The thing I didn't like about the game was the fact you stayed in one city and all the quests were instanced. There was one or two areas that were outside but it was still instanced for you and your party. But give it a try and see for yourself..you might like it.
Actually you don't stay in Stormreach anymore. There are several areas that are far away from the city. Some of my guild haven't actually been to Stormreach in a few months. There are also more than two wilderness areas now, they just added another one last month in fact.
I'm enjoying DDO myself. Quite frankly, I wasn't expecting to at all. It is very much a niche game, and keep in mind that while DDO does have a bit of solo content. D&D is a group-based RPG, therefore DDO is a group-based game as well. Getting in a good guild really makes the experience, though I'll admit I haven't had a poor PUG experience yet either.
In the end, again I'll just reiterate that DDO is a niche game. Just look how many negative comments the game has gotten from a lot of players. It's not like any other MMORPG and it's not an open world EQ/WoW/etc. fantasy game with D&D rules. If you are very "in the box" about how you want your MMOs to be then DDO probably won't be for you. If you're able to enjoy totally different experiences in different MMOs then maybe you'll enjoy it. All I'll recommend is trying the demo, that doesn't cost you anything other than download time and some space on your hard drive. Get some groups (there are tons of players now that the 12 servers merged to 5 in the US, it's great) and give it a shot.
I must say, I personally LOVE playing DDO. Other than World of Warcraft, I've never really had much fun in online gaming. A game is either fun or it feels like a grind, and this game in no way feels like a grind.
The graphics are beautiful, game play is fun, and now with the new server merges increasing population and all the new content, it's worth playing.
DDO is an amazing game and TOTALLY worth buying.. It is a million times different than most of the MMORPG market out there and Turbine pulled it off well IMHO... Get it!
DDO's failures are offset by its wonderful combat system for a lot of people. Unless the traditional MMO has everything you feel like you enjoy in a game I think you should give DDO a shot.
