Not sure if someone has mentioned this yet but if you dont mind space games I would recommend EVE Online. Its pretty much like real life because if you go solo you will see literally hundreds of players close by but not many chatting. However if you join a large guild then you will find in depth discussions and a huge variety of different players around the world. Some may say that all games are like that but I am 35 and have been playing EVE for 3.5 years and its because of the community. Recently played VG for 3 months but stopped because I ran around looking for people. EVE at low times is roughly 18000 and most times 25000-32000 players on one server. So even if you dont feel like talking to anyone you feel like you are in a huge dynamic community. Albeit some want to blow your ship away but stay in safe space and its cool. Plus the game has some slow times such as mining and its a good time to chat to other people then. Best thing about EVE is the communication system. Its highly advanced and none of this /talk ...... commands. you can have personal email, chat windows etc etc. Thing is you have to like space games though.
As far as fantasy goes I would recommend finding a well established guild. From experience the guilds that are largest and well established tend to have more mature players as trying to hold a lot of people together needs maturity and a lot of time.
I'd love to have a game that focused on community more, almost like what I've read about how SWG used to be. I'd like to see a huge sandbox type setting where people could design housing, stores, landscape, maybe even interactions with other players (dancing, etc..), but there'd also be a decent focus on combat so it wouldn't turn into something lame like Second Life. If City of Heroes was more like that, I'd still be playing because the community is already so great, I can imagine what they'd do if they had the tools to set up places to get together and chill.
Originally posted by Vendayn These mmorpgs had awesome communities when I played them/trialed them
1. Everquest 2 2. Saga of Ryzom (small population, but everyone was very nice and helpful) 3. City of Heroes Those are the three main ones that I found really good. my favorite community wise being Saga of Ryzom
I have to agree with these 3 choices.
EverQuest2 really grew on me and I ended up meeting a ton of interesting people. I'm on hiatus from there now, but plan on going back before the next expansion is released. There is a trial you can try out as well.
Saga of Ryzom has a very helpful, if small, community. And there are plenty of people there who love to give others a helping hand. They have a "trial" of sorts. Something like it's free to play til around lvl 25 or so. I forget. I should go back in that game because I found it rather interesting even as lowbie character.
City of Heroes is very social. I played until lvl 43 (lvl 50 is the cap) a whiles ago. There have been changes to the game that look interesting. If you do join the game try a server like Freedom or Virtue. I think Virtue is more for those who enjoy roleplaying, but that's not that off putting. ;P There is a free trial for Heroes and Villains.
Hope you find something you enjoy.
Good luck and happy hunting!

Or get 1 cat and a game. An older cat that loves to spend time on your lap. That way you'll be able to game, meet people, and also have the relaxing sensation of a purring cat on your lap.

Final Fantasy 11 will force you to socialize and getting into a good Linkshell (very close to a guild) isn't hard at all. Try it if your willing to donate a lot of time to it.
EVE, lol^^ The guys is asking for a fine community and you suggest him the most hostile one. "Community" is a bit more than the people in your "guild". Mmh, it is indeed easier to say, which game won´t fit into your needs. Avoid Free-to-Play-games, Schoolwars, Aion, Shadowbane, maybe WoW...
I wouldnt say the comunity is hostile, just stay away from the CAOD Forums (Corporation, Alliance and Organization Discussions) which is mostly full of chest beating "my alliance pwned your alliance" posts. But saying we are hostile is not fair .

My cat does nothing of the sort When she was little, she chased my mouse cursor while trampling over my keyboard. Now that she's older, she runs up and down in front of my face, bumps her head against my hands (while I'm trying to type or move or use my mouse) and tramples over my keyboard meanwhile.

Of course not everyone is hostile. You know, what I mean. I play it myself from time to time.
Yes, the community is important and it has notting to do with guilds. Because player community inside the game is only best when almost all players in hole server will be part of it. Todays mmorpgs communities are weak, because mmorpgs support too much for ability play solo and give too little purpose for community exists. Basicly communities are created when players have need for other players help in something and be togather. I'm not talking some forced grouping, but reasons where players find it's more benefit to do togather something, than trying to do it alone.
Guild is not same as community. Guild is small group of players, usually under 50, playing togather to they own reasons and own goals. Good mmorpg community happens when the players talk, create frienships and play togather beyon they guilds.

Lol. That makes me wish I still had a cat or two. I miss having them around. Mine never did that though. Although, they would try to take over my shoulders. Both of them at once. Does not make for easy typing or gaming.

Don't feel alone, Tom. Many of us older gamers are in the game mostly for the community, (I suppose that could be part of the popularity phenomena of Match.com and the like, hehe.) I know my husband and I, as well as my grown kids enjoy meeting and making friends from all over the world.
You might find Voyage Century Online to your liking, beautiful video quality graphics if your computer can handle it, and the community as a whole is older generation. I have many friends in VoC the age 45 and up, and surprisingly quite a few women pirates, too

MMORPG.COM has worst forum editor ever exists
I highly highly suggest the Old TImer's Guild.

Ever since joining them I have had just an awesome time in multiple MMO's. Great bunch of folks who know that life is more than just the game!
THe game you pick is not that important, the people you play with are!
