Valve: We are using 94% of the 360, PS3 unknown

PSU: What is the primary advantage with the technologies for next-gen? Are there differences between the 360 and PS3 that you found aided you in the game?

Valve: We defintiely feel next-gen technology aided truly in our development process. You know---you have complexer AI, you have more characters to work with, an enhanced ability to work with the animations on a higher scale--all that stuff. The only difference between the 360 and PS3--which both as a collective helped us develop The Orange Box is definitely there. For the 360 version of the game, we can probably say we are using around 93-94% of the console's power given our current optimization. With the PS3, we can't exactly say what power cap we reached, since no developer really knows where the boundary is for the PS3. We can tell you that in terms of the whole game together on the PS3, we are not even using the SPU's and it is purely built on the graphics card and Cell. We're still optimizing for PS3 more because we can, which can explain the slight delay to you. But no worries, everything is going smoothly to put down any rumors.

Awesome quote. It's taken some time but the ps3 is really starting to come out of its shell.

The extrapolation from this would be that in the near future, developers will be reaching the cap of the 360's power while the ps3 still has more to give. That is, if developers aren't hitting the 360's wall already.

It takes a while to max out a console, and the PS3 seems to have a lot of potential, however it seems very unfriendly to design games for, kinda like the Sega Saturn, which did not turn out well. There seems to be an eerie similarity between the two, but hopefully the PS3 avoids the same fate as the Saturn.

Of course it can also be taken to mean that the PS3 is really really hard to optimize for and developers will say screw it instead.  Especially when paired with mediocre sales.

    Currently playing:
LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)

    Looking Foward too:
Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)

Translation: The PS3 is such a whacky platform to code for that we're not even sure how close we've gotten to its limitations. We don't understand the platform very well, and no one else does, either.

Wait, did a valve pr guy just say "complexer"?

If you can get over that, it sounds like they agree with what most say, the PS3 has more potential, but they haven't figured out how to use it yet.

The PS3 might end up like the 360 where because it's sold more 3rd parties create games to the 360 spec and not the PS3. So the PS3's full power is never fully used and is wasted apart from on 1st party titles, yeh that or the PS3 isn't hardly anymore powerful than the 360 and Sony lied lol.

Tbh i don't care cause it's all about the PC.
