certain what might happen.

    3) rats were around for a hell of a lot longer than we were. lab rats would likely die out, and house rats would face major... thinnings of the herd so to speak, but there is no way in hell a minor event like our demise is going to cause their extinction.

    4) Gah! how did you find out?... Um, I mean, what the hell are you talking about?

If you are going at that angle, why not the Apes like I mentioned? The brains are almost identical, and not in significant miniature. Hell, the Bonobo is 98% identical to our physical composition, with the Chimp at 97%.

Or how about any of the hundreds of other species that have already achieved the dual hemispheric brain type, are significantly higher up the food chain, and are as smart or smarter than almost any rat at least in terms of raw intelligence

They would see an "advanced" race killing each other for really really stupid reasons.

Not really, nuclear bombs are nearly outdated these days, we are damned close to achieving much more effective weaponry.

In terms of simply killing the enemy, genetic alteration of viruses is under full swing. Much of this is perfectly legitimate and harmless work, viruses with their genetic altering capabilities are prime candidates for treating various diseases such as cancer and for radically enhancing various functions of the body. But anyone who thinks that this is the only side of the coin is foolish at best. Imagine this, a stealth plane on a high altitude approach drops a fairly small canister over a major city during peak traffic times. This canister breaks apart, spreading hundreds of small containers over an extremely wide range. These, maybe a few hundred feet above the city, begin releasing droplets. A pedestrian might notice a small drop of rain splash onto the sidewalk, but takes no further notice as the virus begins to enter the air and his lungs. The incubation period might be only a few days, it might be a several months, it all depends on how wide of an area the attacker wishes to affect. Either way, no one is likely to notice as the initially infected spread the disease to any and all they come in contact with. Death can come swiftly, or very slowly but inevitabley, again it depends on the intended affect. For instance, it could take a cue from the E Bola virus, who's victims are bleeding from every single orifice of their body as their tissues melt and dissolve. Mass panic will ensue, as those infected but not yet showing symptoms flee, infecting even more. A nation could affectively eliminate entire continents this way, even if there are a fair number of survivors, no government can truly withstand such a crisis. Best of all, an attack like this leaves the facilities and equipment intact, perfectly available and ready for the new ruling bodies to move in, colonize, and take over. And no, getting one's own country infected is not necessarily an issue. A government could easily allow a "neutered" version of the attacking virus to spread through their own populace, effectively rendering them immune in addition to whatever quarantine measures are taken. This is not science fiction, it is science fact. Every single facet of this scenario is quite possible, much of it already exists in nature, the only challenge is in bringing it together.

In terms of sheer destructive power, we are now able to create antimatter. A substance so physically opposed to normal matter that merely touching molecules of each type together will create a very, very powerful release of nearly pure energy. Just as a frame of reference, nuclear fusion bombs achieve a mass to energy conversion of 3-7% depending on the type. An antimatter bomb would achieve a 100% conversion, merely a pound of the stuff would be enough for a 2.5 megaton explosion. Worst of all, the measures we have in place to detect bombs and other hazardous materials are useless in this case. A terrorist could carry an antimatter bomb the size and shape of a wallet. The casing and magnetics could easily be made out of nonmettalic materials, and the antimatter itself would show up like Hydrogen, or some other non remarkable element. Detonation wouldn't be a problem requiring any particular training either, just turn off/nullify one of the magnets keeping the material from touching any normal matter. Its only a matter of time before we begin creating the stuff in significant quantities, and again only a matter of time before people begin getting their hands on it, for legitimate and otherwise reasons.

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

No other species will dominate humans are an anomaly of nature. If we were wiped out everything would return to "normal". Then again we are one of the most adapting and hard to kill species on earth so having us wiped while everything else remains the same is extremely unlikely.

An uncontrolled engineered virus designed to target specific sequences of DNA would do the trick handily.

As for the rest, this is conciet at its worst. We are not an anomaly of nature, simply the ultimate, though not final, result of the natural processes of evolution. Given enough time, a species will inevitably begin controlling its environment.

I bet that even if we all die out the climate will continue to change.  Species will continue to die out and new ones will eventually replace them.  Natural disasters will still happen at varying rates.  I couldn't say which species would be dominant but I can guarantee one thing...the world would continue to go on and intelligent life would hopefully spring up again, this time maybe tyhey would be more apt to help each other then stab each other in the back for a buck.
