the guy has all day and many more to find the right dumbasses and can even remove entire parts of his interview. you could do this in any country, the media just feeds on stereotypes.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
As every other country in the world - including yours.
In general about 20% of the population are dumbasses. The problem with America is that 20% of 300,000,000 is still 60,000,000 thats a shit load of dumbasses. No wonder the media has such a field day. My question is, where the hell do you put them all? You cannot possibly have that many trailer parks....

. I say that as someone who was raised in Alabama where the most popular song in my high school at one point contained the lyrics "I don't know the difference between Iraq and Iran..."
In my schooling, which I think is typical of American schools, not a lot of emphasis is put on the world outside the United States. I think I had one year of world history in high school and that was it. Map tests? Forget about it, half the class failed those.
Most of what I know about international geography is from learning myself (some strategy games are surprisingly good with this) and paying attention to the news when I was younger.

Yup, the great teacher bush himself is teaching children all kinds of things. Just nothing good. lol
It's not that americans are stupid, there are stupid people anywhere you go. The problem with the US is the public education system which, for example, does not have a very big emphasis on geography and teaching about the outside world. Besides, being that this was not filmed live but is rather a compilation of various interviews, it's very easy to find a couple of idiots and make a 9 min video of their comments. You can do that in any country.

A high number, don't get me wrong, but we're no longer in the 70's -- is that something to record these days? I should amaze them and send my old Commodore 64 over, maybe with a black and white television. They are so uber smart they might be able to invent pong or something.

Why is it that 1/5 Americans can't point out the USA on a map of the world? Because rather than teaching history and geography, the American education system is centered around teaching children that the world outside of the USA is insignificant and indeed completely irrelevant, and as long as they know that no one but the good ol US of A "counts", they'll be fine. This is all well and good, however, because America doesn't need educated youth, they need youth that will go to Iraq and die for their country. The only explanation would be if they asked infants that chewed on the map instead of pointing. Just because someone asks the question doesn't mean that it is a TRUE question. I don't know about the US public school you went to in Canada, but in my experience there are plenty classes focused on the world outside the US. I had to memorize a world map in World Geography... in public school. English/Literature encouraged the reading of many authors abroad and from home. Different mathematics classes went into where the various formulas originated. In my high school there was a mock UN program for those students so inclined to learn what the purpose of that socialist organization is. Among many other classes and topics covered over the years that I'm not going to list here.
That's not to say there aren't problems with the system... dumbing down of standardized testing, eliminating cursive writing, allowing calculators, etc...

I think there is a critical difference.
In most countries stupid people are not allowed to speak. In America it is a constitutional right.
When we all subscribe to views like equal rights, all opinions start having equal status.
Or we get the David Beckham Effect, where a really pig shit stupid guy can give his opinion about anything under the sun in the media and because he is famous and well liked, everyone will listen. Even though the only thing he actually knows about is kicking a ball around.
America may have no higher a percentage of thicko's than anywhere else, (Although let me say educational standards are not great in the U.S. by first world standards), but unlike everywhere else, it gives them voice.
Al Gore says something stupid, he says it on internationally watched TV. He makes a movie and it is distributed worldwide. Stupid people from a America have a disproportionate amount of power compared to stupid people from other countries. Who is Slovenia's answer to AL Gore, you can bet they have one, the difference is the Slovenian one doesn't get exported.
If your American you can sing about how smart the Klu Klux Klan is or deny the holocaust, but in many other nations you just aren't allowed to. Government controlled TV stations simply don't make or buy films denying moon landings. There are so many countries out there in which stupidity is actively repressed. Censored even.
America through it's political system and cultural beliefs encourages stupidity and through the power of it's media distributes a greater proportion of that stupidity to the world than other nations.
And then the top man can't string sentences together live on international TV, and the stereotype just blossoms under the vast swathe of avialable material to draw upon.
By way of discalimer it should be noted that America produces a very high proportion of scientific, artistic and engineering achievements for the size of it's population. Military too. American centres of excellence are everybit as high achieving as anywhere in the world.
