I've had this question ever since my first group in DDO and I have yet to figure out the answer.
If I solo a dungeon to explore or recoup xp debt, I break all the crates, etc. to pick up extra cash and potions or stuff to vendor. In groups everyone smashes crates like mad but leaves whatever drops. WTF? Far as I can tell the crate loot isn't auto-distributed at the end of the quest, so if we're not going to pick up whatever drops then why jump around like buffoons smashing all the crates?

When you smash a number of breakable objects, you get bonus exp. Stupid I know, but whatever.
Yeah there is different levels of stuff you break. Conquest or ransack is the highest, not certain. I think there is mischief and something else for lower. It's all something like that.
Click the XP button and it will tell you current status on how much you broke with crates and barrels. I think will be highlighted in green text.
I usually break everything and leave it on the ground unless I hear a potion drop. I can't remember if jewels make a certain sound.

Aha! Wow, I feel kinda foolish then. Guess I'll start joining in the crate-smashing fun haha. Thanks for answering, I don't think I'd ever even opened the xp frame before, that's pretty cool.
Ya I think the crate smashing is to simulate the searching of a room. Like in PnP, alot of people would thoroughly search each room they entered, looking in crates, under beds, etc. Since it would be annoying to open each crate individually, and hard to distinguish which crates have been searched, they just let us smash them. Besides, since you can't be evil alignment in DDO, its fun to go into a kobold's den and wreck their house.
