I'm just currious to hear someones first hand experiences, I'd like a mmorpg with a rp community that's there basically, I've tried Ryzom so there's no need to sugest that.
I dont mind PvP, I dont mind gankers, I dont mind grinding, well I dont mind just about anything as long as I can RP without people looking funny at me for it. Is there anywhere?
enlighten me

Normally my answer would be for you to check one of the younger games. As games get older the RP community becomes less openly active as more non-RPs begin to join the RP servers. However, with the lack of "big" new games out right now, you're probably going to have to settle with something that doesn't quite reach your expectations.
The only two games I know of that still have an active RP community, however weak it may be, are DAoC and WoW. You'd no doubt have to do a lot of searching, particularly with WoW, but I know for a fact that there are still a few good RP guilds out there. In the future, your best bet for a really active RP community will be either WAR or AoC, they both have a fantastic lore behind them and will no doubt have a very strong RP community shortly after launch.
Most role players are a part of a guild, so they can plan sessions and whatnot.
Just do a search for "rp guild" or "role playing guild" on google.
You could follow those terms with a game you're playing, like wow ("rp guild" wow).
You should be able to find somethin.
BTW - Role playing doesn't necessarily mean that you have to play a specific character. You 'role play' whenever you play a class, simply because that class usually has a specific role in combat and whatnot. Unfortunately, most MMO game mechanics are limited in comparison to tradition role playing, so you end up feeling like there's not much RP happening.
Lord of The Rings Online.......
I just started playing this a few days ago and I've seem a LOT of people roleplaying. People sitting in the tavern in groups playing their lutes and a small crowd huddled on the floor listening while carrying on conversations.....stuff like that. I've also heard quite a few people recruiting for their guilds (Kinships) with being a roleplayer as a requirement. I'm not much of a RP'er but it's seems to be pretty fun in LOTR. Very much fits the game...
Id have to agree on the lotr its a very RP / lore oriented game if you love the middle earth lore you will enjoy the game but the actualy play is a little sub par. If you havent tried world of warcraft you should and you can go to an RP realm theres 3 types of servers PvE where you have to flag to PvP then theres PvP where you dont flag its always go time and then RP there is also RP PVP.
It is very dated but a good game that has some rp is a 2d game called Nexus kingdom of the winds. There are player controled advanced classes and they really really took the RP serious. While I was applying to an advanced class I had to speak and act very much in character, Im not a big RP fan but I will admit was kinda neat to have to RP to get into the advanced class the game itself is cheap but really fun might consider checking it out.
OP, have you looked into SWG at all ? there's a couple rp servers and they have good class/faction choices to rp with and a new tool set (kinda like ryzom's ring) i haven't played swg in hmm.. maybe 6 or so months so i have no idea what state it's currently in.

thanks for the replies, i'll look a bit at swg and daoc ^^
I'm playing wow atm, but the rp/rppvp servers just make me sad. way to many people creating chars there just to take a piss at the rpers... I'm too in love with the middle earth lore to really enjoy lotro.. just didnt work for me (not that they did it badly or anything, it's just meh).
dont really want to join a rp guild as i generally like to work my way on my own when i can but i suppose it's worth looking into eventually..

You are forgetting The Chronicles of Spellborn which probably has a much better setting for RP then either of those games, plus it will be the first to be released.

The second busiest server of CoH/CoV has always been dedicated to RP. The server name is Virtue, I think you'll find what you are looking for there.

If you won't want to drop WoW, make a character on one of the newer RP-PvE servers and get into a good roleplaying guild. Moon Guard and Sisters of Elune are both good choices. There are still a few RP griefers, and a lot of players who "just don't get it," but there are plenty of RP events on both servers (my guild on Sisters of Elune holds a weekly RP event with another guild)
If you want the full-on RP experience with lots of players openly roleplaying, Everquest 2 has been my best experience. No RP griefers, very few dumbasses, and roleplaying is welcomed. There are only two roleplaying servers, and they don't have any special rules (they're only "RP-preferred"), but the quality of roleplaying is much better than you'll find in WoW.
If you really enjoyed Star Wars (movies) and want to roleplay in a very healthful community, I would strongly suggest Star Wars Galaxies on the Starsider server. Although I am new to the game, the community is very mature and many if not most roleplay. Most importantly, the community roleplays very well. It is almost the equivalent of parachuting into the Star Wars world.
I really enjoy the game. The EQ 2 server Antonia Bayle has some roleplaying as well but not on the level of SWG.
The Chronicles of Spellborn looks like it'll be quite sweet, looking forward to seenig how it ends up
SWG certanly looks interesting ^^ http://www.atriarch.com/worldofatriana/worldofatriana.html and I hope to see that finished, could be interesting

You won't find anything worthwhile in any MMORPG, nothing but a bunch of stupid drama and people wanting to cyber (since that's what RP means to most of them). Try this. http://www.nwn2haze.com/index.php
Bite me, Turbine.
get the game warcraft 3, with expansion the frozen throne.
go to custom games, and look for 'RP' games. THAT's where you'll true and real rping. It's like DnD, but everyones a dungeon master. (i've never played DnD before, so i think thats right)
dobrp, aomrp, erp, cotmrp, hrp, are names of the maps that are for rping.
?played: Nearly everything.
?waiting: *Darkfall*, Hero''s Journey
RP realms in WoW are a sad affair until you move away from the silliness in the lowbie areas. Once you get to level 20+ it gets better, and by high level you should have been able to make some good connections and meet mostly sensible people. Just never go back to Goldshire (or Barrens).
EVE-online has a lot of opportunity for roleplaying, there are many rp corps and alliances. Also the single server, persistant world game model allows the rp to have an actual effect on the underlying story arcs within the game.
Before the VG merge I had a lot of fun RPing on the Vanguard RP server. Even if people didn't play along, I made sure to stay in character and act as if they were in character too; eventually almost everyone gave in and joined me.
My advice is to find a server marked as "RP" and just start roleplaying there. It might take you some time to get your name out, but the friends you meet will remember and respect your preferences. Don't get into "why aren't you in character?!" fights, or rise to trollbait, and you should have a blast I know I did.
