How do i advance in the story?

ALright i just started this game. And i did some quests but from my understanding there is an actual story to the game. Im currently in that elvaan city. So how do i start or continue to go through the main plot? Are there any special NPCs i should talk to?

There are gates next to the entrances/exits of the city. There a re gate guards there that will give you a mission that will increase your rank.

The "story" isn't like a real story like the original FF's.
Yeah this is an MMORPG... and as FF as it is... they can't have a simple start to finish story line otherwise people would quit when it got to the end hehe.
There are Missions for Rank, Quests for Fame, etc etc. I mean for example to advace to RANK 3 the last mission of rank 2 you have to kill a dragon... and their is a story behind that... but not in the way FF usually does it
